Teenager takes Biden to task over cuss word

(CNN) - A 17-year-old student from South Pasadena High School in California took Vice President Joe Biden to task Friday for his use of an un-choice word this week whispered into the ear of President Barack Obama.

"This is a huge deal," McKay Hatch told reporters. "Many kids and adults all over the world look up to Vice President Biden as a role model. He needs to be a good role model for kids and use clean and appropriate language."

Hatch was referring to Biden's "This is a big f............ deal" sotto-voce remark Tuesday to his boss during the signing of the health care bill that was picked up by microphones and amplified around the world.

Hatch called on Biden to apologize, then packed a "No Cussing Club" T-shirt, wrist bands and penalty jar into a box and carried it to the local post office, cameras documenting his every move and utterance. His goal: "to remind him to use good language."

Hatch said he was not opposed to Biden exercising his First Amendment rights. "He has the freedom of speech to say what he wants, but he can't choose the consequences of what he says," the student said. "We need as a country to get back to the basic values and come together and treat people with civility."

Hatch acknowledged that even he is not perfect. "I'm just trying to ask him, you know, think about what you're saying next time. This is about self-control. He's doing a good job; I'm just asking him, you know, try a
little harder."

Hatch's Web site,, claims more than 35,000 members and lists his more than 100 appearances on local and national television programs.

It also sells his book "The No-Cussing Club" ($19.95 + $5.50 postage and handling) and his DVD "The Story of the No-Cussing Club ($29.95 +$6 postage and handling) for sale.

Since when does a mormon kid with a naive view of the world get press space in CNN?

Oh I know why, 'cause CNN is shilling for the Republicans.

May be that I am just old-fashioned. Find this offensive and disrespectful. Guess it just shows, from the comments, that it is "okay" to use such vulgar language in today's society. Have 4 sons, youngest is 38, and never would they ever use such language in my presence. Biden should use the same decorum in front of America.

Joe Biden is a 70 year-old who miscalculated his whisper – cut the old guy some slack!

Besides, Joe Biden accidentally cussed at an adult event – it's not like he cussed on Sesame Street.

You tell 'em Hatch. Cussing shows a person's immaturity, not only of emotion, but of speech. Biden took what he thought was a monumentous ocassion before the country and turned it into a guy's locker room. He sounded unprofessional, unwise, and even President Obama's face showed the embarrassment of the moment. We need to raise our standards people, and get our mouths out of the gutter. And while that example should start with the adults, in this case the wisdom and example comes from the mouths of teens. Sweet. Take a lesson, Mr. Vice-President.

The kid needs to enlist in the US military and learn some good old salty language used by drill instructors. He will find out quickly there are tougher lessons in life than a few overused expletives.

This kid needs to wake up and smell the coffee.

There are far worse and far more prolific segments of our society using foul language. Such as music and entertainment industries. Or the very real and constant use of negative language against minorities of color/race and homosexuals as well.

Personally I think he did this as a publicity stunt. He felt THAT passionately about language he should be putting his efforts and time into some of the areas mentioned above.

Another example of the disillusioned youth of society perhaps.

I can't believe the comments on here. Instead of praising this teen for standing up for a good thing, people are condemning him. Those who need to get a life are the ones on this board who can't see we need to set better examples for our children. Would you rather this kid was out tagging in your neighborhood?

Despite all the problems in the world, this kid acts on... this? This is either a bad joke, or cruelly misinformed child. And the fact that it makes the news on CNN tells a lot about this country's mentality...

i agree that bidens comment was made iin what he thought was a private arena, and should not have been made public. this being said however, it brings to bear the fact that such foul language has intruded into every day life. as for myself, when folks use this type of language, it shows a total ack of respect for those around them. if one cannot think of any other word to use in a given situation, then it is a pity.

i have decided that it should be no more offensive to pass gas close to folks that use that language. so now, when i hear someone use that language in front i women and children, i simply saunter over, smile, and let one go!

I doubt he is a role model to anyone. He and Obama are expected to set an example as the leaders of this country (God help us), and I hope that people are taking notes. I would kick both of them out of office ASAP in the next election. The problem is, who is going to demonstrate the leadership ability that we really need? We have a bunch of clowns in the White House. No one takes the job seriously.
