Franks aide clarifies 'enemy of humanity' comment

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="In a recent speech to conservative activists, Arizona Republican Rep. Trent Franks said President Obama was 'an enemy of humanity.'"]
WASHINGTON (CNN) - A spokeswoman for a Republican congressman who called President Obama "an enemy of humanity" said Tuesday that he should have clarified that he was talking about the president's policies on abortion.

Bethany Haley, a spokeswoman for Arizona Rep. Trent Franks, told CNN on Tuesday the congressman was actually referring to "unborn humanity" - a specific reference to the president's policies on abortion.

Franks used the term in a speech to conservative activists Saturday in St. Louis, pointing to Obama's decision to aid international family planning clinics that perform abortions.

"A president that has lost his way that badly, that has no ability to see the image of God in these little fellow human beings, if he can't do that right, then he has no place in any station of government and we need to realize that he is an enemy of humanity," Franks said.

Franks' speech was recorded by the liberal group People for the American Way.

In an interview with the Washington Independent after the speech, Franks also renewed a call for Obama to produce a copy of his birth certificate to end the questions by "birthers" who doubt the president's birthplace. Franks said he had once considered filing a lawsuit to get it, but did his own investigation and became convinced that the president was born in the United States.

Haley called the controversy a "silly debate" and said it is "ridiculous that the president doesn't just produce [the birth certificate] and make it go away." In the interview, Franks implied that the president might be trying to hide something else.

"Probably, Barack Obama could solve this problem and make the birthers, you know, back off, by simply showing us his long-form birth certificate," Franks said. "That'd solve the problem. There's some other issue, I don't know what it is, that he doesn't want people to see the birth certificate on."

I wonder if the Republican commenters here recognize utter desperation that their hyperbolic statements of apocalyptic doom convey to the rest of us?

For what its worth, I can't name one person who has died directly because of any bill, decree, or action that Obama has issued since taking office. I cannot name one civil liberty that has been taken away from me by Barack Obama. Hell, under the presidency of Barack Obama, I can even still legally buy a handgun in my homestate.

Well I could if not for a bunch of lunatics stockpiling munitions in anticipation of a ban of the 2nd Amendment.

By contrast, W. has the blood of 100's of 1000's from two wars declared, and the Patriot Act pretty much means that anyone, myself included, can be held indefinitely without a right to legal counsel in a military brig.

Who is the enemy of humanity here?

Typical radical republican. When they find out the public does not go along with their outrageous claims they back track. They say they were mis-quoted, the MSM got it wrong, that isn't what the meant. All they do is whine and moan. Does this country need this kind of trash. Heck no...kick em out next year. We need real men and women....even if they are republican lets get real Americans in office and not these pieces of crap.

The GOP representation among these entries is hardly helpful. I try every day to "love my enemies", as Jesus commanded. But it's obvious the GOP doesn't see things that way, too. Obama's trip to bolster the US case for the 2016 Olympics, should it be successful, would mean a geat deal of job creation for Chicago. Not only that, but the tourist dollars dropped in that city – and others across the country, I think – would bode well for the US economy.

Someday people will return to civility in this country. I only hope I live to see it.

No one, and I mean no one, is pro-abortion. But most feel the decision to have or not have one rests with the woman, not the government. That's just one area where the hypocrisy of the Republican party is infuriating. They claim to be pro-life, but do not want gun laws(not even for assault weapons that aren't meant for protection or hunting), and back war after war under the guise that America is supposed to be the watchdog of the world, which then unfairly and I believe illegally kills American grown-up babies. They call for smaller government, but want the government to have more power over our personal lives, including a woman's rights to control her own body. Personally, I don't care how big government is – so long as it is manageable and performs the services it should. And we can afford it.

Does the republican base really support these evil mealy mouthed elected politicians, or are they the real relics from an America never to be realized again? The 50s, 60, & 70s America is never to be again.

It very disconserting to think that any American elects these types to represent them on a national level. When it is local it remains internal and is reflected in the lack of diversity in the townships and they remain on the cusp of success. The first disaster to hit makes them a welfare case.

    Where are the REAL Republicans?

All the crap by Repubilicans is getting old. No way this was an accident! The guy should be sent home. No way should someone who can make such comments be representing our country.

The Republicans have really fallen down low lately, I hope they get beaten down even more in the next election so they see they cannot act this way.

Trent Franks is a moron. It must be the heat in AZ that fried that pea brain of his. His belief in an imaginary cloud being says it all and he probably thinks that there's an easter bunny and Santa Claus too.

I'm fed up with all the hateful things the extreme right are saying about President Obama followed by "Oh I didn't really mean that" or "I'm sorry" (wink, wink)

Wake up everyone we are a nation of socialized medicine for selected groups; including everyone in Congress. Our insurance companies already ration who they will cover and what procedure they'll pay for. They can refuse to cover life-saving operations or medicine, hoping the person dies before they have to pay a penny. They refuse to cover "pre-exiting" conditions and put a limit on how much a person can spend each year.

These crazy birthers crack me up. Rep. Franks says they will "back off" if only President Obama shows his "long-form" birth certificate. No, they won't.
These nuts are also demanding the president's school records back to kindergarten, baptismal records, the client list of the law firm that employed him in Chicago. For some reason known only to their tiny brains, they even want his undergraduate senior thesis. The only thing they haven't yet demanded is a DNA sample. But give them time and they'll want that too.
    They will never stop.

What type of christianity does Rep Franks belong to? I have been Catholic my entire life and have never seen such hatred and racially charges rhetoric in my life. Why don't the wing nuts listen to the Pope-who most graciously welcomed President Obama and his family to the Vatican while scolding the Notre Dame extremists and self righteous christians on the harshness of their treatment of our wonderful President. How do people like Rep Franks get elected? This is truly disturbing.
