Grayson: Americans 'want to see a congressman with guts'

Rep. Alan Grayson's campaign is seeing an influx in campaign donations.

Rep. Alan Grayson's campaign is seeing an influx in campaign donations.

WASHINGTON (CNN)– Rep. Alan Grayson's re-election campaign is seeing an increase in donations since his House floor speech last week in which the freshman Florida Democrat said the Republican health care plan calls for sick people to "die quickly."

"The campaign has over half a million dollars in the bank and over 5,000 first-time contributors in the past three days," Grayson told CNN Saturday, saying he has his floor speech to thank for the influx of cash.

"People want to see a congressman with guts," Grayson said. "[And] America likes to hear the truth."

On Tuesday, Grayson called the Republican health care plan a "very simple plan."

"Don't get sick. That's what the Republicans have in mind," he said. "And if you get sick, America, the Republican health care plan is this: die quickly."

Grayson worked to clarify his remarks in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Wednesday.

"What I mean is they have got no plan," Grayson said. "It's been 24 hours since I said that. Where is the Republican plan? We're all waiting to see something that will take care of the pre-existing conditions, to take care of the 40 million Americans who have no coverage at all.

"That's what I meant when I said that the Republican plan is don't get sick. And if you do get sick, die quickly."

Republicans are working to use Grayson's outburst to their advantage too– starting the website disalangrayson.com where voters are asked to contribute to the "FL-08 Nominee Fund." The site says all contributions will go toward the Republican candidate who wins the primary challenge in Florida's 8th district.

According to Grayson press secretary Todd Jurkowski, who received the latest fundraising totals from senior campaign adviser Julie Tagen, of the over half-million dollars in the bank, more than $150,000 has come in since Grayson's pitch to Congress Tuesday night.

The Republicans can be downright mean and nasty sometimes and the Democrates have let them roll right over them. It's about time that a Democrate has finally found their voice and spoke the truth about the other 'evil' side.

I dunno - When I first heard this guy discussing a bunch of people wanting somebody to "die quickly," I thought he might have been talking about Penn State fans.

But, seriously, Alan Grayson is doing a great job and we need more like him to hold the Republicans' and the Blue Dog/Bush Dog Democrats' feet to the fire on health care, banking reform, and SO many other issues.

Pathetic is the word that comes to mind. I want reform with what this country was founded on – free market capitalism. This guy is a joke and thanks to the GOP led congress I have a great HSA plan which is a real type reform. Funny the Mass plan and from what I read the dems plan have no HSA choice. Look at all the government run agencies – poorly run and going bankrupt! Get a clue people and lets reform it right without government/pol screwing it all up.

He's on the money. I just downloaded and read the Republican health care bill H.R.3218........All 24 pages. It's a joke. No reform at all. Max tax credit is $2500 single or $5000 family. Insurance companies cannot refuse to insure you........doesn't say thet can't deny benefits for pre-existing conditions though. They say you can get into a "high risk pool".......doesn't say they won't limit benefits though. This thing must have been made up at a drinking bash. You can download it online, just do a search for H.R.3218.........Yep the GOP is right on top of things.........I need insurance.....I think I'm going to hurl.

The Republicans have an alternative, and have laid it out many times. The trouble is, the Dems and their cheerleaders in the MSM don't care. The Dems definition of bi-partisanship is Republicans come over to their side. The mindset is that anything different is a non starter.

This idiot was put up to this to try to gin up their base, but it won't work. Americans have figured out that the Dems healthcare proposals are a trainwreck waiting to happen and the only way now is to try to sneak it through somehow.

Obama's big mistake was to allow the ultra-partisan liberal leaders in Congress to write these bills instead of making his own detailed proposal in the beginning and then fighting for it. He obviously didn't have the guts.

Nov. 2010 can't come fast enough.

Representative Grayson would fit in very well in the Socialist utopia of Canada. Whenever Socialists in Canada are unable to defend their ideas with facts, they rely on name calling and mindless rhetoric. Whenever voices of dissent want to debate the merits / shortcomings of government run healthcare, the utopian left ignores the issues at hand and lowers the debate to that of name calling and conjecture.

I would like to step above the rhetoric.

Facts (From an outsider without a political agenda)

1.) Universal government provided health care is paid for by everyone who works!! My family earns less than $90K annually and we are in the top marginal tax bracket. (50+%) Believe me, in the Greater Toronto Area, this is not what one would consider rich. NEVER TRUST A POLITICIAN THAT SAYS, "We will only tax those that are most able to pay for healthcare." I can assure you, "Those most able to pay" is another way of saying, "Those that choose to work".

2.) Healthcare is rationed in Canada. Many people wait up to a year to see a specialist. Many people wait 6 or more months for an MRI. Many people do not have a family doctor.

3.) Elderly people / those that are sick are the least likely to receive timely medical treatment. Delaying and denying needed medical treatment is a tactic used to ensure that the best care is reserved for the young, able and taxpaying. Rationing of healthcare is not a something that is officially sanctioned policy – it is however the reality of having "x" amount of supply and "2X" amount of demand for services.

I have lived in Canada my whole life and have had the good fortune to have never needed to rely on my free government provided health care. My mother was not so fortunate. She died in 1983 – partially due to incompetent medical care and partially due to the fact that potentially life saving drugs and treatment were not provided by our socialist single payer healthcare system.

Representative Graydon, Republicans don't kill people, Socialism does.

While seeming funny this man has only further damaged very bad relations between the two parties and the two halves of the country that cannot seem to agree on anything. While liberals have control of everything it will not last; history has proven this. When the political pendulum is left it will swing back to the right and you liberals will cry over the lack of respect you get. If all the Dems have so much guts why haven't they passed anything? The numbers are there. They either lack the courage of their convictions or don't believe what they preach.
