New poll shows Michelle Obama's stock is on the rise

Washington (CNN) - Michelle Obama's stock is on the rise as more Americans approve of how she is handling her role as first lady now than they did 10 months ago, according to a new Marist College Poll.

The survey shows that 57 percent of registered voters approve of Obama's performance as first lady, up 7 points from a Marist poll conducted in March. Twenty-four percent said it has been fair, while 10 percent thought she is doing a poor job.

But Obama is not viewed as a transformative first lady. Only 37 percent said she has changed the role for the better, while 46 responded she has done nothing to change it. Another 10 percent said Obama has changed it for the worse, while 7 percent were unsure.

The poll of 858 registered voters was conducted on December 2, 3 and 7. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.

Laura Bush was a first class first lady who was an educator and a staunch supporter of our troops. She is an amazing woman. Michelle is a left wing debutante who let the taxpayers foot the bill for her ivy league education and, like her husband, is learning as she goes. I can't wait until they are both gone and back in the streets of Chicago where they belong.

Mrs. Obama is doing just fine in her new role. Like it or not, she is a trailblazer as there are no examples of other African American women who have been in this role. And yes, her ethnic background and upbringing do make her unique. Her approach to things will be different. Not better, not worse, just different. She isn't Mrs. Clinton. She isn't Mrs. Bush or even Mrs. Kennedy. She is her own woman and quite frankly, there's really no reason for this poll. Again, she is doing just fine as the First Lady of the United States which is exactly what I expected... Let's move on.

The Obamas act like nouveau rich.

To me they are nothing more than wanna-be jet-setters during a time in our country when weekly partying or jet-setting should not be taking place.

And if the taxpayers of this country are paying for all of this - such as flying in chefs and cooks from around the country instead of hiring locally - it's now injury upon insult.

Why is she evaluated on whether she is "transformative" in her role as first lady? It is interesting to consider this is likely referring to the gender implications of the historical role of first ladies. I'm wondering why men, in similar positions as Michelle Obama, are not evaluated on whether they are "transformative"? Why aren't men evaluated on traits, such as child-care involvement, that are typically associated with gender.

She rocks...We don't want our 1st ladies setting or selling policy.
Most important she appears to be an amazing mother with her priorities being her 2 girls. We have not had a 1st lady so gracious since Jackie....Keep it up Michelle...

Why does her approval rating even matter? Why does she even have one?

I can't recall any first lady who has ever garnered anywhere as much attention as Mrs. Obama. Quite frankly, I don't see what the big fuss is all about....

What's not to like? She's attractive, intelligent, her own person, has a good sense of humor, and is a wonderful wife and mother.

A great role model for women and girls everywhere!
