Carter again cites racism as factor in Obama's treatment

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) - Former President Jimmy Carter reiterated Wednesday that he believes racism is an issue for President Obama in trying to lead the country.

"When a radical fringe element of demonstrators and others begin to attack the president of the United States as an animal or as a reincarnation of Adolf Hitler or when they wave signs in the air that said we should have buried Obama with Kennedy, those kinds of things are beyond the bounds," the Democrat who served from 1977-1981 told students at Emory University.

"I think people who are guilty of that kind of personal attack against Obama have been influenced to a major degree by a belief that he should not be president because he happens to be African American.

not all whites are racist, nor are all blacks – but what cannot be denied is that the republican party is racist.

There weren't many black faces at the GOP presidential convention and recent tax protests. The extreme conservative right reverse argument of black racism proves the point that the GOP has given up on attacting blacks and other minorities.

Carter is a racist. See? I can do that too. I don't have to justify it (like he doesn't). I can just say it. Carter, you're a racist. Maybe if I say it enough times it makes the accusation more credible. Carter is a racist, Carter is a racist. Hmmm ... no? Ok, so why are we even bothering covering Carters racial allegations when they aren't based on anything? Seriously, I wish the media would challenge him on that point. After all, as any kid would tell you, "It takes one to know one."

Agreed. I have no problem with those people that disagree with the President's policies, but many of these protesters are attacking him personally in the most vicious ways imaginable. I live in a conservative area of the South and the racist comments and jokes I hear on a daily basis make my stomach turn. Through 8 years of a Presidency that nearly destroyed America, I never heard anything as hateful towards Mr. Bush – yet the animosity against President Obama began even before he took office. Racism. Pure and simple.

I think Jimma is the racist in this picture. Some people see racism or some other prejudice in everything. That really indicates where their own prejudices lie.

I think Carter is right but he needs to shut up and go home. He is not going to shame leaders on either side into speaking against racism and there is racism and hate on both sides. By overshadowing what the president wants to do he and leaders are hurting their country for personal political gain.Gloenn Beck on Newsweek cover. Proud day for America????

Once again elitist leftists fail to acurately assess the non-coastal states. The majority live between California and New York but the leftists fail to recognize they don't think like the lefties in those two states. At some point the statists have to accept that this is fact. They can try to push their views on us from now until the cows come home but the facts won't change. It is shameful that they will now resort to calling this majority racist for believing as they do. It will backfire in their faces.

Are all Republican voters racists? Certainly not. But those who are seem very proud of the fact that they are. They posture, boast and hide behind terms like socialism, terrorist, communist; terms they barely actually understand. How is some poor white trash traler park slack jaw redneck going to understand the Russian Revolution? These are the unread cowards who are just angry that their day in the sun of a 1950s mentality in regards to race in America is over.

    Always remember:

If you disagree with Obama, you must be a racist
If you disagree with Pelosi, you must be a sexist
If you disagree with Obama's healthcare plan, you are a white elitist

If you disagree with Palin, you are thoughtful and smart
If you disagree with Cheney, you simply don't like those who torture
If you make any negative comment about any Democratic plan you are mean spirited

I think I have it right now...Obama is good...Obama is good...Obama is good. I feel better all ready.

I wonder if Jimmy Carter isn't trying to exorcise some of his own demons? His public actions and statements on racial issues have always been above reproach but just as he "lusted" in his heart perhaps there are other things in his heart too.

I am not the best fan of President Carter. I also voted against President Obama. But truth be told: Racism is playing a huge role against Obama. I am also surprised that the Republican Party (a party that is supposed to examplify leadership through law and order) is supporting Rep Joe Wilson's barbaric behavior. You mean no Republican Congressman voted to rebute Wilson? That is a big shame. I am considering changing parties. As at now, if elections are held today, I will vote Independent against my own Republican party!! President Carter has demonstrated true leadership, at last!!

President Carter speaks the truth. He should know. He's traveled the world, lived in the South. If anyone else has a better explanation as to why the low-lifes in this country are coming out with such hatred , let us all know. Notice that no-one is taking away anyones rights. Can't you just imagine someone carrying in an AK-47 to a Bush rally. I don't think so. Thank God, this is a small minority. To make a point, Fox News only incites these crazies. The top Fox News reporters have very little education. Just look it up. No college degress for Beck and Hannity. The illerate just listen and gobble all this crap up that Fox puts out.

Thank you President Carter for sticking to your guns in regards to the true agenda of SOME of those that are protesting the President's policies. There is a clear need for politicians in positionsof leadership from BOTH parties to stand up and call this racism to light, and unequivocably state that it is not acceptable. Their is also, IMHO, a sacred duty for all citizens of good conscience to speak up and drown out the evil voice of this loud minority of citizens. The world cannot see us in this light, and even worse, see as the rest of the citizenry stood idly by and never raised their voice against racism in America.
