Biden stumps for Owens, takes dig at Palin

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="Biden stumped for Owens Monday."]

(CNN) - Vice President Joe Biden challenged Republican voters in New York's 23rd congressional district to teach conservative "absolutists" a lesson in the special House election Tuesday by voting for the Democratic candidate in the race.

"We aren't asking you to switch your party," Biden said at a rally for Democrat Bill Owens in Watertown, New York Monday morning. "We are just saying join us in teaching a lesson to those absolutists who say no dissent is permitted within your own party."

The comments come a day after Republican Dede Scozzafava, who withdrew from the race Saturday amid heavy pressure from conservatives - endorsed Owens. Many high-profile Republicans, including Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, and Dick Armey, have already thrown their own support behind third-party conservative candidate Doug Hoffman.

In his remarks at the rally for Owens, Biden elicited boos from the crowd when he mentioned Palin, Limbaugh and Armey.

"The idea that Rush Limbaugh would handpick [the] successor is kind of unusual," Biden said of the popular conservative radio host who has heavily backed Hoffman over the national party's choice of Scozzafava.

"I would have thought the last person I would bring up to the North Country is Dick Armey," Biden continued, pointing to the former Texas congressman and current chairman of the conservative group FreedomWorks. "He's a decent guy, but he represents a view so alien it seems to me to the pragmatism to the North Country. Sarah Palin, a former governor - her views are real and consistent with Armey's and Limbaugh's and Dick Cheney's."

"This is a different ideology," Biden continued. "This is different than anything I've known in my 45 years of being familiar with this district. You know, they may not have any room for moderate views in the Republican Party upstate anymore, but let me assure you, we have room, we have room."

Later in his remarks, the vice president couldn't help but return to the subject of the former Alaska governor when the issue of energy came up.

"Sarah Palin thinks the answer to energy is 'Drill, baby, drill,' he said, leaning into the microphone. "It's a lot more complicated, Sarah, than drill baby drill."

A just-released Siena College poll suggests Hoffman holds a 5-point lead over Owens, while 18 percent of likely remain undecided.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin fired back at Biden Monday. "As the vice president knows, I have always advocated an all-of-the-above approach to American energy independence," Palin wrote in a note on her Facebook page. "There's one way to tell Vice President Biden that we're tired of folks in Washington distorting our message and hampering our nation's progress: Hoffman, Baby, Hoffman!."

..."We are just saying join us in teaching a lesson to those absolutists who say no dissent is permitted within your own party."–Joe Biden. 11/2/09.

REALLY? This is the party that dropped Joe Libermann, former candidate for VP in 2000, a few years later because he did not tow the anti-war rope. The party who embraces the idea of calling blacks who are Conservative "Uncle Tom." No dissent in the Republican party? Really? This is the party that many in the media have stated is not unified, in disharmony, no real ideas. Are those divisions NOT dissent in within the party.

  5. Obama/Biden = One and Done, please God....

Don't you just love how Joe the buffoon twists words and incites the sheep with his misinformation.....?

Let's face it....What really upsets the Dims and extreme left is that people like Limbaugh, Beck and Hannity, far from inciting hatred, have merely exposed the hypocrisy, lies and double-standards of the left. These talk show personalities have pulled up the rock under which the radical left has been hiding and forced them to crawl out into the sunshine, where they do not like the exposure, as everyone can see their true agenda. That is why they are waging war on media entertainers and trying to label them as 'extremists.' The only extremists I have seen are those currently in the White House. Keep following blindly, Obama sheep.

Yeah, let the delusional republicans think Teabaggers are in mainstream america and put a extreme right wing like a Hoffman or Palin to run against President Obama 2012..THEY WILL GET CRUSHED!! This country will not be hijacked by right wing nuts who think they can threaten and or purge moderates from their party. They can't win elections in the near future with just white senior citizens. They are dying off , meanwhile hispanics, african americans, asians, gays, women, independents, moderates are running to President Obama in droves and will be the determining factor in future elections. The more the republican party purges moderates, the smaller they become and irrevelant they become

The message I have received from the Democratics is they spent well over 700 BILLION dollars to create or save 650 thousand jobs. The media thought this was good. Next they spent millons on cash for clunkers to sell a little over 500,000 cars that put that many people in debt., and still shut down the american car makers as we know them after throwing billions of dollars at them. Last that we have a president that will not take NO as an answer from the american people. Sad truly sad.

Please let Joe Biden campaign for as many Democrats as possible over the next year. He'll guarantee that the Dems lose the House. What a blithering idiot.

  12. Proud Member..Party of No

The democrats are desperately trying to salvage an election or two tomorrow. They know that these election results are a direct indication of what the people think about Obama's job performance. They also know that they don't have the corrupt ACORN to help them steal any close elections this time.

Joe, you should be more conservative with your brain power.
Representation is more important to people than your "party" politics. It's about who will do the best job.

It's time the American people had a choice other than the lessor of two evils !

What's Biden going to teach us?

How to triple the debt in 100 days or less?

How to confiscate 6% of the nations GDP by socializing medicine?

How to hang our troops out to dry while general Biden comes up with his plan in Afghanistan?

How Fannie and Freddie and ACORN are great for the housing market?

    How to campaign 24/7?

How hair plugs changed his life?

That's right Joe. Conservatives don't need some big party apparatus to win. In fact, they're bettor off just standing on their own principles and not worrying about party bosses.

The country is a little bit conservative in general. When the Democrats start talking about big government healthcare reform, big deficit spending and new taxes then suddenly the overwhelming majority of the country gets nervous and starts looking for conservative candidates. President Obama got elected with a mandate for change but not for socialism, more government or more taxes. He should keep to the middle of the spectrum and stop Pelosi and Reid from trying to push us too far left.

Conservatives are 'absolutists' who are out of touch with the American people? Since when has standing for constitutional values that our Founding Fathers fought for 'absolutism'??? Does Biden think our founding fathers were loons too because they believed in limited government?

This reminds me of how the Republicans think. Imagine Richard Cheney can't recall 72 times what he said or did not say about the Valarie scandal.

Republicans seems to think they know everything and only the "Old Boys" should carry the party. They have made a fool of themselves appointing their first black RNC leader. Funny though, that leader takes his assignments from Rush.

Most people have a very short memory span and they have forgotten the main reasons why the economy crashed. May I remind you that your previous President and VP spent over a trillion dollars in Iraq. Remember also the bags of cash falling off the pickup trucks around Bagdad.

It seems that after loosaing more than 4,000 men and women and 40,000 mained; the oil you went for is not in the hands of the Chinese at the expence of Americans (you know what)

Can't wait for another eight years of waste and it was in Iraq.

Whah! Whah! Whah! Dede has done the country a service by showing that every "moderate" Republican will align themselves with the left by supporting Owens instead of Hoffman. VP Biden, with all due respect, you lead the charge to throw Joe Lieberman out by thinking for himself on one issue. You say Conservatives are "absolutists" by having firm principals that the electrorate can either vote for or vote against. When was that a bad thing? Squishly politicos, especially on the GOP side, got us here – lets rumble tomorrow, in 2010, and beyond for the sake of the country.

If the downfall of the GOP is conservatism and "the base", why do you care? If your enemy is destroying himself, get out of the way.. Go ahead libs, keep telling yourself conservatism is dead. Keep thinking that you're set for a decade of rule. "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall"
