White House: Fox is 'opinion journalism masquerading as news'

(CNN) - The Obama White House is ramping up its offensive against Fox News.

This summer, President Obama signaled his unhappiness with the network. "We've got one television station entirely devoted to attacking my administration."

Over the past month, that discontent has translated into an all-out war against Fox. Last month, Obama notably skipped a sitdown with Fox as he plugged his health care bill in one-on-one interviews on every other major news network. Earlier this month, the White House published a rare blog post directly attacking a news organization, slamming Fox for its "disregard for the facts" and pointing readers to an independent fact-checking organization that had debunked "more Fox lies."

Now, White House Communications Director Anita Dunn is questioning whether Fox is in the news business at all. "It's opinion journalism masquerading as news," she told Time of the news network, in an interview released Thursday. Dunn also made it clear this won't be the last White House blast aimed at the network: "They are boosting their audience. But that doesn't mean we are going to sit back."

FOX has more and More drifted away from being a news station to become totally "show" after "show" just a series of opinionated personalities. When they hired that wacko Glen Beck who is clearly certifiably insane to put up his political freak show they lost all credibility with the public. They are more of a flim flam infomercial or rather mis-infomercial. If you like fairy tales keep watching them. Obama is absolutely right about them. Mark Republican in PA.

It is so true. The WH needs to speak out against fox's misrepresenting the facts but do so in such a way to not give Fox news ammunition to make them look like the victim here.

I do not watch FOX news because they do not report the news but opine about it to fit their super conservative ideologies.

Freedom of the press does not mean misrepresenting the true facts any more then a person having the right to yell "fire" in a crowded place when no fire is there.

    It's about time!

Boy do I miss when we had real, objective news with real journalists like Cronkite and Jennings.

If Obama is so concerned about biased news then he should also look into the liberal media that unquestionably supports him, rather than just focusing on his opponents.

It is good to have a media outlet that isn't in bed with the Obama administration since NBC, ABC, CBS, MSNBC, and CNN are such cheerleaders the Obama administration. Atleast Fox has a few people (Juan Williams, Ellis Hennigan, Alan Colmes, Bob Bechtel, and a few others that are not right leaning. The above mentioned outlets are hard core leftists that don't even try to hide the fact that they are true liberals. What is wrong with free speech Barack when it is against your socialist agenda??

Fox does attack....They did it to President Clinton , now they're doing it to Obama. Every little thing Obama does they tear it down and scrutinize . They remind me of the national enquiror......They spin a story the way they want it. They also try to stir up more anger and hate from their right wing extremist followers.

    What a joke.
ABC, NBC, CBS, and CNN are not "opinion journalism? They just happen to be sold out to Obama and praise his every move.
Journalism of to day is interested in anything or anyone that has a buck or can make a buck for them.
If any group is more motivated by money it would be the US Congress.
It is a toss-up which is on the take more. Can not believe or trust either of them.

Keep on blasting Fox!! You bet!! The entire FOX network, and ALL of the news casters have the same "attitude"!! I wonder if they had to sign a CODE OF UNETHICS to be employed with Fox?????? I truly am disappointed in everyone of them, and especially Greta VanSustran, who originally began her broadcasting career during the OJ Simpson trial in the '90's. She is a lawyer turned broadcaster, which, by the way, seems to be the thing to do these days, as more and more lawyers are joining the cable TV news ranks! As an American citizen, I truly wish, someone or something would bring down FOX and take it off the air!!!

This is not news to most people. Fox has a decided slant on thing which is noticable in the words that they use and what they chose to air. Look at their personalities that have shows. Both Beck and Hannity are decidedly far right conservatives (almost to the point of being reactionary on the political spectrum). O'Reilly is the closest thing to a moderate on the network; he just has so much pent-up anger that it just makes him look more consservative than he really is.

UNBELIEVABLE......TALK ABOUT DISSASSOCIATING WITH THE PUBLIC WHOM YOU ARE PRESIDENT OF. Mr. President, when you took the oath of office you assumed a responsiblity to answer all CITIZENS of this country, not just the ones that agree with you. This is CHANGE, not trying to hide your discontent of those who disagree. I guess that is why FOX is leading in all ratings.....How dumb can this adminstration be to ignore that fact.

Fox News is the best there is on television. At least they show the other side of the story. The shows I watch on Fox have opposing views not like Chris Matthews who only has the far left on each Sunday. The round table on Meet the Press doesn't have many conservatives either. And don't say they are phony liberals on Fox–they have Barney Frank, Dr. Lamont Hill, and many others. How many major news channels covered the Acorn tapes? Stop drinking the koolaid and watch Fox News instead of reading what the WH and liberals say.

Finally a White House who sees it how it is. Fox News has gotten a blank check from washington for eight years, now it's time someone finally puts them in check.

As a self-identified liberal, I do like to take a look at what "the other side" is saying so that I can try to curb my bias. Fox News is definitely opinion journalism. Fair and balanced? Am I supposed to be laughing?

    "An independent fact-checking organization" ??????

BULL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No such thing !

Just because the major networks are in bed with the obama administration, doesn't mean everyone has to go along for the ride .
Looks like the White House is hiding from the truth. The "facts" from the white house are their propaganda and spin that isn't being swallowed by the majority of fair-minded individuals .

"Over the past month, that discontent has translated into an all-out war against Fox"

Seriously? "all-out war"? CNN sounds like "The National Inquirer". If the Obama administration had declared an "all-out war", they would have taken my suggestions... called for an FCC investigation on the bald faced lies they tell and question the incitement to violence by Beck, O'REALLY and Hannity.

It's about time someone came out openly and slammed those slimebags !!!

Sometimes when I go to the Y and they have the news on I have no choice but to suffer through FOX News. Last week they were asking viewers to email in links to questionable or biased news....takes some nerve, when 99% of bias news comes out of their newscasts !!

Interesting....Fox has the highest ratings of any news station in the country, and the white house feels they should attack it? And CNN feels they should cover it? Sounds to me like a few liberals are scared!!

They shouldn't call it Fox News. They should call it Fox Views. The slogan of "We report, You Decide" should be changed to "We make up facts to reflect our views, because you are too stupid to decide".

I'm glad the White House is finally speaking out about FOX "news." They disgrace what journalism is supssoed to be and they abuse Free speech as an excuse to be socially unacceptable, not to mention brainwash half of America.

Fox news understands very well that their listening audience is either blind to the obvious or deaf to good common sense and they stir it up good. They offer nothing but chaos and madness to the debate without any regard to the consequences.
Remember Roy Cohn and Joseph McCarthy ? Same nonsense , and just as dangerous !
Go get 'em White House !
