Rep. Randy Neugebauer said he shouted out "'it's a baby killer' in reference to the agreement reached by the Democratic leadership" on compromise language that emphasized federal funds would not be used to pay for abortions.
Michigan Rep. Bart Stupak was on the House floor talking about the issue at the time of Neugebauer's outburst. Stupak was the leader of a group of anti-abortion rights Democrats who refused to back health care reform unless their concerns were addressed.
In a statement released by his office, Neugerbauer said that his comments have been misconstrued.
"Last night was the climax of weeks and months of debate on a health care bill that my constituents fear and do not support," he said. "In the heat and emotion of the debate, I exclaimed the phrase 'it's a baby killer' in reference to the agreement reached by the Democratic leadership. While I remain heartbroken over the passage of this bill and the tragic consequences it will have for the unborn, I deeply regret that my actions were mistakenly interpreted as a direct reference to Congressman Stupak himself.
"I have apologized to Mr. Stupak and also apologize to my colleagues for the manner in which I expressed my disappointment about the bill. The House Chamber is a place of decorum and respect. The timing and tone of my comment last night was inappropriate."

I guess the right will be making him a hero too over the next few days, just as they did with Joe Wilson.
At least Joe Wilson owned up to what he said , this guy is nothing but a coward
Maybe your constituents are in fear of this Health Care bill because you filled them up with “Death Panel” “Government Take over of HC” Communism and every sleazy lie to do nothing but scare good Americans. You hide the facts from good Americans. You should be ashamed. You did your constituents a disservice. You should now retire.
"comments were misconstrued? ..." Now you're even lying...
You are sinking to new lows, Republicans. It never ceases to amaze me.
President Obama appeals to the better nature of Americans, you converge on the lowest common denominator: fear, racism, incoherent anger. You want to live in segerated world from 150 years ago.
So go back to your caves where you belong.
Yes folks, another knuckle scraping Neanderthal brought to you by the great state of Texas. Boy these members of the Flat Earth Society make me so proud. Makes me want to host a book burning, then we can all go out and beat the crap out of anyone that does not agree with our in-bred dogma.
Iffin' yall got two brain cells to rub togetter, you just best stay outta Texas. We don't need your kind here.
Misconstrued? No the purpose of this crap is perfectly clear. Shout out a popular line aimed at your conservative base back home and you get free publicity. All the corporate money in the world does not buy publicity like this. They apologize all the way to the suck-up bank.
He's an idiot plain and simple.
Please don't misconstrue what I am saying here.
It is absolutely no surprise nor any shock to find a representative from the State of Texas that was shouting 'Baby Killer' in the Congressional Chamber.
I heard a rumor that the Tea Party and Republican members are planning on burning some crosses in their respective States to recruit more members during the upcoming Congressional recess.
Minority leader Boehner promised Republican Armageddon on America over the White House obtaining the first significant health care legislation in the past 50 years and the largest deficit reduction bill ever passed by Congress.
It appears the Republican Party has been totally defeated, unable to even string accurate sentences together, and are now simply mouthing snippets of psycho-babble.
I'm so embarrassed to be represented by a man who can not use polite, civil language to discuss a heated topic. Additionally, I'd love to see such passion about those children who are born into families who struggle with: poverty, domestic violence, teen-age mothers, divorce, food-needy situations to have politicians who not only fight for their births but then provide for their lives – so that they might be valued as a single light on this earth.
Stop whining. Yall won the game.
Iguess they did it again, as last time when the other Republican was disrespectful to Mr. Obama by calling him liar", then say sorry which I don't believe he really mean it. I don't think that they really deserve to represent any American, this kind of congresman are the ones that are embarrasing the USA politics.
Typical Republican..just like his fellow Republican who shopped out.."you lie" Decorum and respect is what that party lacks.
Texas Republicans never cease to amaze me.
Texas Republican Randy Neugebauer is typical of repugnant republicans disrespect for anyone who does not toe their goose-stepping fascist line. Hey Randy, face up to it, you're just another bully.
Oh, well, in that case...
First of, it's not "Democratic leadership" it's "Democrat leadership".
Secondly, sacrificing babies for the passage of this bill is beyond the pale; I don't know how these Democrats can look themselves in teh mirror when they fail the most basic test of morality.
These guys have to know that they harm themselves and their own agenda when they do this. Independent voters do not like to hear their congressional representatives behave like this.
Another Republican with his foot in his big fat mouth
It is nice to see people voted in office resorting to kindergarten tactics when they don't get their way. I don't know enough specifics about the healthcare bill to support it 100% or not support it 100% but I do know that the respect is gone from politics when 60/70/80 yr. old men result to blurting out comments like this or "you lie" in the middle of debates. I know if I acted like this at work I would be fired so it would be nice to see these uncontrollable characters meet the same fate.
Concerned in Louisville.
that man should go to prison
Im still trying to find where the health care bill allows more freedom for abortions. Didnt the President sign an executive order that did not change the way abortions are paid for? This is just another example of how the truth is distorted to gain support from other people.
Randy Neugebauer at least had the courage to do or to say what he felt in public and not behind closed door sessions. The Democrats were the first to show disrespect during the Senate Debate.
In my judgment, anything has gone down in the Congress-shady deals–to Stupak looking Stupid-so the disrespect between colleagues began within the Senate when Sen John McCain was speaking out against the health care reform as it was submitted.
So–Stupak–looked Stupid-
and Randy Neugebauer had strong feelings and it is a free society–if the Democrats hadn't been the first one on the Senate floor to show disrespect–then Randy would and should apologized-
NOW ANYTHING GOES!
The thought of anyone being able to kill another human being so that they do not stand in the way of a career or education is sick, evil and borders on the insane.
I don't think you can mistakenly interpret "baby killer", it seems pretty straightforward.
I'm surprised nobody shouted "bomb" or "fire" to derail this vote. Embrace change people, it's a sign of progress. There is still hope for us.
you have been killing americans for years now!!! now you care about the unborn ones but not the americans already born???? how does this make any sense??????
