[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/12/02/clintonjoke.jpg caption="Clinton makes light of Chelsea's engagement."]Washington (CNN)– Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made light of months of speculation regarding her daughter's engagement Wednesday during the House Armed Services Committee hearing on Afghanistan.

When congratulated on her daughter's engagement by New York Congressman Gregory Meeks, Clinton responded saying, "Thank you, it was a very long, thoughtful process."

Speculation of Chelsea Clinton's engagement and marriage began swirling early last summer.

According to an email sent out by Chelsea Clinton announcing her engagement, she and longtime boyfriend Marc Mezvinsky are planning to get married next summer.

Sen. Evan Bayh also took time out of the Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on Afghanistan to congratulate Clinton.

Again, who cares? This is a private matter, but because of "status" everyone THINKS that they deserve all the details. Baloney, leave them alone and best wishes!

Chelsea Clinton is an outstanding young woman. Smart, intelligent. A kind person. She is not one of those people who hogs the media spotlight. Rather, she has chosen to live her life as privately as possible.

The best way to judge the character of someone is to judge them by how well they raised their children. Chelsea is a child that ANY parent could be proud of. Good job, Bill and Hillary!

I do not blame her. People are down right sickening at times. I am sure she glad that her daughter is getting married but the world is still turning. In other words, it's no big thing!

I forgot to say one more thing – May God bless your entire family and Chelsea and her fiance have a long and happy life together.

  8. Nathan,

This young lady has been a class act since coming on the scene. Unlike some other recent first kids. Must be that liberal way of thinking.

...and Mrs. Clinton, it's a long process, though you should consider running in 2012!

I would love to refer to you as Madame President!

Chelsea and her fiance are class acts; both getting their education instead of getting babies. They are examples for all young people. Love them.

It cracks me up that people talk about Chelsea Clinton as if they know her personally - she is an "outstanding young woman". How do you know. And I agree with Felonious Monk - who is this appropriate news to be posted in the political ticker - it is better suited for People Magazine or the social pages of the newspaper.
