Obama orders review of flight screenings

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="President Obama has ordered a review of security screening processes after Friday's botched terror attack on a U.S. airliner, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Sunday."](CNN) - President Obama has ordered a review of security screening processes after Friday's botched terror attack on a U.S. airliner, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Sunday.

Appearing on the ABC program "This Week" and the NBC program "Meet the Press," Gibbs said Obama is receiving regular briefings by his national security staff on the incident in which a suspect allegedly tried to detonate an explosive device on a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam, The Netherlands, making its final approach to Detroit, Michigan.

The suspect, 23-year-old Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was on a broad watch list of 550,000 names since last month, Gibbs said.

That list does not automatically bring tighter screening of individuals, Gibbs said, and Obama has ordered a review of the procedures for determining which people on the list undergo more stringent checking.

The problem in the US is that we have so much so called privacy laws that the TSA is even affraid to go much further with screening procedures of people at the airport with the fear to be sued.
If it is up to me they should have machines looking in the bones abdomen, private part of anybody willing to get in the plane.
If you don't want it take a bus or train.

Another Taliban leader killed in Pakistan today. I've lost count how many since Obama took office. And we're not hearing a peep from the Pakistan gov't anymore. We're picking them off left and right and Pakistan is cooperating since G'dub left office. Hrmmmmm.

G'dub was focused on oil profits in Iraq and rebuilding profits for Haliburton. I think President Obama is focused on finding Bin Laden. We'll get him in 2010....I'll bet!!!

How about airport screening of any and all Muslim men and women from the ages 14 on up. Unfortunately the democrats and the rest of the P.C. lot will howl over that one. But until the people from the religion of Peace can prove themselves to be peaceful and not want ing to butcher innocent people, tougher screenings should be imposed on this group. Since 9/11 there have been over 1,500 plus attacks by peace loving Muslims around the world.

Bla, bla, bla, 'no terrorist attack since 9/11 under Bush'... sure, no foreign attack on mainland US soil! But that discounts the thousands of terrorist attacks our soldiers faced in Iraq where Bush served them up to terrorists as easy targets on a daily basis! We've had more attacks and made more enemies because of the 'security' policies of the last administration that now we have to make up for. Thank you Bush for making this country sooo much safer!

You would think after 8 years, we would have figured out how to look for explosives in clothes by now.

How many people at TSA speak english as a second language? I ask this not to sound like a bigot (I am not one and even went to college) but I think American citizens should be responsible for American citizens security. When I was in law enforcement for 26 plus years, I never worked with somebody who could not speak clear, understandable English (safety thing, very important to communicate well). TSA does not pay well, and sad but true, you get what you pay for. John Madden and I will ride the bus.

there is an inherent danger to the presence of alcohol onboard an airplane, being in liquor bottles or after shave, as they can be used as an accelerant. wIth a piece of cloth or string and a match or a cig lighter... why do we still allow that onboard? Anything hidden in the crotch should not be off limit for the screeners and there should be cameras in the toilets as it would be too late if someone lights a fire there.

In the 9/11 attacks, the terrorists used a scheme unimaginable to most persons in our society.
If similar terrorists want a bomb on another plane, they won't hesitate to hide it in a baby.

We are a Constitutional Republic ... a nation under law. If we sink to the level of the terrorists, we BECOME the terrorists.

One might better ask who created the climate of world-wide hatred of Americans: GEORGE W. BUSH.

That said, the silence from "peaceful" Muslim clerics over this latest outrage is DEAFENING.

The Screening problem was not in the United States. TSA so far has been doing a good job for the complication thus far in assessing who is about to carry out a terrorist act. Europe has not been screening as stringent as done in the United States. I know some would gladly like to politicize this terrorist act because of their political party affliation and hate for President Obama because they may not like him as a person. But put all these personal views aside, he has done a very good job in dealing with terrorism so far. What the United States has to do now is to ensure that other countries have these same security measures in place to prevent terrorism. For example, I have travelled to other countries and found that I did not have to take off my shoes during security screening. How could this be? We can not enforce our law on other countries but we can work with them to ensure we are on the same page. I think this president is capable of doing that. He seems to have a good relationship with other countries. Some countries have already began the process as a result of this butch terrorist attack. Remember, we are fighting an ideology. It if much more difficult to fight and ideology, especially one that has a religious component. For example, those who believe that Mr Obama should not be president will not support any of his policies regardless of how good. Ideological views can be dangerous.
