Obama near climate change accord with China, others

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="Obama near climate change accord with China, others."]
COPENHAGEN, Denmark (CNN) - President Obama is in the final stages of closing a climate change deal with China and other key nations that is expected to be sealed before the president heads home from the Copenhagen summit late Friday, according to a senior administration official.

A second source, an administration official as well, adds that the president is about to announce a "meaningful agreement."

This official acknowledged that "it's not sufficient to combat the threat of climate change but it's an important first step."

The first official told CNN Obama was going over an "approved text" with Chinese officials that would set a non-binding goal of reducing the Earth's temperature by 2 degrees Celsius over the next decade.

The second official added: "We entered this negotiation at a time when there were significant differences between countries. Developed and developing countries have now agreed to listing their national actions and commitments, a finance mechanism, to set a mitigation target of 2 degrees Celsius and to provide information on the implementation of their actions through national communications, with provisions for international consultations and analysis under clearly defined guidelines."

The second official concluded: "No country is entirely satisfied with each element but this is a meaningful and historic step forward and a foundation from which to make further progress. We thank the emerging economies for their voluntary actions and especially appreciate the work and leadership of the Europeans in this effort."

Anyone who supports the president in these ridiculous agreements and loses his/her job as a result and whose house is foreclosed upon also as a result – I feel no sympathy for you. Actions have consequences – a phrase that is lost on a democrat or liberal. But you go to bed feeling good about yourself tonight...ok.

I think there is a difference between the radical right or left and the viewpoint of some of the rest of us. I acknowledge we might have it all wrong. Warming may not be real. Projections are always uncertain. But how much risk are you willing to pass to your grandchildren if global warming is real? What right do I have to inflict these potential consequences? I choose to live responsibly, and part of that means acting prudently in the face of risk.

MatthewDetroit: I may not agree with what you said there, but I will defend to the death your right to say it; that comes with consenquences though. The tounge is the most powerful weapon in the history of mankind; it can either give you success beyond what you can dream of, or it can ruin your life for as long as you live. It is up to you how you want to live your life, but here is a quote from this person I know, my mom: Thoughts lead to words, words lead to what you do, what you do will lead you to how you are as a person, how you are as a person will lead to you where destiny or where history will put you at. So think very carefully when a thought pops up in your mind, it may determine where you end up in history, life, or both.

This is being called an "accord"? A "non-binding goal". What kind of authority does one derive from a non-binding goal. I guess it translates to "we will really want to do it over the next few years, but if we don't... whatever. But don't worry, we'll tax you for it anyway."

That's a full degree cooler than the average over the last 1000 years (according to Michael Mann's (in)famous hockey stick graph) i.e. assuming anthropogenic CO2 is solely responsible for the purported increase in temperatures over the last 100 years, we would have to decrease the total amount of CO2 in the atmosphere by more than the total amount that man has contributed since the start of the industrial revolution (presumably signficantly before the end of the next ten years)?

To put it another way, instead of reducing the rate of increase of CO2 increase, we would have to find a way to litteraly suck it out of the atmosphere...

and were will all the ney sayers hide when global warming increases and we all die from no water or anything to eat and can't continue to breath the toxins in the air ? guess they will all pack up and move out into space and find another planet to suck up and drain resorces from ,so they can breed stupidity . the president and many other people in the world are correct. humanity like many species can evolve given time , but at the rate of toxins in the air and water and soil we will all be doomed to our own stupidity and greed. a million years from now I hope that what ever kind of CREATOR LIVES ON THE PLANET WILL DIG UP THE INFORMATION WE WASTEFUL CREATURES LEFT BEHIND and can do better than we have done. I am sorry to all the other creators on the planet that have to put up with humanities stupidity.

There is a reason that the now snow covered land of Greenland "was" called Greenland when it was founded. I guess all the open fires of our ancestors caused that one....

To JT The Show Me State....

You need to get off the computer and get laid guy. You are way too high strung. Seriously, if you need to vomit your "credentials" in a luandry list of college achievements, then you have a lot to learn.

Also, a masters in communication? You are just throwing money away.

Why do we have to pay poor countries 100 billion dollars? Especially when we are struggling and broke ourselves. It seems like every "success" our President has costs us another trillion bucks and we go further in debt. If Obama has much more "Success" America will be bankrupt.

Wow, what a magician Obama is. He's announced and agreement to sit and talk about what it is we can do to make progess on climate change. He calls that a breakthrough.

I now understand why he rated himself a B+, his standards are extremely low.

    Change? Pewwy!

A non-binding agreement??? Isn't that really just saying "you only have to do this if you feel like it" Even a signed agreement, Kyoto Protocol, was ignored by most of the signees.

Obama achieved nothing and is now trying to save face with this crap. Copenhagen was a complete and utter failure and NOTHING came out of it. Of course that won't stop Obama from spinning this as a succes and siphoning billions of borrowed money from the US taxpayers and giving it to corrupt gov'ts. And pushing to get the "Goldman Sachs/Al Gore Make Billions Cap and Trade Tax" passed...

I only will state this: If it is truly about the state of the world climate
money would not be a factor!
However the only thing the world leaders seem to want is money!
That in it self answers any questions I have about the science that
    has been presented!

The Earth's axial tilt varies between 22.1° and 24.5° (but see below), with a 42,000 year period, and at present, the tilt is decreasing. In addition to this steady decrease, there are also much smaller short term (18.6 years) variations, that is also affected by Sun's gravitation in its depleting angle relative to Earth's, known as nutation.

This relates to the 21,000 year cycles predicted by Milankovitch.

The earth is going to get warmer due to it's rotation for the next few decades so Obama better come up with a super ice machine if he is going to reduce the temerature 2 degrees in 10 years.

Soul Glow-"I think it's important to note that some of the leading climate deniers are also creationists. A fact which just about says everything which needs to be said about people that oppose cap and trade." Really? Where did you get this new 'Fact?" Al Gore? This is more of a FACT. Almost 90% of the climate warmers get MONEY from their Governments and special interests who believe in man-made warming. Follow the money and you will find the true beliefs of climate warmers. Lining their pockets with money.

Guess he had to bring something home to appease some of the lefties. it doesn't matter though...non-binding means exactly that, non-binding. It doesn't matter if it were binding anyway. China would never meet the goal and wouldn't even try. We would meet the goal either, BTW.

This is like China and others voting present like the lying fraud in chief liked to do instead of making tough and "icky" decisions.

How much did this non-binding BS cost me in Billions Barry?

Billions that we don't have, have to borrow and then GIVE to someone, wow, ONLY A LIBERAL nitwit could think this is a good idea.

    2010 and 2012 – I can't wait.

I hope all you kool-aid drinking, liberal freaks on here soon realize what your Party's ridiculous leadership is doing to this great Nation. Democrats and their liberal tax and spend idiocy will soon be in the unemployment line with millions of other Americans they put there!
