Black Caucus sends strong economic message to Obama

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="Caucus Chairwoman Rep. Barbara Lee and Rep. Emanuel Cleaver wrote Obama to plead for help for minorities.."]Washington (CNN) - Members of the Congressional Black Caucus called on President Obama Friday to address the skyrocketing unemployment rate facing minorities - especially African-Americans and Latinos - and greater economic conditions plaguing low-income communities.

"Our job is to make sure the legislation that gets to the president's desk responds to the degradation and the crisis in our community," said Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, at a Friday news conference. "Our community is bleeding. And we are the worst hit."

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate in November 2009 for blacks is at 15.6 percent - and 12.7 percent for Hispanics. In comparison, the rate for whites is 9.3 percent.

The latest job numbers show that a drop in the U.S. unemployment rate dropped from 10.2 percent to 10 percent in November.

"Our Nation has suffered substantial unemployment and underemployment over a prolonged period, which has imposed significant economic and social costs, particularly in communities of color," the December 9 letter, from Chairwoman Barbara Lee and Rep. Emanuel Cleaver to Obama, stated. "We appreciate your attention to these prescriptive measures and look forward to working with you."

Last I checked, they have every right to speak on the certains of constituents of their communities who have been struggling before the recession. I thought this was America? We can go liberate, people in other country, but it's wrong to focus on the needs those who are hurting the most?

It's sad that anything the black caucus says automatically gets shot down by some ignorant people who choose to kill the message before because they don't care for the message.

Although I think he should do what's right for any Americans struggling (regardless of their ethnic group), as President he must focus on the country as a whole. But it's sad.

It might be that you have many more people that want government give aways so they don't have to go back to work.

Nothing new this has been going on for to many years now.

Don't forget about us retirees who desperately need a job in order to supplement our social security and meager retirement plans. We are facing bankruptcy and foreclosures at an astounding rate! It is NOT just minoritie who need assistance in finding work. Seems that once an employer finds out you are over 65 - resume/application goes to file 13.

What they ask for will only hurt, Gov handouts of taxpayer monies are the same as the drug dealer on the corner he gets you hooked and dependent until you cannot stand on your own. This is what the country has come to, everyone begging for their fix of Obamabucks,
The worst part is the money isnt even his to give, it belongs to taxpayers that are not even born yet.

There is NO WAY to satisify these people...Every thing has to be GIVEN to them. Ever since Kennedy, got elected in 1960. They get free housing, free food, don't pay taxes, free utilities, use the ER in hospitals as their family doctor and want more and more hand outs every day.

  7. all the news that's fit to omit

Usual stupidity from Sniffit, for the record Bush is LOVED in Africa as he did more than any President ever to fight Aids, but you would have to actually read a book or a newspaper to know that.

The Congressional White caucus is meeting Sat........... nevermind, there NEVER would be such a thing.

Tell you what, get up, go to school, get an education, maybe join the military and learn a trade, then go to college, get a job and get married, raise a family, hey Stuffit, that's my life story, yours is filled with "Where's mine at" I bet?

The Black Caucus is a racially motivatied lobbist group. Should that be tolerated in America today?
