Obama brushes off Palin on nuclear deal

(CNN) - President Obama on Friday brushed off criticism from Sarah Palin that his agreement with Russia to restrict the use of nuclear weapons amounts to a dangerous sign of weakness.

"I really have no response," the president said tersely in an interview on ABC's Good Morning America. "Because last I checked, Sarah Palin's not much of an expert on nuclear issues."

Speaking on Fox News earlier this week, Palin said the recently negotiated treaty with Russia - seeking a reduction in the number of nuclear weapons held by the two countries - is an "unbelievable" move and that "no administration in America's history I think would ever have considered such a step."

"It's kinda like getting out in the playground, a bunch of kids ready to fight, and one of the kids saying 'go ahead, punch me in the face, I am not going to retaliate, go ahead and do what you want to with me,'" Palin said.

Obama said Friday: "I would say to them is that if the secretary of defense and the chairman of the Joints Chiefs of Staff are comfortable with it, I'm probably going to take my advice from them and not from Sarah Palin."

The treaty requires approval from two-thirds of the Senate to go into effect. Some of the chamber's Republicans, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, have indicated that they are not ready to support the deal.

"The Senate will assess whether or not the agreement is verifiable, whether it reduces our nation's ability to defend itself and our allies from the threat of nuclear armed missiles, and whether or not this administration is committed to preserving our own nuclear triad," McConnell said in a statement.

"Getting ready to fight" says Palin? She is sick and should get help. The reason for this arms agreement is that nuclear weapons don't make us safer. They put all of us at risk of annihilation within minutes. For Palin to not understand this and then stoke up her opposition accordingly would be silliness if it weren't extremely dangerous.

With this arms control treaty, Obama is doing what every Republican administration claimed they wanted to do, not the least of which was Reagan, still a Republican icon last time I checked. Like everything else Obama has done as president, this is basically conservative and hardly radical as Gingrich and Palin would lie to have you believe. They are playing with fire.

Does she know that Ronald Reagan Called for us never to stop striving of a Nuclear free world and that Ronald Reagan called for us to reach a treaty with Russia reducing our Nuclear weapons by 33%? Bush-Clinton-Bush... never carried Ronald Reagan's Torch and legacy and made it so... Obama just did.

    Thank You Obama.

Didn't Ms. Palin's patron saint, St. Ronald of Reagan, abhor nuclear weapons?

Just another instance of criticizing everything while contributing nothing of substance.

And you are an expert President Obama? Really, doesn't anyone see the irony in that statement. I do agree he has people to help him understand but who and what do they have vested?

Sarah Palin is not much of an expert on anything except making remarks about many things she knows nothing about. I admire American women whom make their way in politics on brains and knowledge. She is a quitter, a loser and a limelight lover. Beauty is only skin deep but ugly goes clear to the bone

"Because last I checked, Sarah Palin's not much of an expert on nuclear issues."

Burn! Oh, but she can see Russia from her house and was "Commader in Chief" of the Alaska National Guard in case Putin "reared his head." Laughable. LOL. Seriously...since when did any retard's uninformed and baseless opinion need to get airtime just because he or she is a celebrity? Obama could have obtained a treaty from Russia promising to destroy all Russian nukes and allow the US to place nuclear armed bases in Moscow and the right wing lunatic fringe, led by this tapdancing Palin clown, would have proclaimed from the rooftops that it was a "dangerous sign of weakness." Just goes to show how much discretion the "news" media uses in determining what is actually credible, viable, informed opinion worthy broadcasting. Instead of journalism, we get the equivalent of he-said-she-said gossip. Kudos.

And for any of you whining pantwetting conservatives out there who spout your knee-jerk "liberal media conspiracy" nonsense all the time, keep this in mind...or try...in whatever passes as a mind for you people. The so-called "liberal media" just did you another gigantic favor by uncritically plastering Palin's utterly untenable criticism all over the intertubes without a single shred of analysis or thought to accompany it...as though it has merit sufficient to require discussion, which it very clearly does not...just liek hey do with her "death panels" blather.

Last night I saw a TV clip in which President Reagan espoused *exactly* the same goals for nuclear weapons reduction that President Obama just agreed to. Palin is either that misinformed or is spreading deliberate misinformation. Both are scary.

Good for you, Mr President. About time you put on a pair of pants and started standing up for yourself against these yahoos.
And, how nice it is to have a president that can properly pronounce "nuclear."

    Or health care issues...
    Or economic issues...
    Or state governing issues...
    Or important political issues...

But she can see Russia from her house! Seriously, it's just more junk coming from a woman who decided that she would be better off telling everyone else how to govern rather than stay in Alaska and govern herself. It is rather smart move in that she doesn't actually have to do anything but can tell everyone else what they should do.

Palin said the recently negotiated treaty with Russia – seeking a reduction in the number of nuclear weapons held by the two countries – is an "unbelievable" move and that "no administration in America's history I think would ever have considered such a step."

And then she went on to talk about the great Ronald Reagan who as a matter of fact suggested that we reduce the U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenal by 1/3, the exact amount Obama agreed to. Is this woman a complete and utter idiot? "You betcha" she is. Taking Sarah Palin's advice about anything except how to skin a moose would be like taking Tiger Woods' advice about how to build a great marriage. The Republican reaction to everything President Obama does is kinda like getting out in the playground at an all-white school and the only black kid is getting pushed back and forth between the bullies to try to intimidate him to "go back where he came from". Keep standing tall Mr. President, good American's white and black support you.

Yo Obama! FYI – Sarah Palin has more executive experience than you, so stop acting as you are the smartest guy in the room...You only spent 120 days in the Senate, but the more you liberals attack Palin, the more popular she becomes...

Gov. Palin, I would just like to point out that even with the reductions we will still have enough to wipe out most of the world's population. Nuclear weapons are too dangerous for anyone to have and we should be talking to other nations with nuclear backed hostile attitude.
