Obama, Chicago come up short in Olympics bid

(CNN)–Michelle Obama gave an impassioned speech before the International Olympics Committee. President Obama traveled overseas - in the middle of debates over health care and Afghanistan - to make his personal pitch to bring the 2016 Olympics to his hometown.

But despite their efforts, the Obamas will come home empty-handed as Chicago's dreams of hosting the Games evaporated in the first round.

The news stunned those awaiting the announcement, many of whom thought the battle was between Chicago, Illinois, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rio also beat out Madrid, Spain, and Tokyo, Japan, to host the games.

    ...demonstrating against the man trying to clean up THEIR mess...

    ...America has been insane, and now the world knows and sees it...

    ...Dear God, please cleanse the earth of right wing, Obama-hating TRAITORS!!!!

    My gut tells me the bigger story is about the conversations he had on Board Air Force One...we'll see in a few days I'm sure.

    I hold no ill will towards him for going to the home of the Danes...he tired, he lost. There are lots more things left to accomplish and it was a distraction during some awful economic figures (thinking long term).. I wish Rio the best on this journey, perhaps this now means many homeless children will have a home before the Olympics come to town..now that is a plus to look forward too!

    The bid went to the right country. A Latin nation's time was due. Mexico was the last in 68.
    And, they were the only country that did not have a head of state there. This meant a lot in my eyes. The games are supposed to be free of politics and have no place for political intervention.
    Blair was wrong to do it and so waere the three leaders that showed up this year.

    FACT: All other heads of state were present today to make their countries' pitch;

    FACT: The games would have provided a huge boost for the economy (tens of thousands of direct jobs to the Midwest, billions in revenues for broadcasting/advertising/turism etc);

    FACT: Over 80% of the American public supported the US bid to host the Olympics in 2016.

    It's hard enough to understand why President Obama's detractors can't seem to appreciate his efforts on behalf of the US... but the manic chearing for his (that is, OUR) failed bid is downright repulsive.
