Gibbs hits back at Cheney

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/10/22/art.gibbs.cnn.jpg caption="White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs fired back Thursday at the latest criticism from Dick Cheney."](CNN) - White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs fired back Thursday at the latest criticisms from Dick Cheney, and suggested the Bush administration did not send U.S. troops into foreign conflicts responsibly.

"What Vice President Cheney calls 'dithering,' President Obama calls his solemn responsibility to the men and women in uniform and to the American public," Gibbs said. "I think we've all seen what happens when someone doesn't take that responsibility seriously."

Gibbs' comments come a day after the former vice president issued a blistering a wide-ranging critique of the Obama administration's foreign policy, saying Obama appears "afraid to make a decision" when it comes to troop levels in Afghanistan, and the president's indecision is "hurt[ing] our allies and emboldening our adversaries."

In his comments Thursday, Gibbs said the delay over a troop decision in Afghanistan is largely due to the fact the Bush administration did not adequately assess the conditions in the country ahead of sending troops there.

"I think it is a curious comment," Gibbs also said, "I think it is pretty safe to say that the vice president was for seven years not focused on Afghanistan. Even more curious given the fact that an increase in troops sat on desks in this White House including the vice president's for more than eight months - a resource request filled by President Obama in March."

"I find it interesting that he's blaming us for something that he didn't see fit to do over, best I can tell, seven years of a war in Afghanistan," he added.

Wonder when Cheney is going to realize we don't care what he thinks? Can't he just shut up and go away? He just digs himself in deeper and deeper. Way to go Gibbs.

Cheney is completely delusional. The rantings of a draft-dodging war crimial and war profiteer. His daughter is a sad case, too.

Cheney gets a national security award from a conservative group? This means nothing. It's simply an "Atta Boy" from like-minded nut-job republicans. Cretins who are happy with where the last eight years got us. Too funny !!

The Bush Administration ran the country into the dirt, while making a complete mess of Iraq and Afghanistan, and Cheney has the temerity to complain that Obama is ruining their legacy?

    LOL !!!

    Like I said . . . DELUSIONAL.

I'm not a huge fan of Obama, but bush/cheney are two of the most heinous traitors this nationa has produced. An unnecessary war is the ultimate immorality, the ultimate squandering of lives and financial resources, and just plain stupid. Had either cheney or bush even a sliver of integrity or decency, they would have by now ended their miserable and evil lives. At the very least, they should shut up and die quietly. It's tragic that they have not been brought to justice for their massive crimes.

The President, Gibbs, anyone in the Obama Administration and any educated global minded person for that matter need not take any heed to what Cheney is saying. No amount of spin will ever change the fact that the Republican 'values' that produced the Bush Administration proved to be utter failures and will be felt for generations. Cheney is yesterday's news. He was once arguably the most powerful man in the world – now he is just an old decrepit broken fool floating away on an iceberg, trying his best not to lose grip of the shoreline.

You tell him! I am so tired of this old war mongering fool talking about the Commander in Chief in this manner and second guessing his decisions – if anyone had spoken this way against Mr. Bush or Mr Cheney, that administration would have been quick to call them "traitors". Thank heavens we now have a President who thinks before he acts and gets the best advice available.

Tell the military what the objective is and then let them tell the administration what they need to accomplish it then sit back and let them do what they are trained to do. The problem with Vietnam, Iraq, and Afhanistan is the same: The Administration, which does not have the training and abilities, is trying to tell those that do have the necessary training, experience, and skills, what to do and what it will take to get it accomplished. I was in Vietnam. I saw it first-hand.

VP Cheney remember this – you can still be charged with war crimes for what you and the rest of the PNAC Cabal did, Obama can't!

By the way, Mr. VP, did the dividend check from Halliburton clear yet for "services rendered?" And believe me, sir, we all know you got one!

Dick Cheney is a dispicable individual, a criminal with the blood of young American soldiers on his hands. When is a tribunal going to convict this evil man?

Cheney is such a fool. He criticizes Obama because he sees that he is doing a much better job than the Bush adminstration. First of all, Obama is actually taking the time to assess what is really going to work instead of just plowing ahead because your machismo tells you it is the manly thing to do. Secondly, Cheney doesn't even address the fraudulent elections in Afghanistan! That GREATLY impacts what we do there, and how we do it. It would be foolish to make a decision before Karzi announced that he would support a run off.

Dick Cheney looks like a "dirty" old man who would not be afraid to commandeer anything to prove that he is right. He looks and sounds so grumpy! What a looser! Does not he get it?

This would be funny if it weren't for the fact that republicans blinded by hatred and partisanship actually believe it to be true. Cheney also stated that "the Obama administration had damaged America's relationship with key allies." Is he kidding? Cheney and Bush alienated the United States from most of the world and made a bad situation with the Muslim world even worse.

Dick Cheney has a lot of room to talk, he did not mind taking 5 deferments to keep from going to Vietnam. He only likes sending someone else off to war. Not his kids or himself just other peoples loved ones.
    What a slim ball!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Perfect response.

Add to that the Generals attacking Cheney now for the last administration's under-resourcing and abandonment of Afghanistan, and you have a recipe for one Dick withering in the wind.

  25. Beyond Absurd

Dick Cheney's irresponsible remarks are hurting America and emboldening its enemies and puts our men and women overseas at additional risk, all for his ego and political goals. As for the Bush/Cheney legacy of national security the facts are: 9/11 on their watch; 1.1 TRILLION dollars to be spent though fiscal year 2010 on Iraq and Afghanistan, 4,351 American lives lost in Iraq and 30,000 wounded, 883 American killed in Afghanistan and an estimated 300,000 American men and women returning from the combat zone with post traumatic stress syndrome (the cost in $ and human misery which is immeasurable).
Haven't you done enough damage to this country Mr. Cheney?
