"To set America on a path to energy independence, the President believes we must leverage our diverse domestic resources by pursuing a comprehensive energy strategy," said a statement provided by an administration official who did not want to comment on the record ahead of the president's announcement.
"The President will announce today additional measures that will boost domestic energy production and promote clean energy innovation," the statement said.
The GOP has long championed additional domestic drilling to lessen America's dependence on outside energy sources. The administration's plan could help win Republican support for other White House initiatives, although it won't find many fans among environmentalists.
The president will introduce the measures during an address at Joint Base Andrews Naval Air Facility Washington late Wednesday morning. He will be joined at the event by the secretaries of the Interior, Energy and Navy, as well as the chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality.
The administration proposal would include lifting a 20-year ban on drilling off the Virginia coastline, while putting the clamps on sites that had been approved off the coast of Alaska.
The plan also would authorize the interior department to conduct seismic surveys off the south- and mid-Atlantic coasts to "determine the quantity and location of potential oil and gas resources to support energy planning."
The expanded offshore drilling is part of a larger effort by the White House to promote energy independence.
On Thursday, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation will sign an agreement establishing fuel economy standards for cars and trucks for model years 2012-2016.
"We are implementing policies that will greatly reduce our dependence on foreign oil," the official said, noting the White House is "leading by example" and will announce the purchase of 5,000 hybrid vehicles for the federal fleet.

Lets see the republicans squirm out of this one. they have been hollering drill, drill drill. odds are they will find an excuse to vote against this too. expecially after john mccain said they would vote against any thing that the democrats propposed.
What we need is to find alternate sources of energy and slowly end our dependance on oil once and for all. By funneling all this money to the arab world we are funding our own demise. Also don't think that all this oil off the shore will be going to Americans. It will be sold on the open market like any other oil and all that will happen is OPEC will reduce their output so we are putting our shores in jeopardy for no reason.
I can hear the little morons on the right now saying,im against it now that its his idea.hahaha
This is a great move. If President Obama promotes more US drilling in addition to alternative sources, he may turn out to be more reasonable than he appeared his first year. Every dollar we drill is one less that goes to the middle east. That helps our GDP, that helps our job situation, that helps our energy independence and our balance of trade....win win win....I say...drill drill drill (and conserve, lol).
Ohhhh, here's proof that he's a crazy, far-left liberal.....
Excellent news!
Wow, I wonder what the party of NO wil do with this!
About time!
What? Drill, Baby, Drill???
