Obama orders flags lowered to honor Fort Hood victims

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="President Obama said Friday that flags at the White House and other federal buildings will be flown at half staff until Veterans Day in recognition of the shooting at Fort Hood, Texas."]Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama said Friday that flags at the White House and other federal buildings will be flown at half staff until Veterans Day in recognition of the shooting at Fort Hood, Texas.

"This is a modest tribute to those who lost their lives even as many were preparing to risk their lives for their country," he said at the White House.

"It's also a recognition of the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect our safety and uphold our values."

Obama said he met Friday morning with FBI Director Robert Mueller and other federal agency heads to discuss the ongoing investigation into the massacre.

"We don't know all of the answers yet, and I would caution against jumping to conclusions until we have all of the facts," he said.

The alleged shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a psychiatrist who worked in a hospital at Fort Hood, is blamed for the deaths of 12 soldiers and one civilian, military officials said.

Another 30 people were wounded; 28 of them required hospitalization.

I'm glad you Democrats are leading in the hatred poll, because after 2010 and 2012, you won't be leading anything!

Dear Bhagdad Bob (aka GOP wingnuts), denial is not a river in Africa. Come back when your party affiliations exceed 21%.

Why wasn't they lowered yesterday. I'll tell you because Obama does not care. He wants the military destroyed in any manner the muslims can do it. Why else does it take two months to decide to support the war are get the hades out. Someone stated he needs to quit listening to his Generals and make a decision with his staff. LORD HELP US. If he can't listen to his generals he certainly does not need to be Commander-in-Chief. FROM A 30 VETERN OF THREE WARS WITH THE U.S. ARMY. AND UNTIL OBAMA CAME ALONG MIGHTY PROUD OF IT. Get off your lazy south end of a north bound mule and help our boys Vine Boy.

We're jumping on this guy for a horrible act not because it's horrible but because he's muslim!?!?!

SHould we condemn the cleveland killer because of his religion? How bout the guy in Florida for his? What about all the other mass killings (Waco, Manson, Mcveigh, etc.) that have happend and just condemn everyone who believes their religion.

There are radical muslims and peaceful muslims just like there are radical Christians (see killers of abortion doctors in the name of God, as if God wants anyone killed) and peaceful Christians.

We need to condemn this man for his horrible actions. We do not need to lump an entire religious belief in with it. I'm all for being cautious but intolerance shows much more ignorance than strength contrary to what some want to believe.

I find it hilarious that you rednecks who have never done a darned thing to defend this country, and have never given a darn about anyone but your sorry little selves are so up in arms about this. Seeing the intelligence levels you are demonstrating, I am not surprised that you all don't believe in evolution.

This is a national tragedy, that should bring all Americans together to honor and pay tribute to every soldier who lost their lives yesterday. I am saddened that this has been used to dishonor the president. In doing so, you are using the lives of the fallen soldiers to put your own self before the lives of others and this country. In my opinion, we need to realize the moral lesson here, that we need to stop this sensless act of violence, and work together as what we were intended to be, Americans.
Personally, anyone who uses this tragedy, which killed 12 soldiers; who are human lives, to put themselves and their money before the best interest of the country and its people needs to go to hell. It is sad that anyone, no matter their party, would use this for a political attack. It is just sad beyond belief. We should help and care for one another, not this. May the soldiers who lost their lives rest in peace, and be honored for their bravery to volunteer to fight in a war like this.

What happened at Ft. Hood was a tragedy. To amplify and distort it by called Pres. Obama "a monkey" and others "low-brows and inbreds", etc. just further fuels the flames of discord in our great nation. Today, at least today for one day, let's honor those who have fallen, support their families and hope the wounded will recover quickly. To do all these other diversionary things is to dishonor and disrespect their lives and their service. As M. Gandhi said, "An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind."

Kumbaya and prayers and turn the other cheek and all...
If this incident doesn't prove that religious fundamentalist is always a wolf in sheep's clothing than nothing does.
Doctor, US citizen, soldier, officer....pfft...just another muslim doing what muslims do best.
Muslims have us so bound up with our own political correctness that we're afraid to call out this problem for what it really is....we're busy trying to figure out how to be diplomatic with the muslim community and they trying to figure out how much explosive it would take to blow us up.
Maybe if the muslims promised to only target the people like dominican mama for obama then the rest of us "low brows" could sleep better in our own country.

