Hadassah Lieberman under attack over industry ties

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption=" Hadassah Lieberman is under attack over industry ties."] Washington (CNN) - Sen. Joe Lieberman – whose opposition to a public insurance option has drawn outrage from liberal groups for months – is used to finding himself in progressive crosshairs.

Now it's his wife's turn.

Activists are setting their sights on Hadassah Lieberman, launching a celebrity-studded petition drive to convince the nation's largest breast cancer non-profit to end the Connecticut senator's wife role as a spokeswoman.

The move to pressure the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation came the same day Lieberman's husband angered Democrats by announcing that he would not support an expansion of Medicare to cover individuals under the age of 55. Organizers did not point to that decision, instead citing Hadassah Lieberman's own ties to the health care industry.

Lieberman has worked as a consultant for companies including Pfizer and ALCO.

"We are asking Ellen DeGeneres, Christie Brinkley and other high-profile celebrities who are associated with Komen to demand that no more money raised for cancer treatment be given to Hadassah Lieberman or any other ex-Pharma/Insurance strategists," said Jane Hamsher, founder of the Firedoglake blog.

(Updated after the jump with statement from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation)

CNN has received the following statement from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation:

Hadassah Lieberman is an important and valued Global Ambassador for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. As a Global Ambassador, Ms. Lieberman is focused on helping us reach out and educate women outside our borders about breast cancer, sharing our knowledge and experience in a culturally sensitive way that is making a real impact on the lives of women across the globe. We have every intention of continuing our relationship with Ms. Lieberman in our mutual pursuit of a world without breast cancer.

Joe Leiberman should be stripped of his powers in the Senate. His interests rest primarily with he and his wifes financial benefactors rather than the interests of the American people and the citizens of Connecticut.

Typical personal smear and hate campaign by the compassionate 'left'. They should be ashamed, but they have no shame.

The Senator from the State Of Israel.

This creep is willing to risk the ruin of Health Care Reform for millions, because his itty bitty sissy feelings are hurt because the Dems dumped on him in his last election, which he won anyway.

What a disgusting small time individual.

And now, the Mrs., a power behind the potty upon which he sits, has dirty skirts. OK, Jose, you want to play dirty? Watch your back!

Looks like husband and wife are both in bed with big-money insurance. What little respect I once had for Sen Lieberman`s independence is now completely gone. He appears to be another third-rate politician taking money from corporations while ignoring the will of the people.

Ah yes, the far left puritans are out in full force. Not only are you akin to a slavery supporter if you don't support their massive government expansion and spending but the good work that you do should be taken from you as well. So much for honest debate about what is right for this country.

Politicians as well as their wives/husbands benefit from proceeds that the health industry pay them - I think its only fair that when they profit from these industries - it should be Pointed Out - therefore it explains further why they vote on legislation the way they do.

Typical for the left to attack the family members of those they have policy disagreements with. At least they didn't shoot at Hadassah like they did at Lou Dobbs' wife.

This is a rediculous and mean spirited action, but considering who the supporters are, It's totally understanding. However, I would have expected better from Christie Brinkley and Trisha Yearwood. These people need to look farther than the end of their noses and see what a government controlled health system will look like. Freedom as we have known it in our country is definitely disappearing.............

Every time one wonders just how petty Lieberman can get in his thirst for revenge against the Democrats who didn't support him in his last senate bid.....he proves that he can in fact go lower. Take your shots while you can go......your own constituents thought they were voting for the old Joe Lieberman....not this new vengeful, petty republican one, so I doubt you'll be back next time around

Wow! This is a real shocker ! Sorry. Not really.

Are there still Americans "out there" who are not aware of how much there elected reps are bought & sold by "BIg Special Interest ?

By the way. Keith Olbermann (like him or hate him) was onto this story / connection months ago.

Good catching up by CNN and the rest of News World. Oh. Of course Faux News. But then again. They will never, ever catch up.

Enjoy your Voice in our Government.

It is a shame that some Activists would use thier postions for this and not for the work of finding a cure for this disease. People who donate their time and money should take a hard look at some of these organizations and celebrities. Do they really have the best interest at heart for the people who are fighting for their lives?

He is protecting insurance companies in his state not helping the citizens. Let's do a poll in his state and really see what the voters want him to do! If he can't represent the voters he should quit.

These people are sick. They are letting their personal politics get into the middle of this. These attacks on Lieberman's wife are uncalled for and show a lack of intelligence on their part. Shame on you all! If the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation allows this kind of blackmail they won't get one more donation from me.

Joe Lieberman makes me sick. I think the Medicare at 55 is a make sense start to help people at that age who may retire early, get canned from their jobs, or lose their health insurance, or cannot get it because of private only offerings. I am sure people who buy into this would initially have to pay through the nose to get it, but it is a start. What are his reasons for being against it???? Just because he is old and has his health care taken care of for life, does not mean that there are not millions of people in different circumstances. I thought of the Medicare at 55 idea that a person could buy into years ago. It does not take a PHD to figure that one out.

This is the problem with Congress doing anything–they ALL (Especially the Republicans) have too many ties to business and insurance companies! They aren't interested in helping the public–only themselves!

    This is fair.

She has been very questionable. Lieberman has been a suspect closet-big-Pharma supporter for some time, too. They've made a lot of money from big Pharma...

Many of his wife's "pay bonuses" were give very suspiciously around moves by him to support big Pharma. So instead of them paying him directly, they give a 'bonus' to his wife. Multiple times. Very suspect.

It is sad that the Liberals have to use threats and violence to poush their point through. Setting up vigilant groups, wanted posters (Chamber of Commerce), etc. shows where this country is going to. Believe me folks when I say a Civil War is in the brewing. Regular Americans will not put up with this. Why does the Liberals have to use Hollywood celebrities to push their point across. They are just a bunch of idiots! Wake up America! Before it is too late. END OF TIMES IS COMING!

Joe Lieberman is (and it seems that is his wife) a slimy, duplicitous, self-serving individual who should be stripped of his elected office. Although he is not alone among so many in Congress who are linked to corporations through contributions, Joe Lieberman has only his own interests before him and in no way can be considered a public servant. What a jerk; it seems he has no shame, no sense of decency about how he presents himself. Slimy is the word......
