Obama delays Hawaii vacation over Senate vote

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="Obama was already on his Hawaii vacation at this time last year."](CNN) - He was already relaxing on the beaches of Hawaii last year at this time, but President Obama said Tuesday his annual vacation to the Aloha State won't begin this year until the Senate passes the health care bill.

"I will not leave until my friends in the Senate have completed their work," Obama said Tuesday. "My attitude is that if they're making these sacrifices to provide health care to all Americans then the least I can do is be around to provide them any encouragement and last-minute help where necessary. That's the deal."

A final vote on the Senate health care bill is currently scheduled for 7 pm ET on Christmas Eve, though it could come earlier in the day if Republicans yield some of their debate time.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Tuesday the president's actual vacation plans won't be determined until the vote has taken place.

I don't like the bill, but at least this is a president who won't declare war then go on vacation or strum a guitar while fund raising as a major city is decimated.

Nice to see that our President puts his responsibilities to the country first. Seems like Bush was on vacation in Crawford or Kennebunkport more than he was in Washington tending to business. Hmmmm, maybe that was a good thing!

In all of the political back-and-forth, I think we lose sight of how this president is a stand-up guy. I think he can be seen to follow a strong and disciplined work ethic, regardless of one's opinions about his policies.

Before you use that 1:00 am vote as a club, remember that the party of "no" used delaying tactics to force it then. If they really cared about the American public, they would have finished this bill with input from both parties, had a bill that made most people happy and been home before last week's snow. When your sole party goal is to stop the president, then you can stay up to 3:00 am for all I care since you made that decision. I really think they should stay continously in session with quorum calls every 20 minutes day and night until they decide to help the American people and not the insurance industry and their lobbying friends.

Good grief. If you listen quietly you can hear the violins playing in the background. Everything with this guy is symbolism over substance.

President Obama doesn't turn down any chance to make himself out to be this heroine figure.

What a joke.....He turned down his annual vacation to Hawaii to help back his garbage healthcare bill. Hasn't the guy already golfed more times in his first year that Bush did in his first term???

    so much for sacrifice.....

How many vacations has he taken this year? I recall the Grand Canyon thing and wasn't there another one shortly before or after?
I get a lousy 3 weeks a year. Obviously his is a more important job but then shouldn't he be working hard? Don't give me any gibberish about how he works so hard, he is supposed to be working hard. That is what is expected of a president. Bush takes a month off, BO just spreads it over the year?
I only wish he had gotten more involved in the health care debate; now he can point to a bill being passed and take credit and say I wasn't involved when the bill turns out not to be as good as promised. He sure bailed on the public option didn't he. BO could have shown some leadership but he didn't.

Thank you Mr. President for caring about us. Merry Christmas to you, The First Lady, and the First Family. I made the right choice when I donated to your campaign and volunteered during your campaign. So did my family, neighbors, friends, coworkers, and churchmembers.

You calculate how many vacations Bush took - and how often his brain was on vacation while he was in D.C.

    @ Will
Anyone who thinks his 24-36 hour stay in Copenhagen was a vacation has no idea about the insurmountable problems that occurred there. Read your current events before making ignorant comments – finally we have a President who cares about issues that count.

hope comes back relaxed, and refreshed, and that his game while there gets the practice it needs; could not help wondering, since the #1 golfer in the world will be on extended leave, does that mean the PGA will resind the "v" grooves taking effect Jan.1st, and will all tournaments now play 700 yards shorter..just a thought..

How nice that Obama get to go on another vacation, this time to Hawaii. While 10% plus of the polulation don't even have a job. If the stimulus that had to be passed with out a days delay had worked as well as he said it would, less than 8% would be unemployed and unable to afford a vacation. Doesn't matter to Obama though, he keeps pushing congress to pass bills a majority of voters do not want. Obama clearly does not care about the common voter whether it is concerning government policy or even if they have a job. Obama is really all about Obama, which is really kind of funny because a direct result of his flipping off voters is that his approval rating in most polls is less than 50% now. Hard to be a historic beloved president when you cram bills down the throats of voters they don't want.

Why is it good when Obama takes a vacation, and bad when Bush took one? I've still not figured that one out.

A comment on your picture caption as well, "Obama was already on his Hawaii vacation at this time last year." Please remember, "Obama was not yet president at this time last year." There is a difference. Why the comparison?

    Dear Perusing Through,

Your lack of understanding of the process by which a bill becomes law is only outdone by your obvious lack of understanding of what is really in this bill.
