Pelosi gets emotional about political climate

(CNN) - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who appears to rank only behind President Obama as a top target of health care reform opponents, grew visibly emotional Thursday when asked to compare the current political climate to that of years past.

"We are a free country and this balance between freedom and safety is one that we have to carefully balance," Pelosi said at a Capitol Hill press conference as she appeared to get emotional. "I have concerns about some of the language that is being used because I saw this myself in the late 70s in San Francisco.

"This kind of rhetoric was very frightening and it gave - it created a climate in which violence took place and so I wish that we would all, again, curb our enthusiasm in some of the statements that are made, understanding the ears that it is falling on are not as balanced as the person making the statement might assume," she added.

The California Democrat's image was a popular one among "Tea Party" protesters on Capitol Hill last weekend, used on signs with derogatory messages like "Congress, look what happens from too much pork."

Pelosi reiterated her commitment Thursday to a public option in the House version of the health care bill, a day after Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus unveiled a compromise bill that lacks the controversial provision.

"A public option will be in the bill that passes the House of Representatives," she said.

She ought to be out here with the people that are getting taken for a ride by all the right-wing fringe friends in the Insurance Companies.

Maybe more would get done - maybe Wilson would have been expelled from Congress.

I have never seen our country as it is today. I have never witnessed politicians stoop to the level they have. Never has there been so many lies, distortions, fear mongering and lack of regard of our elected for what is best for us and our country.
And it is so discouraging that people have let theirselves be so blindly led by big business,. How can they not realize they are being manipulated by greed and power?
How can anyone believe we do not need health care reform. The status quo is completely unacceptable. We can no longer allow big business, lobbyists, special interests and those who support them to continue to run, control our country and make crucial decisions on our behalf. We cannot accept politicians who put campaign funding, personal gains and interests over the welfare of the American people.
Wake up people. Stop the hate and start realizing what our country needs.

Pelosi's rhetoric is frightening to most Americans! Her far left agenda is scary to conservatives and moderates!! It is a shame she was not concerned about the rhetoric that was spewed against Bush! Civility disappeared with the Bush smear campaign led by the far left. Now the far right gives it back and she is scared. I think we need to eliminate the far left and far right in order to regain sanity in the US!

Then change YOUR language Speaker Pelosi. When it was President Bush, YOU were leading the charge with the same hateful and dangerous language and demonstrations against his Administration.

Now that Dem's have the presidency, it's "no more with questioning the political motives of the Administration or Congress" and if you do question then you're an angry mob. You can't have it both ways and for the record this type of language is BAD for our country.

Pelosi just does not get that the majority of Americans are opposed to the Public Option yet she is determined to ram it through. And she wonders why people hate her???

She is a part of the way things used to be done and not part of how it needs to be done. She may be sad as she is realizing that her party is changing right out from under her.

Pelosi is the one using hate-filled rhetoric. She has bogusly characterized Obama's opponents as racists and nazis. Give me a break, lady!

....and we think Pelosi is stable? She is the one that stoked the fires by saying the people that disagreed with her/their left wing positions were not American.

I would hope that the Tea Party Patriots, with their artificial manhood strapped to their hip, would consider that the promotion of violence does not serve any American cause.

Thes two people are most two do-nothings this world has ever produced. If Obama is going to be the first President black president he better do something quick or he definitely will be the last.

Nancy is making a very good point here, and probably the best I've seen in this political climate. She is undoubtedly referring to the time when San Francisco's Mayor George Moscone and gay-rights activist Harvey Milk were assasinated. It was a terrible, horrible time and she is right to warn against violent rhetoric.

She's such a disaster. Only the people in her liberal California district would reelect her. A shame that such a small group of people can play such a large role in our politcal future. Hopefully, they wise up and vote her out!

Here she goes again, disdaining many Americans by suggesting they are "imbalanced". Perhaps she needs to view videos of her own comments/remarks with respect to President Bush, Republicans, CIA agents, and the American public, as starters. A second thought, reference what happens to words falling on ears - apparently she cannot hear too well as the majority of Americans do not want a public option and she will continue to push for one in the House bill. Why does she continue to ignore whom she works for - the American people?

It appears that many feel that they must emulate the "In Your Face" style of certain commentators to the point of going to the extreme. Maybe it is because many feel they are becoming dienfranchised from the social – political environment and have lost their voice or are simply afraid. I listened to a so-called "debate" on health care last night which resolved nothing and accomplished nothing because of the shouting and apparent lack of substantiated data. Come on people, we can't continue in this manner lest we lose all respect for the rights and beliefs of each other. Speaker Pelosi is right!

  21. Pelosi IS the Best we have!!!

I agree wholeheartedly with Nancy!!! We need to shut down this dialouge because it is harmful for the direction that Nancy is trying lead us. Let's get behind Nancy, and shut down uncivil expressions of discontent. If we only outlawed free expression and made it criminal to oppose Nancy, her programs would get passed so much more easily. Then we would not have to suffer through this vetting process as the uneducated express their fears and display for all their selfish interest. Who cares if we have to pay more for less healthcare? Where is the sacrifice in the name of Reform. Doesn't anyone like C-H-A-N-G-E?

The politics of hate that has been launched by conservatives has become so overwrought that I feel incredible fear for our President and those elected officials who are trying to bring desperately needed change to this country. Hearing a so-called pastor pray for Obama's death, seeing people show up at town hall meetings sporting AK-47s, and the vicious – and yes, racist – anger of some of the Tea Party protesters is more than worrisome. It only takes one fanatic – fueled by Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin and echoed by self serving Republican politicians – for a disaster to take place. Please America – let's bring sanity back!

if her party would stop calling real americans who voice there opinion against her precious colleagues- RACIST, ASTRO TURF, NAZI'S, MOBS, UN-AMERICAN. then her little feelings would not be so hurt when these above mentioned rally against the "BIG GOVERNMENT" thinkers like herself and many other democrats..... Keep your name calling to yourself and stop belittling Americans who happen to disagree, which my recolection is within there right protected by the FIRST AMMENDMENT

Nancy Pelosi is a good person, but too weak for her critically important role, which is why she is such an easy target by the GOP. It would be a good thing is she stepped down and let a stronger player have the leadership role.
