Bachmann: House Dems 'embarrassed' by their health care bill

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/10/06/art.2bachmann.cnn.jpg caption="Rep. Michelle Bachmann said Tuesday that 90 days ought to be set aside to consider the final health care bill in the House."]
WASHINGTON (CNN) – Minnesota Republican Rep. Michelle Bachmann said congressional Democrats were not guaranteeing lawmakers enough time to read the final version of health care reform legislation before they vote, telling conservative bloggers Tuesday that the majority party might be more interested in giving President Obama a political victory than in passing an effective plan.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently pledged to post the final bill online for at least 72 hours before the House votes. But Bachmann said Pelosi's pledge is not enough.

"Three days is an embarrassment," Bachmann said Tuesday at the Heritage Foundation's weekly blogger lunch. "It shows how embarrassed these Democrats are of their bill. They know this health care bill is radioactive with the American public and if they give the American public more than three days to read this bill, all hell might break loose and they might never get this bill actually passed and done.

"It shows, again, that they have no confidence in their health care bill. They have no confidence in their leadership to be able to explain this bill."

Instead, the Minnesota Republican suggested that a minimum of three months is a more appropriate time to consider the final version of health care reform legislation in the House.

"This really needs to be about bettering the health care system, not giving 'a win' to the president, because health care shouldn't be about President Obama. It shouldn't be about him. It should be about us. It should be about the country," she said.

The version of the health care reform bill drafted by the Senate Finance Committee is currently online and an online campaign begun last month to encourage Members of Congress to read bills before voting on them has garnered more than 100,000 pledges, according to the campaign's Web site.

Bachmann is right. Pelosi, and Reid, are fighting like heck to keep any bill they produce from being put up on the web for all to see for at least a couple of days. Why is that? Only reason I can think of is that don't want anyone to see it, comment on it, analyze it, before they try to push it through.

There are approximately 50 to 200 words per page. That is, it really is about 200 pages of text spread out over 1000 pages. This is about a 4-5 hour read plus another 4-5 hours to think about parts, plus another 24 hours of research to understand what particular sentences actually mean.

I think 5 days is better than 72 hours.

What are we paying her salary for if she is incapable of doing the job? Minnesota deserves better than Michelle.

Michelle Bachmann: Another attractive, yet very creepy conservative that got elected on her looks alone.

When will the conservatives learn not to vote in people they think they can have a beer with, or wouldn't mind being seen with? Sheesh!

If this bill is so bad and in danger of backfiring on the Dems, the rethugs should be shouting from the rooftops encouraging the Dems to pass it. If it passes and turns out to be the dog crazy bachmann and her nutty cronies claim it is, it would mean sure victories for the rethugs in 2010/12. Why would she discourage that?

a question please......just WHAT really are the GOP faithful afraid of?

With such limited numbers that conspiracy theorists occupy a good portion of what's left of the Republican base, it's a wonder why any self-respecting person would identify themselves as such.

She should not receive any health care until she gets the bill read.

90 days??? Thats another three months, sounds like a stall tactic to me. What she should have done was to use the 90 days she spent trashing the bill this summer, to actually read the bill.

The embarassing thing about it is that the lobbyists have made sure that it involves a big payout to insurance companies and contains no real reform. Nice job, congress critters. Maybe we'll see actual reform when the entire system collapses in the next 20 years or so. Have a nice day!

Of course the "Health Reform" is really just political gamesmanship. What does anyone expect? Obama did not get the job because of his long list of accomplishments. He didn't get the job because of his novel solutions to all of America's problems. He didn't get the job because he did so well in the debates. He got the job because of political gamesmanship and that's what he does. His debates weren't against his opponent John McCain...they were against the previous administration. To understand what we got you need look no further than how he got there.

Well, why is this such a shock? She can't read so either she's got to find somebody to read it to her (maybe her kids) or she's just leraning to read herslef and she hopes she'll get it in 3 months. It just couldn't possibly be because she wants to DERAIL health care reform, could it?

I'm confused, is 72 hours too short a period of time for a republican to do a little reading?

Obama's health care plan sounds very familar to us Massachusetts residents. It's essentially what we already have here. Now if Obama could somehow make it so our system works better, it'd be a good thing. The thing I find funny about this is the Republicans accuse his plan of being too liberal. Funny thing is who proposed the Mass. health connector? It's a former Mass. governor that Republicans know all too well by now, his name was Mitt Romney. Talk about hippo-critical. lol

Why not make suggestions to make the bill better and offer something to the public rather than criticize?
I've always felt there was something good that came out of a two-party system. I'm not so sure now. all the politics that keeps things form getting done is way out of hand.

All of the Repubs, especially Bachman should havbe their healthcare taken away from them. Maybe then after they have filed bankruptcy after being unable to pay medical bills they will realized how insane they are for stalling healthcare reform. I hope they can never afford the "Brain Surgery" they are in need of.

If there are Congressmen/women who cannot read this bill in three days, they need to resign and go back to school. WE HAVE WAITED LONG ENOUGH.
