Washington (CNN) – Former Sen. Bob Dole is recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center after knee surgery and a bout with pneumonia, his consulting firm said Monday.
"Thanks to the great doctors and nurses at Walter Reed, I am making great strides, working between sessions and hope to be fully recovered and back at the office in a few weeks," the former senate majority leader said in a statement through Alston & Bird, the Washington firm where he serves as special counsel.
Dole, 86, is a World War II veteran who overcame serious injuries to pursue a lengthy career in politics. He was the Republican Party's presidential nominee in 1996, but lost to Bill Clinton.
He retired from office that year after serving in the Senate for more than 25 years.
To the honorable Senator Bob Dole, wishing you a speedy recovery and our thoughts and prayers are with you. Get well soon. We love you.
Sorry to hear that you are down. But glad to hear you 'll be out soon and back to work. Now days, they do so much medically. The say you can't
keep a good man down and I believe it. Get well and good luck in the
future.
Bob Dole is a good man who spends his time improving the lives of veterans. My father is a WWII vet who recently went for a flight to Washington DC where they spent the day touring memorials. Senator Dole was there to meet them, as he is with so many vets who get to enjoy the program, and his presence was meaningful for my 87 year old dad.
Thanks Senator Dole for all you do and Get Well Soon.
Get well Mr. Dole.
Mr. Dole was a true Senator who truly cared about the country. Mr. Dole practiced Bipartisianship.
I wish both Mr. Dole and Mr. Cheney a speedy recovery. It is wonderful for them that they can receive such fine care free of the financial worry that goes with it for millions of their countrymen.
All best wishes to Former Senator Dole in his recovery!
He is an heroic veteran–of a war when the goal was Winning the war, which we did–and a powerful force in American politics.
