Bachmann: House Dems 'embarrassed' by their health care bill

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/10/06/art.2bachmann.cnn.jpg caption="Rep. Michelle Bachmann said Tuesday that 90 days ought to be set aside to consider the final health care bill in the House."]
WASHINGTON (CNN) – Minnesota Republican Rep. Michelle Bachmann said congressional Democrats were not guaranteeing lawmakers enough time to read the final version of health care reform legislation before they vote, telling conservative bloggers Tuesday that the majority party might be more interested in giving President Obama a political victory than in passing an effective plan.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently pledged to post the final bill online for at least 72 hours before the House votes. But Bachmann said Pelosi's pledge is not enough.

"Three days is an embarrassment," Bachmann said Tuesday at the Heritage Foundation's weekly blogger lunch. "It shows how embarrassed these Democrats are of their bill. They know this health care bill is radioactive with the American public and if they give the American public more than three days to read this bill, all hell might break loose and they might never get this bill actually passed and done.

"It shows, again, that they have no confidence in their health care bill. They have no confidence in their leadership to be able to explain this bill."

Instead, the Minnesota Republican suggested that a minimum of three months is a more appropriate time to consider the final version of health care reform legislation in the House.

"This really needs to be about bettering the health care system, not giving 'a win' to the president, because health care shouldn't be about President Obama. It shouldn't be about him. It should be about us. It should be about the country," she said.

The version of the health care reform bill drafted by the Senate Finance Committee is currently online and an online campaign begun last month to encourage Members of Congress to read bills before voting on them has garnered more than 100,000 pledges, according to the campaign's Web site.

It turns out that in eight states, plus the District of Columbia, getting beaten up by your spouse is a pre-existing condition.
Under the cold logic of the insurance industry, it makes perfect sense: If you are in a marriage with someone who has beaten you in the past, you're more likely to get beaten again than the average person and are therefore more expensive to insure.
In human terms, it's a second punishment for a victim of domestic violence.
In 2006, Democrats tried to end the practice. An amendment introduced by Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), now a member of leadership, split the Health Education Labor & Pensions Committee 10-10. The tie meant that the measure failed.
All ten no votes were Republicans, including Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyoming), a member of the "Gang of Six" on the Finance Committee who are hashing out a bipartisan bill.

Why bother, she can't read nor comprehend simple statements? It would take her a year to get through the table of contents.

All rational Dems and Repubs are embarrassed by all the outright stupid things this un-professional Congress member blurts out at any moment. She has become and continues to be the joke that just keeps on giving for the Democratic Party. Of course the hate radio, Fox media / tea-bagger mob will claim it's the ficticiuos "liberal" media's fault.
The Dems may be afraid the Repubs will reign her in, but I doubt anybody can help her, except for increasing her meds maybe?

You who are bashing Bachman are shooting the messenger. She in your mind may be wacko but her point is right on. This is important stuff. Once enacted as law it is difficlut to change.. I for one want the bill read and understood before my representatives vote on it. Let me ask you....do you sign contracts without first reading them. Same here. Get a grip

Ok, post for 3 days, then vote and pass the bill. We've been waiting....

  11. I can see Canada from my house!

She has had months to access the plans that circulated through Congress, and she complains that she is being given a deadline? Where has she been, except out demonizing any plan that does not give more back to the private insureres than they already get? She should know what is in the bills IF SHE BOTHERED TO TAKE THE TIME TO REALLY STUDY THEM!!!

The arrogance of Bachman and the other do-nothing members of the GOP astonishes me. They are doing everything to destroy this country so they can just score cheap political points. They truly do not care. Its amazing.

  12. Actually...

They are embarrassed by YOU, Rep. Bachmann, and you aren't even a member of their party. They're just embarrassed that they have to be sitting in the same chamber as you and listen to your drivel.

Michelle Bachmann is the greatest disappointment that has ever been elected to office. The stupidity that spews from her mouth is uncomprehensible. She is everything that is wrong with our government.

More then three days is ok to ask for. But three months is absolutely PATHETIC to request. It should only take FIVE at the most, that way you could spend two days working from home, like most republicans (aka Sarah).

One week is MORE then enough. Asking for three months is a BLATANT and SORRY excuse, which is no more then a STALL and AVOID tactic. Republicans will continue to kill 45k people a year, no matter how long they are given to read the bill. So give them a week and move on, with or with out them. They have had their chance!

Michelle Bachmann is the smartest woman in congress and the second smartest woman in politics!!! The public option is radioactive with the American people because they know it will hurt insurance company profits because people will like it better than their private insurance!!! Nonprofit collectives will help private insurance companies because they'll take the really sick people and poor people!!! Write your congressman and senator to vote NO SOCIALISM!!! NO PUBLIC OPTION!!!!

Can't we Republicans find a more credible spokesperson than this nut job woman???

Whatever she says gets lost in her repeated outlandish claims/statements. She's a major liability and one of the reasons that the Republican party continues its downward trend amongst swing voters.

Will we ever get the message??????????

If Michele Bachmann can't read a ONE piece of legislation in three (3) days, she does not need to be in Congress.

Bachmann recently showed that she doesn't read legislation she has already decided she's against: standing on the House Floor, she declared that a provision in the House health care bill which requires that children's medical privacy be protected by public schools, means that even parents would have no right to know about any treatment their child received during school hours. (See youtube.com for the video of her floor speech).

She is an anti-public education, narrow-minded fundamentalist, right-wing fanatic who's hell-bent on denying health insurance to Americans who aren't fortunate to be as wealthy as she is. So much for her "Christian" values.

Democratic leadership is so weak they control both houses and can't get it done. And if you think Pelosi would give anyone 72 hours to read the bill your dreaming. The only thing she is truthful about is she wants the biggest gas gusling plane possible to ferry her back & forth to SF every other weekend.

This woman Bachman is "Certifiably Insane",it's impossible to take her seriously.

In the mean time, what EXACTLY is the Republican plan ? NOBODY know because IT DOESN'T EXIST !!! When you're on the payroll from the insurance companies, you do their bidding obviously. What is Bachmans idea to remedy this problem of healthcare ? NONE, NADA, ZIP, NOTHING !!!

Bachman is an embarrasement to the Republicans. She's great for Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

Michelle Bachmann is out of her mind and does not deserve to be working for the government. This woman is dangerously unstable and is not fit to be in any position of power. Please lock her up in a mental institution before she does any real damage. Anyone who actually supports this woman belongs in the mental house too.