Dear Golden State Girl – you are darned right that I am bitter. I am bitter at having Mr. Obama and your girl Pelosi determined to destroy healthcare in this country. I am bitter at being enslaved (yes enslaved) by people like you who steal my hard income to bribe the non-productive free loaders for their votes. I am bitter at nto being able to walk the streets of most large cities because the criminals rule them and are supported in their violence by people like you. I am bitter at Mr. Obama for chit chatting with his Marxist buddies just hours after one of Mr. Obama's jihadists butcher American at Ft. Hood. I am bitter with Mr. Obama giving aid and comfort to our enemies around the world.

The backlash of this will be felt by the Sikhs more than the Muslims in USA.
The simple reason for this is they are more visible by wearing a turban.

Oh, and I agree with everyone in this forum who is defending the President.

Stop attacking the President and support your rightfully elected leader with the respect he deserves.

You want your opinion to count more than his, or show him how to do things right, then run for President and get elected and we'll listen.

there was just another shooting today in Florida and it appears that the guy was a "regular American" so I guess the president is to be blamed for that as well. You who want to make a political statement out of this tradgedy should be ashamed of yourselves.

I pray for the soldiers who died in this tragedy.....and for the souls of some of you hateful people on this post...and most of all I pray for our President who inherited all this mess but is doing his best to lead us in a new direction.

For all you hate mongers...if you even think about harming the 1st African American President you better wake up and smack yourself. You will have nowhere to run or all will be guilty and pay dearly for your hate

This attack is really a Middle Eastern issue but it presented as if it is a religious conflict. There are more than one billion muslims living across the world from Indonesia to Bosnia to Nigeria and Libya. Considering that most, if not all, of the attackers since 9/11 are Arabs, the connection is really the Middle East issues. As long as American people get the news only thru the eyes of CNN or FOX news, they will not get the picture.

In the case of Arab connection, killing Palestininans in the hands of Israilis for years bred the 9/11. 9/11 bred the Killing of 650,000 Iraqis by the US invasion. Killing 650,000 Iraqis by US invasion and more killing of Palestininans by the hands of Israel bred the viloance in Fort Hood. Violance breeds violance. Pure and Simple.

One military axiom is that "friendly" fire isn't friendly if it's aimed at you.

This was not a case of friendly fire. This is an officer who went berserk and murdered fellow soldiers. His reasons for doing so were his own.

We should not judge others by the standards demonstrated by this individual as many of his ethnicity and cultural background are serving honorably. The wounded soldiers and their families and especially the families of the fallen have the compassion and support of all Americans worthy of the name.

I rarely, and I mean rarely, feel compelled to step up for politicians as I think they have stones enough to take care of themselves, but I am passed patience with the racism and general harshness towards this President. I don't know why in the world he wants to put himself through this. A troubled soldier snapped, an angry ex-employee went postal and Tim McVeigh did too much meth. It says nothing but nothing about those respective administrations. It says some people are wack jobs. The first President to even make the effort in years and this is what you all bring to the table. Really, I would not blame Barack Obama for saying to hell with this and moving to France.

Lets not jump to conclusions here. The man was a Muslim. He railed against the US involvement in Muslim countries. He declared that the US was involved in war on Islam. He deliberately carried loaded weapons on to the base showing malice aforethought. He was screaming "God is Great" when he mudered 12 of our soldiers.
So lets not jump to conclusions here?

I live in the orlando area and I am very sadened and was frigthened by today's events. What happened in Texas yesterday was horrible. Never should have happened and yes sorry but I expected more out of Obama yesterday when they broke to him live to get his reaction he spent 3 minutes (I counted) giving high fives and shout outs to his dudes and then spoke of what happened. Like what the H? Is this like I am at the academy awards and I have to be funny and give praise to my buddies before I talk about serious more important matters? Yes people Obama does hate America. That is a proven fact. Of course DR you like him because you live in the US and your country is very povish. I have missionary friends there.
