Reid touts NRA tie, reaches out to activists as Tea Partiers rally

Searchlight, Nevada (CNN) - As thousands of Tea Party activists rally in his hometown of Searchlight, Nevada, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is burnishing his Second Amendment credentials.

Reid’s re-election campaign describes National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre as "one of the senator’s supporters." The two are at a $60 million Clark County shooting park which, according to the Reid campaign, wouldn't have opened without the senator’s help.

In a statement to CNN regarding Saturday’s Tea Party rally in his hometown, the Senate’s top Democrat said: "I'm happy so many people came to see my hometown of Searchlight and spend their out-of-state money especially in these tough economic times. Ultimately though this election will be decided by Nevadans, not people from other states who parachute in for one day to have a tea party."

Reid’s camp is trying to welcome the Tea Partiers. The Nevada State Democratic Party and the Reid campaign have set up a hospitality tent not far from the Tea Party rally site. "We are serving Tea and donut holes in recognition that Senator Reid just passed health care reform and we're closing the Medicare donut hole," says Zac Petkanas, deputy communications director of the Reid campaign. He adds it’s staffed, "with real Nevadans from Nevada and folks from Searchlight who support Reid."

The Nevada Democrats hold their big Jefferson Jackson dinner Saturday night where former Vice President Al Gore will be the keynote speaker.

Harry Reid welcomes the Tea Party in the same way that a condemned man welcomes his last meal.

There is no co-opting a group of people who are outraged at what you've done over the last 6 years Senator. I look forward to November. After, you'll have a lot of time to go target shooting with whomever you choose.

    You are done.

How are the Tea Partiers going to FORCE everyone to vote against Mr. Reid? These people are clearly out of hand, clearly. The voters put the Democrats in charge, it was truly our decision. I am assuming that the Tea Party is now going to become like Russia and TELL us who to vote for, eh comrades? I will be voting Democratic again – unless the Tea Party forces me to do otherwise. I believe that this is still a free country. I mean, the Republican base was energized and President Obama STILL won. How do you explain that?

welldone Sen. Reid and the NRA.....local people are the ones that elect officials, not the disconnected, meaningless, insignificant sub humans who flock from town to town for a meager buck, BUT WITH THE SOCIAL SECURITY checks, MEDICARE and MEDICAID assistance as well as protection from the police ALL SOCIALIST PROGRAMS.

Those pee baggers with the genetic contamination from lower life forms would do a great favor to the country by joining the hag from alaska on the TLC chanel, which, by the way stands for THE LEARNING CHANEL.....that way children and adults willing to get an EDUCATION can go to schools and become good citizens not the ignorance that these twisted mindless show everywhere they go

Thank You Senator Reid for all your hard work for the American People and your fight against Insurance and their foot soldiers (Sarah Palin and the Tea Partier's). My question to them is what's in the tea? What is in there that you would make you want to teach your children hate? Not only teach them hate, but how to bestow it onto other's! (Republican's, almost all Republican's are doing this)

    I will have coffee please.
