Top Obama spokesman joins Twitter

In his first tweet, White House Press Secretary sought advice from the Twitterverse.

In his first tweet, White House Press Secretary sought advice from the Twitterverse.

Washington (CNN) – Count White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs among a growing group of Democratic press operatives who have recently joined the microblogging site Twitter.

The top White House spokesman set up his Twitter account Saturday, Gibbs confirmed to CNN; Gibbs goes by the Twitter handle @PressSec on the popular service.

Gibbs’ arrival on Twitter comes as a number of his colleagues in the Democratic communications apparatus have also joined the site which allows users to broadcast short messages.

Earlier Saturday, Lynda Tran (@LyndaOFA), the national press secretary for President Obama’s grassroots political organization Organizing for America, informed the media via e-mail that she had joined Twitter.

And on Friday, Organizing for America announced that it was looking for a new social networks manager who will be responsible, among other things, for managing the Twitter account @BarackObama. (The official White House Twitter account, @whitehouse, is separate and run by the White House.)

Less than two weeks ago, Hari Sevugan (@HariDNC), the Democratic National Committee’s national press secretary began tweeting. About the same time, Sevugan’s colleague DNC communications director Brad Woodhouse (@woodhouseb) joined Twitter.

In mid January, Deputy White House Press Secretary Bill Burton (@billburton44) began using a previously dormant Twitter account.

And last month, President Obama made history when he personally clicked the send button on a tweet from the @RedCross account while on a visit to the Washington headquarters of the Red Cross.

The move by Gibbs and other Democratic communications professionals comes after months of dominance by conservatives and Republicans on Twitter and other social media platforms like YouTube.

I wonder why so many people have to be so hateful. I'm almost 62 years old and in all my life, I have never seen such disrespect for our government. I've known of dissatisfaction with it in the past but the open hate and disrespect was never so open. People, we need to start becoming more civil least we find ourselves back in the dark ages where there was no law and order. Please Americans, try to be more respectful. Disagree with and even disapprove of the government or administration but be respectful and at election time make your voices herd through your vote.

I am a liberal Democrat, but this is just stupid. Twitter is for kids with super short attention spans and nothing better to do. Please, give us information seekers a little bit of credit.

It constantly grieves me when I read the comments of so many obviously cynical citizens who do not realize themselves that they are expressing opinions about things they do not know-not knowing that they do not know anything about the subject or person in play, tyet going about it in the most arrogant and uncivilised manner they like to accuse Washington of.What does this tell us about this country? Are we here becoming laughing stock candidates for the rest of an "informed" world?People who have trouble with their grammar not only display their lack of education, but even more so their unwitting ignorance.Luckily we do encounter the odd well written and intelligence revealing opinion, which gives hope for a USA that struggles to survive..Keep on struggling Mr.Prez. !

Just more confirmation of total delusional thinking
& lack of acknowledgment in reality based priorities.
With this Administration, IT IS ALWAYS "THE MESSAGE"

Well, it isn't the message. no matter where u Tweet or
how many u "Friend" the SCREWED up message remains
unacceptable to the majority of American people.

Your agenda is too (TOO) far LEFT.

Even if u succeed to bankrupt this country,
we will remove u, u will go down in HISTORY AS THE WORST ADMINISTRATION IN HISTORY & we'll pick up the pieces & never look at another Left Fringer in Politics until the end of time.
What a tragic chapter in History you have written.

Twitter is for small minded GOP'ers who can only speak in 3 word "twitteresque" sentences. Gibbs and company should grow some balls and start using some of the power they were given when elected by a 60% + majority. Just run right over the "Party of NO". Bunch of milquetoasts they have become.

Why are these people a "group of clowns?" I read comments like this and wonder what I'm not seeing. They seem like a perfectly competent group of people to me, who are trying to run this country under very difficult circumstances. Please answer with specifics of why you think they're "clowns" and what you think they should be doing differently.

This is a great opportunity for the President and his people to send Unfiltered information to the general public about the issues that really matter. TV Media is already too controlled by certain interest groups.

I do not care what Sarah hides in her hand, I want to know what The President has in is mind.

This "group of clowns" are a lot better than the fleabag circus of the last administration that allowed us to get into our current economic situation, which the current administration now has to clean up. And because it took two failed terms in office for Bush to screw everything up, you people are putting it on Obama just because its taking more than one year to correct the mistakes of the previous eight.

So don't be a sore loser because your sorry John McCain and his Joke of a running mate Sarah Palin wasn't elected to continue Bush's rein of error.

    "Technology helps GOP seize..."
However Senator Scott Brown's campaign may or may not have been aided by its chosen tools, so far he appears to be a fine choice for his party's presidential race in 2012: FRESH, young, vital, and Republican with NO BAGGAGE.

This will be a very easy job if Gibbs is reporting the accomplishments of his boss,Obama. Thus far all he would need to tweet isTHE PRESIDENT HAS PICKED OUT A DOG FOR HIS FAMILY.And thats all folks.

The Obama White House is clever to communicate by Twitter. Most of their young support base could not comprehend a Henry James sentence.
America has tried President Obama's agenda for change, and most of us didn't like it. It's time to get back to basics.

Breaking News-Obozo administration press secretary successfully joins twitter. This marks the first successful accomplishment of Obozos administration. Will Rahm "deadfish" Emanuel successfully join facebook? Stay Tuned.
Oh, and on a sidenote the economy is in shambles, unemployment is terrible, Iran is about to get a nuke and we are forever in debt to China. But hey, Gibbs joined twitter. Congrats

wow, since you can't articulate your position so people know exactly what you mean you turn to something limiting you to a few lines. that should make it easier to spin. gibbs is a tool. really, he is. a tool for the administration to spin and confuse everything they say. i figured when obama won he'd at least do what he said about civility, transparency and respect, bring some pride to the black community and maybe get the rest of the world to relaxe on the U.S. bashing but he's done absolutely nothing. in fact, things are probably worse. and that's saying something.
