Washington (CNN) – Longtime Clinton ally and Democratic strategist James Carville had some rare words of praise for former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union. But, ever the good husband, Carville made sure to heap equal praise on his wife, Republican strategist Mary Matalin.
The two were discussing the recent controversial cover of Newsweek magazine, in which Palin is shown in running shorts. Carville said Palin should not complain about the use of a photo which was not a candid shot but one she had originally posed for, even if it were for a publication other than Newsweek. Echoing recent comments by Palin, Matalin disagreed and said she thought the Newsweek cover was sexist.
“You can agree on this,” Matalin asked her husband, “she looked good in it, right?”
“She does,” Carville said without hesitation, “Ain’t no doubt about that. You and her are the two best-looking women in the Republican Party,” the Democrat told his wife.

But Carville did not have much more positive to say about Palin.
While the Democratic strategist said Palin is “compelling” and connects with her supporters “in an unbelievable way,” Carville also said the former Alaska governor, believed by some political observers to be laying the groundwork for a 2012 White House bid, is not fit to be the nation’s chief executive.
“What I said about Sarah Palin on the day she was nominated [for the number two spot on the Republican presidential ticket last year], is still true. She’s uniquely and supremely unqualified to be president of the United States. But she’s got real presence about her. I find myself wanting to watch her more than I do most other politicians,” Carville told CNN Chief National Correspondent John King as Matalin looked on.
Matalin said Palin was good for the Republican Party as it begins to position itself for the 2010 midterms and the 2012 White House race.
“We’re ascendant in 2010,” Matalin said Sunday, “but we need people who can communicate the framework, the philosophy into which policy prescriptions can be put and [Palin] does that better than almost anybody.”
I disagree with Carville also. His wife is BETTER looking than Palin. And she's much, much smarter. (Anybody is.)
If the picture looks sexist, (I disagree with the charge – I simply think it reflects another poor choice by someone who wants to be Chooser in Chief), Palin has no one but herself to blame – she posed for it.
SNL did Palin and 2012 up very well last night at the beginning of the show. I am sure there is a clip at nbc dot com or youtube or somewhere....made it look like a movie premier and a scary one at that!
The tragic effects of too much swamp gas...
Sarah Palin quit her last political job to sell a book, and she would get annihilated in any sort of debate, bottom line that is why she will never get elected.
Come on you guys...she really is not even a pretty face, anyone man or woman who cannot stand out in the rain, especially while signing their ever so special book, and is afraid of leaking mascara is totally laughable, if not even to be pitied. I guess she melts when water hits her...lol...reminds me of, yep you guessed it...The Wizard of Oz. This lady is so totally lacking in anything that is of substance, all show, no smarts. As for Matlin and her obsessive love of Palin, well...it just makes me wonder if this lady, also, would melt. As for her husband, well...guess he has to live with her, need I say more?
Being pretty is Sarah's only asset, it's the only reason she ever got elected for anything. When she demonstrated her level of intelligence in the presidential race she was quickly exposed to all of those who can see through her shortcomings. Unfortunately so many of her supporters are those who see a pretty face and think there's someone home behind it. Her book has further exposed her as not being too bright.
The Sarah Paling stuff on CNN is getting SOOOOOOO boring.
If Sarah Palin is the future of the GOP, we are moving closer to a single party system.
That's got to be an interesting marriage.
It is normally hard for me to agree with Mr Carville. However, he makes a strong point. Sarah Palin posed for photos for Runners World. Newsweek did nothing unethical by publishing the photos. Sarah Palin wants it both ways: she wants to use her looks when it benefits her and when it does not, she wants to say she is a victim. She has the emotional maturity of a 10th grade girl. I wish her and her family well in private life. I sure as heck hope the Republicans can extricate themselves from Sarah, so sensible moderates can take over the GOP again.
No she is NOT!
Love watching the Libs come out of their skins when you just say "Sarah".
Makes me want to vote for her.
I think it's utterly pathetic that the media/DNC is still obsessing over Sarah Palin.
– She's no longer an elected official
– She's not campaigning for anything
They're so terrified of her, it's pathetic. Even though she's no longer governor, VP candidate, etc., they just can't seem to leave her alone.
Honestly, doesn't Carville have something mroe important to talk about than a mother of 5 who just released an autobiography? Seriously James, is that how pathetic your life is?
If they think she's such a 'non-threat,' then why can't they pass up an opportunity to try to destroy her?
They're terrified of a strong woman who is conservative, attractive, and pro-life.
Utterly pathetic.
I am fascinated by the fact that an out-of-work politician can attract so much media attention. Of course, this is the Age of Celebrity and people of great talent and people of no talent seem equally likely to be plastered across the front pages with embarrassing regularity. I am even more fascinated and surprised that left-leaning media outlets lavish so much attention upon her – it seems decidedly self-destructive.
That is correct! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
the only significant difference between sarah palin and the stereotypical dumb blond is the color of her hair. thank goodness, moderates and independents will never be stupid enough to vote for her which marginalizes her as a national candidate.
J Carville is king of the blow hards.
He looks stupid
He sounds stupid
He is stupid
We have a word for people like Palin where I'm from (Newfoundland), it's "stunned." Or for Palin, "some stunned."
Like my old fishing buddy always said. If she's honey I'll take my bread dry.
no comment LOL
The only thing good Palin is good that I see is drama. Her book should be called, "As the Sarah Turns".
Let's be thankful Pukin Palin polarises the republican party. That way dems will win by default.
I like Mary a lot but Sarah Palin is in a different league......
Sarah Palin/Liz Cheney 2012'
Obama is ONE and DONE. Start the chant.
Yes, please, let's have Pailin as the GOP offering for Prez in 2012. It will make things so much easier for Obama!
