Pelosi: No separate abortion vote on health care

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said there would be no separate vote on restricting taxpayer funding for abortion.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said there would be no separate vote on restricting taxpayer funding for abortion.

Washington (CNN) - Just a day before the health care bill was expected to go up for a House vote, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Saturday there would
be no separate vote on restricting taxpayer funding for abortion.

"Not on abortion, not on abortion, not on public option, not on single payer, not on anything," Pelosi told CNN.

The speaker was responding to a question about a request by Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Michigan, for the House to vote on his language restricting taxpayer funding for abortion.

Stupak postponed a news conference Saturday, and did not immediately comment on the issue.

On Friday, he told CNN he was in talks with Pelosi, D-California.

"We had a good discussion with the speaker on the floor," said Stupak.

"But there was no agreement and there's no agreement until we see it in writing and we get a chance to massage it."

His call for a vote was staunchly opposed by a group of female abortion-rights Democrats who also met with Pelosi on Friday.

Reps. Lynn Woolsey, D-California, and Donna Edwards, D-Maryland, on Saturday said there would be no deal on Stupak's request, adding that they would bolt from the bill if such language were tied to it.

A senior Democratic source told CNN that party leaders are suggesting to Stupak that another option would be for the president to sign an executive order that would restate the long-standing ban on public funding for abortion.

When asked by a reporters whether such an order would mollify anti-abortion Democrats, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer responded, "I'm hopeful."

She got more testosterone than all the scared House Republicans that are too afraid to buck their party; and more steel spine than all the House Democrats that are too weak to stand up for 35-million hardworking middle-class Americans.

No matter what happens Stupak will be the biggest looser. He tried to stretch his "15 min" a little to long and the people of Mich and those fighting for health care will not forget during his re-election. I'll make a contribution to whichever Dem that runs against him...

This is just the tip of the iceberg. They were never serious about cutting monies going to abortion through the government. This bill to be passed is like telling people they need to continue to drive their Toyota and don't worry about a little problem it has. It won't kill you! Yes, we need better health care plan, but why is it that democrats are the only ones that are allowed to decide. In a multitude of counselors their is wisdom. If this doesn't pass somehow, I hope they will still work out something and get more fedback from doctors, business, and the people!

I am/was an obama supporter but Pelosi is making me regret my decision with each passing day. This woman has got to go. She's a snake in the grass with a personal agenda that will be the downfall of the democratic party for the next 3-8 years. I thought Bush was stubborn.. this lady is writing a whole new book.

  6. Peolsi we love you

We love you for everything you are, a stinking socialist liberal that is tearing the Democratic Party apart, consistently demonstrating that you want the Congress to become an extension of the White House, part of massive federal entitlement based nation, where everyone is equally poor with the exception of the ruling elitists.

Keep it up Nancy, we love you, you dirty Marxist.

America deserves a simple Up or Down vote on the Health Care Bill. None of this side votes to muddy the decision.

I hope the House passes the bill on Sunday.

As for Bart Stupak, he can go back to the conservatives in the C Street House and tell them he failed!

I am with Pelosi on this one!

Just like Obama & his ilk – LIARS. Remember when Joe Wilson said "you lie" during 1 of Obama's speeches? Well, he was correct – the Obama regime is going to force you to have health care, whether you want it or not, they're going to force you to pay for abortions, whether you want to or not.

For crying out loud, CNN. At least get the quote right. What she said was:

"Not on abortion, not on public option, not on single payer, not on anything," Pelosi said.

Its a shame this bill cannot just be about health care for Americans that need it and for Americans like me that have it but would some regulations that stop them from sticking it to me every chance or anytime they want to. When I hear that the Nuns are for this bill and say they have read it and it does not does not provide any goverment funding of abortion then I am more incline to believe them than someone thats against it for party or political reasons.

To all Democrat House Members: Your vote in favor of this attrocity is a vote FOR; Taxpayer-funded abortion, trashing the American Constitition, Sleazy backroom bribes, higher taxes, 500 Billion-dollar cut in Medicare, rationed care, major Government expansion and Socialism. YOU will rue the day if this passes and the American People will make sure you are unemployed at the next election. That's a solemn promise!!!

Good! this is not about abortion, this is about real people dying for lack of insurance and real people losing their insurance when they get sick. bart stupid needs to shut up and go away and stop trying to save imaginary people at the cost of thousands of real lives a year. women's rights are already compromised enough, they don't need any more hoops to jump thru to try to obtain necessary, LEGAL health procedures. keep up the good work Nancy! we're depending on you to get this done.

Nancy Pelosi is the poorest excuse for a House Speaker in memory. She absolutely has no common sense and no desire to work for us common people. Every time she opens her mouth it seems she's making some absurd, stupid comment that only goes to P*^&* off the American people! I'll be very happy when she's GONE!

The Republicans should get down on their knees and thank God that Nancy Pelosi is Speaker of the House. She, more than anyone, will ensure the Health Bill is defeated and that a GOP takeover of the House will occur come November.

Hopefully the Republicans will elect someone other than that loser John Boehner to replace her.

One person can hold up the vote for a healthcare bill that will help women and children just because of a couple of cells that could possibly be destroyed.

It's unfortunate that live children aren't worth anything to him.

This is now the government will be paying for anyone who chooses not to use birth control. I'm against abortion but I'm really against paying for other peoples bad choices.

I could not be any stronger in my support of any woman's right to have an abortion whenever she wants it.
I also could not be any stronger in my opposition to the government's requiring that I pay for any woman's abortion unless I am the father of the troublesome fetus.
I don't want to pay for your Valium and annual physical examinations either.
