Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama is scheduled to speak about the earthquake in Haiti Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET, according to White House spokesman Tommy Vietor.

Obama received two memorandums updating him on the situation earlyWednesday morning, Vietor said. One of the memos, from the president's national security adviser, described "key decisions that have been made, and actions that have already been taken," Vietor said.

Obama also received an additional update from his national security staff Wednesday morning, Vietor added.

The powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on Tuesday, destroying scores of structures while knocking down phone and power lines.

Its a bad situation in Haiti.... but it will be interesting to see how much attention the President gives this as opposed to more major issues at home.

My Haitian brothers and sisters are in need of assistance. There is an Emergency Response Team poised for departure out of neighboring VA. I am so happy that our President is being kept updated in real time about what is needed and occurring. I have no doubt with Obama that whatever can be done for Haiti will be done in a timely manner. How sad. From what I understand the majority of the people there are living in extreme poverty, and now to have this happen.
Makes us realize that even with the problems we face, we have much
    to be thankful for.

Haiti needs all the help it can get at the moment. By the Grace of God, my family and friends are all ok. Please keep the people of Haiti in your prayers. LaPriye pou tout moun Ayiti.

The lack of compassion, and, frankly, heartless contempt for the people of Haiti from conservatives is telling.

Christ is watching. Shame on you.

Those poor Haitians just can't seem to catch a break. They go from one bad thing happening to them, to another. I hope that we as human beings try hard to sympathize with them and do what we can to help. If I have ever seen people who need our help more, it is these people. May God have mercy on them and us.
