Palin drills down in policy in high-profile speech

New Orleans (CNN) - Her speeches are typically loaded with partisan zingers and Obama-bashing, but for the first time since the 2008 presidential campaign, Sarah Palin delivered a speech that focused as much on policy ideas as it did on political combat.

To be sure, her much-anticipated remarks Friday to the Southern Republican Leadership Conference were laced with a heavy dose of Republican cheerleading that drew cheers from the audience of party activists who had earlier stampeded into the speech venue to snag prime seating for her appearance.

"There is no shame in being the 'Party if No' if the other side is proposing an idea that violates our values, violates our conscience, violates the Constitution," she said, deviating from former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who urged the SRLC crowd on Thursday to pivot to being the "Party of Yes."

But without shying away from heated partisan rhetoric, Palin spent the latter half of her talk expounding on differences between Democratic and Republican energy policies, a comfortable topic for the former Alaska governor and onetime chair of the state's Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.

She called President Obama's decision to expand offshore drilling "smoke and mirrors" - cover for a slate of more liberal energy policies that he and Democrats in Congress plan to enact.

She faulted the Obama administration for not opening up more areas to oil and gas drilling, particularly in her home state of Alaska. It's time to "stop ignoring" the National Petroluem Reserve Alaska and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, she said, even if a caribou has to "take one for the team."

"It's 'Drill, Baby, Drill,' not 'Stall, Baby, Stall,'" she said.

On foreign policy, Palin launched a volley of attacks against the White House that echoed some of the missives she has posted on her Facebook page over the last year. The Obama administration, she claimed, "alienates our friends."

"They treated Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai poorly and acted surprised when he reacted in kind," she said. "And they escalated a minor zoning decision into a major breach with Israel, our closest ally in the Middle East."

And acknowledging Thursday's headlines, Palin couldn't resist a mocking jab at President Obama after he charged in an ABC News interview that she is "not much of an expert" on nuclear weapons.

"And President Obama, with all that vast nuclear expertise he acquired as a community organizer, a part-time senator, and a candidate for president, has accomplished nothing to date with Iran or North Korea," she said.

You know, it always seems to be the same with these extremist Republicans - they complain that the Obama Administration isn't doing something, then when they DO it, the Republican's complain that it's fake or not enough or isn't in line with what they REALLY wanted.

You're not the "Party of No" – you're the party of "Never-ending Whiners"!

As for Sarah Palin, I fail to see how she has ANY expertise on any issue she complains about. She's nothing but a spokesperson spouting what the crazies like to hear.

I love Sarah Palin! Every time she opens her mouth she reminds our country of the kind of air-head, brain-dead, red-neck, hicks who have taken oever the Republican Party.

That's great for Republicans because they can continue to inbreed monguloid constituants that appall not just most Americans – but the entire world (except maybe for Ceasar Chavez).

That's great for Democrats because the rest of the sane voter population has a place to run to as they avoid the freaky goofy extremist Right.

Recently, Failin Palin compared global thermonuclear war to children on a playground. Sorry Sarah, children playing is NOTHING like thermonuclear war. In fact, if there's anything resembling the exact opposite of global thermonuclear war, it's children on a playground. Now Failin Palin is throwing her hand into the Middle East quandry. Here's a hint Sarah – it's nothing like a Scrable game. A balanced and well-designed Energy Policy does NOT include "Drill baby drill" and you can't compare it to a game of Hopscotch. You continue to demonstrate what most of the intelligent world already knows Sarah, you've got the mind of a child. It's time somebody gave you the spanking you deserve....

Every Palin speech is "high-profile." But every Palin speech is also "low-sanity." Her anti-intellectual stance, as well as her sophomoric understanding of reality merely make her a silly annoyance and public joke.

Sarah Palin is Senile and she's a liar. In what part of the next statement did President Obama said he was an EXPERT:

"...if the secretary of defense and the chairman of the Joints Chiefs of Staff are comfortable with it, I'm probably going to take my advice from them and not from Sarah Palin."

