Ex-Obama adviser: Democrats may get 'slaughtered' in election

Washington (CNN) - Steve Hildebrand, one of the top advisers who helped put President Obama in office, has a stark warning for his old friends at the White House and on Capitol Hill.

"I think that there is a real shot we [Democrats] are going to get slaughtered in elections this fall if we aren't leading the efforts to reform Washington," Hildebrand said. "We campaigned in '06 and '08, and if voters don't see that change, we haven't lived up to that promise."

Hildebrand, a highly regarded strategist in Democratic circles who helped deliver the crucial state of Iowa for Obama, is an outside consultant pushing issues such as campaign finance and lobbying reform.

He came to the White House on Wednesday for a quiet meeting with the president's senior adviser, David Axelrod, to express a fear that Republicans are seizing the high ground on cleaning up Washington, on issues such as the ethics probe of Rep. Charlie Rangel, D-New York.

I hope the President and his White House advisers pay close attention to Hildebrand. As a former member of the DNC, a long time political junkie and a passionate supporter of what I thought Barack Obama and the Democrats wanted to accomplish it is way past time to provide real leadership. People like me who really care are dropping away. What a relief to find that someone like Hildebrand was willing to be out front.

Obama and his administration is as corrupt as any other to come thru the WH. Look to the people he surrounds himself with, look to his lack of transperancy, look to his buying votes with taxdollars, look to the debt he has incurred which has not helped out economy and look to the unemployment which may have slowed down but then, businesses that still exist are running on skeleton staff.. He has sold this nation and I pray the dems continue to self distruct and this country can regain its dignity and respect as a nation of hard workers....not people who only look to a government for entitlements! This administration continues to lie to the public and being the eloquent speaker he is, there are those who believe and blindly follow. Please, please wake up and use some common sense!

Republicans are great at all sticking with one message, no matter how bad it is for America. Say it enough times and it sticks. Democrats are great at bickering over the small stuff, in public, which unfortunately the average American could care less about. If the Democrats could only seize the moment and lead in lock-step, they would walk all over the Republicans this fall.

All I have to say is that if the American people are dumb enough to put the Republicans back into office then we deserve what we get.

Holy cow, we have found one smart Dem. At least he understands what the people want. Of course, he probably doesn't understand we don't want healthcare reform as it is now proposed.

As long as the Democrats continue to arrogantly believe that the American people are just too stupid to understand the great things that the Democrats want to do for them and that those ends justify the sleezy means they use, they wil be like lemmings marching off a cliff in November.

(I was going to compare the Democrats to fast talking used car salesmen or ambulance chasing personal injury lawyers but felt that would be unfair to those groups.)

this dude is utterly and totally wrong....once this health care reform is passed, Democrats will be treated as Gods, and win.....ok...writer is a very highly educated one. This is truth. Nation's need is Health care reform. Fix prices of Doctors and Optametrists too....if needed we need to hire more PAs (Physician Assistants). They are the best doctors, and in fact my doctor is a PA, a wonderful doctor....truth...pass this health care first and talk...

I would say its a fore gone conclusion at this point. All damage control and limiting the number of lost seats from this point on. They better hold off on a health care vote in its current state or it will be a slaughter fest.

Imagine that! If you promise the people fair and open government, transparency, no lobbyists running things, higher ethics, an end to earmarks, fiscal responsibility, etc. and you don't deliver, you might be voted out of office. What an unusual idea.

I have to agree. I supported Obama. When I look at the advantages he (and congress) had, and what he has actually accomplished, I am sorely disappointed. Obama has turned out to be a timid leader at best, with good intentions and not one ounce of backbone.

I was so hoping America would have a chance to progress (hell, after Bush, why not say "evolve"), but it looks like educated, forward thinking independents misplaced their vote.

Hilary, any chance you might forgive us?

Mr. President, as one of your strongest supporters, may I respectively ask you to pull your head out of its current location? America needs you and you are dropping the ball. Big time. Congress? The Democratic leadership on both sides is nothing less than pathetic. Don't you think it might be wise to support your president instead of stabbing him in the back?

Democrats, we deserve a royal pounding in the mid-terms.

Mr. Hildebrand, the voice of reason, yet will the Obama administration listen, NO! Obama should be concentrating on job growth, tax cuts and less spending. No, Obama takes to the road to push Health-care, which will increase taxes, increase spending and it will take many many years to see job growth. 2-4 years for nurses and other medical help, 12 -14 years for doctors. Those who rally for health-care are union members (SEIU) and ACRON member, or what every they are calling themselves now. These made up Obama grass roots.

If the Democrats get slaughtered next election, and I don't think they will, it will be a sign of the ignorance of the American voter. Here we have a party working for the benefit of the people while the republicans are out for corporations, insurance comapanies the military and, thanks to the Supreme Corut ruling of the Robert's Court, to allow corporations both foreign and domestic to buy the next election!. Plus every election there on!

Unfortunately, it is not what you do but what is reported on cable news and talk radio. The Dems have actually accomplished much, saved the world from a world wide depression, put a plan in effect to end 2 wars, have a plan to start health care reform, changed our image in the world, protected our freedom as gauranteed by our constitution but ignored by Bush administration, ended torture as a policy, started to enforce environmental laws etc.
Its time for mainstream media to start carrying important stories and forget the sensationalism of sex stories.

This is the number one problem with Special Advisors like Hildebrand . . . they are so MYOPIC in their view.

Democrats are definitely going to get their wings clipped in November, but so are the Republicans.

When are these people going to understand the American public is sick and tired of both parties’ antics?

Neither is working for the American people in general and both adhere to Special Interest Groups.

It’s not the American system of government that is broken, but the people in it.

The dumbocraps and Obummie will be slaughtered at the polls because they have not LISTENED to the people. As I type this, the morons are meeting behind closed doors to cram the health care bill down our throat. They have wasted over a year, while we are bleeding jobs. Their only answer is to spend money for grossly inefficient government programs which is further burying this country.

Democrats have become very conservative and are unwilling to change.

The question is, will the voter vote Republicans who call themselves conservative and involve themselves in sexual scandals like Mr. Sanford, or will they vote Democrats who call themselves progressive but are unwilling to change.
