Obama continues media blitz on Letterman

NEW YORK (CNN) - President Obama mixed policy discussion with personal reflections on his daughters and, yes, a few jokes in an appearance on CBS's "Late Show With David Letterman," taped Monday afternoon.

was the first time a sitting president has been a guest on the popular late-night entertainment show, according to the CBS Web site.

After taking the stage to a huge ovation, Obama teased Letterman about being surprised to see the event on his daily schedule, saying: "That's one of those where you ask your advisers, 'who's responsible for this?' "

Later, when talking about summer activities of daughters Malia, 11, and Sasha, 8, Obama said that they "goofed off," which he added was something he couldn't do. Letterman quickly quipped: "Well, you have," prompting a big laugh from both the audience and the president.

On topical issues, Obama promised to ask "tough questions" before deciding whether to send additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan, saying it was necessary to have a clear strategy in place before deploying resources.

"He drew a big laugh by pointing out he was black before he became president"

Maybe the liberal wingnuts who see racism around every corner will put a sock in it now. Opposition does not equal racism.

Paragraph 4 of the article above reads: "Later, when talking about summer activities of daughters Malia, 11, and Sasha, 8, Obama said that they "goofed off," which he added was something he couldn't do. Letterman quickly quipped: "WELL, YOU have," prompting a big laugh from both the audience and the president."

If you watch and listen to the video above, it is clear that the above is a misquote. It is easy to hear and see that the part in question, should read "Others have." The quote needs to be corrected.

He is afraid of showing up on FOX because he knows he will have to answer tough questions unlike the lame brained media. He went one time on FOX and was treated very well but he does not want to have to answer questions, just give his talking points.

Got to hand it to the people who voted for this guy, you folks elected a real narcissistic here. Obama is so in love with himself and the cameras, just too bad he didn't have the backbone to face FOX news on Sunday.

What Letterman said was, "Well, some have," referring to Bush.

In response to Obama's comment about not goofing off, Letterman says, "Others have," NOT "Well, you have," as this story reports. Please correct this error, CNN.

Thoroughly enjoyed the interview with the President and Letterman. The President in two days of interviews has once again shown what an intelligent, focussed and respectful politician looks like.

There are so many serious issues facing Americans today, like health care, Afghanistan and the economy; and this is how Obama spends his time. The campaigner in chief's campaign must end in 2012.

The comment from Letterman was not "Well, you have", but "others have".

Obama – Please get back to work. Haven't you figured out that the more you talk, the more people are against your healthcare disaster? Support continues to drop.....we don't want what you are selling.

It is so great to have a president who is articulate and has a sense of humor that does not include breaking wind like Bush did.

Actually, Letterman said, "Others have..." in response to the goofing off comment by Barack. CNN should check its reporting.

I listen to our President and I am filled with pride. This man has more than enough reasons to indulge in negativism, and fan the flames but he chooses not to. Over, and over, and over again Barack takes the high road. He makes us pause for a moment and ponder positive possibilities. He inspires us to reach, against all odds, for the best in us and others. Truly inspiring. God protect our President, we need him.

Good! President Obama needs to make his case to the American people. There are too many lies, misinformation and fear being spewed by the GOP. The truth needs to be told.

Again I say: 45, 000 Americans die each year from lack of healthcare.

IF.... 45,000 Americans were being killed each year by terrorists, the GOP would be out rioting in the streets.

But..... when 45, 000 Americans die from lack of healthcare, the GOP is silent!

Necessary to have a clear strategy in place before deploying resources!

Dont you wish Bush would have done that about Iraq? Instead of overreacting and invading with no Strategy and no exit plan. Just think of all the Lives and money that would have been saved But no Fear we have a calm rational Intelligent President now WHO ACTUALLY LISTENS!

I believe that this article misquotes Letterman in one joke. When President Obama mentions not "goofing off", I believe that Letterman's reply was "Others have" not the article's quoted reply "Well, you have".
