Stupak award rescinded

[cnn-photo-caption image= caption="In a press conference Sunday, Rep. Bart Stupak explained his decision to reach a deal with President Obama that involves Obama issuing an executive order about abortion funding."]
Washington (CNN) – An anti-abortion rights organization is withdrawing an award it planned to present Rep. Bart Stupak, after the Michigan Democrat announced Sunday he would support health care reform legislation.

The Susan B. Anthony List had chosen Stupak to receive the “Defender of Life” award at the “Campaign for Life Gala” Wednesday here in the nation’s capital. Stupak and several Democrats said that they would vote for the health care bill after President Obama assured them that no federal funding would be allowed to pay for abortion. Obama released an executive order that emphasized abortions would not be paid for with federal dollars.

“By accepting this deal from the most pro-abortion President in American history, Stupak has not only failed to stand strong for unborn children, but also for his constituents and pro-life voters across the country,” Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, said in a statement shortly before the House was set to vote on the controversial bill.

Dannenfelser charged that the executive order was not enough.

"The executive order on abortion funding does absolutely nothing to fix the problems presented by the health care reform bill that the House will vote on this evening,” she said. “The very idea should offend all pro-life Members of Congress. An executive order can be rescinded at any time at the President's whim, and the courts could and have a history of trumping executive orders. Most importantly, pro-abortion Representatives have admitted the executive order is meaningless."

Updated: 11:28 p.m.: Rep. Stupak spoke with CNN Sunday night about the decision of the Susan B. Anthony List. "I didn't seek the award," Stupak told CNN, "I stood on my principle. I don't need an award."

If you're anti-health, how can you pretend to be pro-life?

Dear Hon.Stupak. Don't worry, the vote you give to the american people is more important than the paper you receive from the anti abortion. You can't win them all but this vote is the most important you have done to the american people. May the best of luck go to you.

The hypocricy of these people knows no end.

More than 40,000 Americans, living human beings, die annually as a result of not having medical insurance. But, in the consideration of these groups, it is better to have the Americans die at the altar of some fetus somehere. Craven immorality!

Exactly how does this "cost" Stupak? The GOP could put the most vile person in politics up (somebody like, say, Newt Gingrich), and the fringers would push for him anyway.

    Indian givers.

He has no abortion providers in his district. over 85% of the counties have no abortion facilities, that's what over a third of the women in this country, what else do they want?

Just how stupid are these people? Pro-life, never mind. Can't have more than one idea in their head at a time...

"if you're not with us, you're against us"- exactly the kind of mentality that is NOT going to help bring our country out of the economic pits

He doesn;t need their award. Not that his decision was manipulative. Full of strings. Until he gets pregnant, he should have no say in this particular matter.

Thanks Mr. Stupak, I now have 2 things completely straight in my mind now -

    1) I will be sending campaign funds to your opponent in the next election and will encourage all my family and friends to do so as well.

    2) I know now that it doesn't matter that you've spent 30 years protecting against abortion rights, you have now just lost all credibility for the rest of your life!

Have a nice day and be looking for a job soon!

This reminds me of the movie Remember the Titans when the assistant coach played by Will Patton was going to be elected into the local sports Hall of Fame. In their playoff game the refs were clearly calling the game so the Titans would lose. Finally the coach called time out and told the ref he sees what they are doing and is going to call them all out. The ref said your funeral and then called the game fairly. The Titans won and after the game the coach was told he wasn't going to be elected. He didn't care.

I think Stupak feels the same way.

Congressman Stupak caved and betrayed his supposed principals! He knows full well that the executive order isn't worth the paper and the ink Obama used to sign it. It would be interesting to know exactly what he received as his 13 pieces of silver. There were no NO votes from Democrats tonight. There may have been a few given permission to vote NO....but all their votes were bought by Obama and Pelosi. We've never seen such corruption in our lifetimes. However, elections have consequences....this massive corruption against the will of the American people is the consequence of giving total control of our Government to Obama, Pelosi, and Reid! Nov is the next election. It may be our last opportunity to restore balance to our Government. The well being of our nation hangs in the balance!!!

Susan B. Anthony was an Athiest? Why would a pro-life group name themselves after her? The vast majority of pro-lifers are nutty right wing religious fanatics.

Either get enough Justices to overturn Roe v. Wade or get enough Congressmen and a President willing to amend the Constitution or be quiet. The anti-abortion language in the Bill is sufficient as it is, and the Executive Order adds another layer of protection. Outside of overturning Roe v. Wade or a constitutional amendment this is the best you are going to get. You would do better to spend your time and money trying to help women who are experiencing crisis pregnancies instead of threatening elected officials with "taking away their award".
