Hadassah Lieberman under attack over industry ties

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption=" Hadassah Lieberman is under attack over industry ties."] Washington (CNN) - Sen. Joe Lieberman – whose opposition to a public insurance option has drawn outrage from liberal groups for months – is used to finding himself in progressive crosshairs.

Now it's his wife's turn.

Activists are setting their sights on Hadassah Lieberman, launching a celebrity-studded petition drive to convince the nation's largest breast cancer non-profit to end the Connecticut senator's wife role as a spokeswoman.

The move to pressure the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation came the same day Lieberman's husband angered Democrats by announcing that he would not support an expansion of Medicare to cover individuals under the age of 55. Organizers did not point to that decision, instead citing Hadassah Lieberman's own ties to the health care industry.

Lieberman has worked as a consultant for companies including Pfizer and ALCO.

"We are asking Ellen DeGeneres, Christie Brinkley and other high-profile celebrities who are associated with Komen to demand that no more money raised for cancer treatment be given to Hadassah Lieberman or any other ex-Pharma/Insurance strategists," said Jane Hamsher, founder of the Firedoglake blog.

(Updated after the jump with statement from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation)

CNN has received the following statement from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation:

Hadassah Lieberman is an important and valued Global Ambassador for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. As a Global Ambassador, Ms. Lieberman is focused on helping us reach out and educate women outside our borders about breast cancer, sharing our knowledge and experience in a culturally sensitive way that is making a real impact on the lives of women across the globe. We have every intention of continuing our relationship with Ms. Lieberman in our mutual pursuit of a world without breast cancer.

Why are we affecting the progress of Cancer research? The article is unclear. Do they mean that Lieberman is getting money to be a spokes person for Cancer research? Shouldn't she be donating her time. And if she is getting money then are the other celebrities also getting money. Shouldn't they all be willing to donate to this worthwile cause. Why punnish anyone willling to donate time to this cause. Lets not let petty government effect organizations who actually care about finding a cure.

I don't know whether the Liebermans have children at home but, if they do, I fear for their safety. These so called "progressives" believe that anyone opposed to anything they want to do is fair game for the nuclear option. No deed is too dirty and no threat (either physical or other) is too dire. I believe they would even try to justify violence.

I am amazed at the animosity and intolerance of people these days. It's really okay to differ on political positions people. Maybe if we spent more time listening to each other instead of attacking each other and blaming someone else for all of our problems, we would begin to move forward as a country again.

Hadassah Lieberman's ties to the insurance and drug industry have been an open secret for months. It's long past time for her to face the consequences of her connections.

Liberals comes from liberty, so they are for freedom= liberty, but the freedom to oppose them is not something they understand. There is no difference between liberals and extreme religious zealots.

Gee. She cannot work for a charity just because she previously worked with a pharmacutical company? I saw let the libs keep their charities and petition the pharmacuticals to ban the purchase and use of their drugs by anyone who bashes a pharmacutical company.

What if Pfizer quits selling their products in the US? Are you going to complain about not having access to appropriate cancer drugs? What if all of the drug manufacturers decided to leave the US market?

It is a charity for researching cancer cures? Who do you think the foundation supports with the research? It also includes the same pharma companies you are complaining about.

C'mon guys the guy is a senator from Connecticut for crying out loud its one of the largest insurance states in the nation of course he is going to look out for them over regular people I can only imagine how much money they give him to stop the health care reform. The man is a disgrace now as he was when he lost the democratic primary and cried like a baby and decided to run as an independent.

Yet one more example of the anti-Semitic and anti-American hate that we have come to expect from the hatemongers on the left. If you disagree with the left, they will target you with a vengeance. Their fascism is growing tiresome.

Lieberman's "conscience" doesnt seem to extend to feeling bad about him having first class TAXPAYER FUNDED health insurance while some of his constituents are without.

sounds like a democratic liberal attack that someone like Harkin would start. The Democratic spenders like Obama, Harkin,Dodd, Pelosi and Reid need to have their backgrounds looked rerally closely at, maybe we as citizens should look closer to family and other relationships that they have, hmmmm. Might find something they dont like, haha.

The left is again showing it's fangs. They should be ashamed. I'm sure Mrs. Leibermann has done much good for the Komen foundation. What they should be doing is focusing on a cure for this awful disease.

I have donated for years but will cease because I cannot stand that a Lieberman is taking that money that I give (this is a PAID position, folks!) and enjoying it with her husband while HE is preventing millions of Americans from getting affordable health care that HE enjoys...

**I signed the petition because it is a conflict. They are both just two 'ugly' people looking for attention.

You might as well add alot of other Komen backers to the exclude list... i ran the Komen this year and do not support the "government" run health plan as written.

If Komen wants to get in the fight... then they will be the loser. I for one will stop running and contributing to Komen.

Ah, the concerned communist looking out for the rights of their fellowman. Oh why are you so bitter? Because the truth diverges so far between what you declare yourself, and what you desire. Your wants are so much greater than your compassion and understanding.