Who does Sarah Palin get her advice from???? What makes her an expert to even determine if someone else is an expert or not???? She is Dangerous and needs to go back home and raise her 'special child'.

Sarah – I ask you – what did BUSH do in regards to Iran and North Korea???

Paying Sarah Palin to speak at your gathering is like hiring Buzz Aldrin to dance. Come to think of it, maybe they should hire Sarah to DANCE! At least it would SOUND better and make MORE SENSE.

It's so funny how she can only read a speech, that was prepared by someone else and still dumb as they come? I really hope she's the republican nominee though because it will be yet another slam dunk for the Obama team!!!!

If people think the US will get all the new oil from offshore and would get all the oil from ANWR, they are not very clear on how the oil markets works.
There is no guarentee we would get to use any of the new oil and we certainly will not pay less for it than we would pay for oil from Iran (after accounting for the quality of the oil).

What is telling though is that the partisan hack is saying that drilling offshore is bad if a Democrat does it but good if a republican does it. This say much about what passes for her thought process.

I love the way everyone has gotten under her skin too! Notice how she can't let go of the "crib sheet" incident?

Now, everywhere she goes she tries to make it into a joke by constantly writing on her hand. Ha! What a ninny!

Hey Sarah... I know of a tatoo parlor where you can get your hand permanently inscibed!

Do I see notes in her palm? Sarah, you can't even handle your own daughter who became a teenage mother and you quit as an Alaskan governor. How do you think you can handle the country? You need to stop talking because you don't HAVE ANY SUBSTANCE AT ALL!

I'm just waiting for some dim-witted Dem to make some snarky comment about what appears to be smudged notes written on Palin's hand. At least she probably wrote them herself rather than, Obama-style, reading other people's words off a teleprompter.

But, seriously, for Obama to deride anyone's experience in anything other than jaw-flapping is ridiculous.

Again, this lady never finishes a task she is given, and then she acts as if she is a professional at every topic.

I LOVE how the GOP keeps her in the spot light. She HAS NO CLUE what she is talking about and she IS DIVIDING her own party.

Keep her in the spot light, GOP!!!

The Democrats thank you for this!

As an Independent I have listened and made up my mind for the Mid Term elections and 2012.......I have generally voted Republican but no longer can support this party....they are running everyone out of their party along with all Independents, and some Democrats that are moderate thinkers.......all they want is the right wing conservatives, they are trying so hard to draw in the Tea Party and all other Activists that they are ignoring their own party members that are moderate yet still have some conservative positions.....they have let their party be taken over by the far right radicals (Limbaugh, Beck, Palin).....They tell us that Obama and his administration is turning us into a Socialist country.......I would rather be a Socialist than belong to what I see coming out of the GOP as a Communist Party........when a Party starts to tell you that you have to have certain Ideals, Values, Beliefs when they start to tell you their way is the right way and only way and they continually Obstruct the other party from accomplishing anything that is good for this country, then that to me is more like what Hitler, Stalin did........you have lost my vote until you can become the Party of the people and for the people instead of for just yourselves.......

@Austin – what truth are you talking about? This woman is worse than a parrot. She has no original ideas. No plans. She is an empty headed cretin that mccain (who will burn in hell) pulled out from under a rock from the frozen tundra of AK not once but twice so that she could become a "teabagger" now.
Why don't you try asking her some gotcha questions (meaning what newspapers do you read?).
The more she opens her mouth and squeals the more smart people are understanding what a loser she is.
How cute – the hand writing – what did it say. I am stupid and dumb and an idiot and a loser, but people keep wasting their money on me, blah, blah, blah . . . . . . . . .

Let's see, she got trounced in the general election and then quit as Governor. She showed no particular expertise in any field during the campaign. Now, she is telling the President how to conduct foreign and domestic policy. The only thing positive that I see her doing is being a cheerleader for the GOP. If they are resting their hopes on her and Bachmann, their party is in sad shape? For all the intellectual progress women have made in the last 50 years, these two are trying their best to reverse that trend. Someone help us all.
