Obama near climate change accord with China, others

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="Obama near climate change accord with China, others."]
COPENHAGEN, Denmark (CNN) - President Obama is in the final stages of closing a climate change deal with China and other key nations that is expected to be sealed before the president heads home from the Copenhagen summit late Friday, according to a senior administration official.

A second source, an administration official as well, adds that the president is about to announce a "meaningful agreement."

This official acknowledged that "it's not sufficient to combat the threat of climate change but it's an important first step."

The first official told CNN Obama was going over an "approved text" with Chinese officials that would set a non-binding goal of reducing the Earth's temperature by 2 degrees Celsius over the next decade.

The second official added: "We entered this negotiation at a time when there were significant differences between countries. Developed and developing countries have now agreed to listing their national actions and commitments, a finance mechanism, to set a mitigation target of 2 degrees Celsius and to provide information on the implementation of their actions through national communications, with provisions for international consultations and analysis under clearly defined guidelines."

The second official concluded: "No country is entirely satisfied with each element but this is a meaningful and historic step forward and a foundation from which to make further progress. We thank the emerging economies for their voluntary actions and especially appreciate the work and leadership of the Europeans in this effort."

HELLO!!! The temperatures are ALREADY DROPPING and have been for 10 YEARS! We aren't anything and it isn't costing us ANYTHING?! This scam is just being used to shift TRILLIONS of dollars to other countries.

Wake up America! Obama is selling this country down the drain FAST.

Small steps, people. No deal is perfect, but doing nothing would be worse. Was America's Constitution complete and perfect right from its onset? Of course not. Did we abandon it because of that? Hell no! It took over a century to get it to its current form, and even now it is not complete or perfect. But step by step we get closer to getting it right.

...would set a non-binding goal of reducing the Earth's temperature by 2 degrees Celsius over the next decade.

    He's making a deal that:

    1. He has absolutely no authority to make.
    2. Has no clue what it will take to make this reduction.
    3. Has no clue to the benefits/hazards of such a reduction.
    4. and it's

But hey, he's not coming home empty handed and that's his #1 look good.

I can't comprehend the amount of idiocy that is piled up in Copenhagen right now. It almost makes DC pale in comparison.

I appreciate the efforts of everyone who worked hard to hammer this agreement out on behalf of my children and my children's children. I hope everyone follows through on their promises.

Enough with the negativism and denial.

JT the Show Me State College Freshman......maybe you should finish a year or two before you start telling us what we should do.

In a way, I am glad you pointed that out, now you can know that I plan to get at least a Masters Degree in Communication Studies and at least that long on my minor, Political Science. After I get a job, after completing a masters degree, I am planning to save up money to get a PhD in the major and minor of which I plan to do.
I am also involved in College Democrats (I know you hate that but I have to be honest, since you asked), Coalition Green (a group dedicated to helping the environment that affects all 6.7 billion of us), Habitat for Humanity (helps those who cannot afford homes on their own aka helping the poor), and Outreach committee in Cape County, Missouri (helps serve to local food banks, good will, and public schools). I even got invited by my advisor, Dr. Underburg, to join the debate team, since my GPA is a 3.4 on a 4.0 scale right now. I am also an Eagle Scout.
What have you achieved or have in mind for a goal in your life?

The people who are ignorant about global warming are the same people who did not believe that Swine Flu was a threat. As long as they have something to be negative about and something they can blame Obama for, they are happy. They are idiots and unfortunately even when they are proven wrong, they are too stupid to know they were wrong. Global warming is real and it is a threat to the world. Even baby steps taken by the world to work together is better than not working together at all.

Sounds like my 'nonbinding' resolution to lose 20 pounds. I don't think either one will happen, but Obozo will get his teleprompter moment out of it. After all it's not whether you're good that counts, it's whether you look good.

I think it's important to note that some of the leading climate deniers are also creationists. A fact which just about says everything which needs to be said about people who oppose cap & trade.

The world leaders are meeting in Copenhagen to discuss the most challenging threat humanity ever encountered. Everybody is watching to see what the outcome would be. Will it be a sufficient response, or would it be a small step that requires more momentum in the near future.
Nations and states in all of humanities history up until the twentieth century were highly competitive. However, after World War I those nations realized that the threat of global wars can be a disaster to humanity and acted to meet this threat with the creation of The League of Nations. That was replaced by the United Nations after World War II when it proved to be unable to meet the grave challenge of another global war.
Meeting the challenge of Climate Change is even more challenging than global wars. It requires a higher level of trust and cooperation. This will not be met by single sided commitments from some nations while other sit and watch. It can only succeed if all nations agree and implement a properly monitored plan. All nations should commit and coordinate actions to reduce CO2 emission, stop deforestations, and provide aid to nations that are hardly hit by Climate Change to help them make the necessary adaptations to adhere to this plan.
We are witnessing a turning point in history. Will humanity have the foresight, wisdom and commitment to act responsibly? Competition is preventing the assembled states from reaching an effective agreement in Copenhagen. Will they conclude that they need to cooperate instead? There is a real need for change, where we fight together to save humanity, to save our children and mankind.
The good intentions of world leaders after World War I created the League of Nations, which proved to be ineffective and did not prevent the world from doing it all again within two decades. Will we allow Copenhagen to be the Climate Change League of Nations, or will we make the leap and come up with the effective solution now?
Now is the time for the world to change its ways and give momentum to the “Audacity of Cooperation”. It is the future of our planet that is in stake here. Our only home. We can act recklessly or act responsibly. It is our choice. This would be the test for our far sight, for our wisdom.

    A "non-binding goal"?

Guess what, that is exactly what we have today. That means nothing, except taxpayers paid for yet another Obama vacation. Oh, and Pelosi and 25 congressman. What a waste of taxpayer money. I can't believe i voted for this guy.

mjm, if you can top that, I will at least give you the credit you deserve. An Eagle Scout alway is honest with everyone. If you have already achieved those goals in your life and if you have higher goals than that, then you will be a worthy person to have an online debate with on any subject. Climate, Healthcare reform, the wars in Iraq and Afganistan, abortion, embryonic stem cell research, intelligent design vs evolution ( I have to admit I am a Deist: someone who believes a higher power guided the 14 billion year old universe), the entire history of our great country, and gun rights, which I believe should be kept, but I think the training should be a lot more safety oreiented and thorough on how to safely hunt and handle a gun. I can debate with you a lot of other topics. If you want to add me as a friend on Facebook, we can have an intelligent discussion about those issues. Have a good night and good luck.
