Rep. Bart Stupak announces retirement

Marquette, Michigan (CNN) - U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak, a Michigan Democrat criticized for his role in backing President Obama's health care plan, said Friday he won't seek re-election.

The anti-abortion congressman has faced opposition from both the right and the left for his eleventh-hour deal with the White House to support the administration's health care legislation.

Stupak has said he struck the deal because he was convinced that the measure bans federal funding for abortion.

He knew he won't get re-elected for his role in Health Care Reform. Those congressmen who supported Obama on Health Care Plan would better follow his guy.

Sell our your principles, sell out your country, sell out your constituents is what Bart Stupack did.

CNN, I have a suggestion. I just read some of the comments in the previous thread about Bart Stupak, and am absolutely appalled at the ignorance. For the moderators, I would suggest writing down all the false information you see in the comments, and include corrections on the Ticker. How else do we find out what is real and what is made up, if news organizations don't set us straight?

I have to tell you one of the comments that really stuck for me was the one that indicated Bart Stupak sold out and opened the way for tax dollars to be spent for abortions.

Our ignorance of the facts is astounding. So please! do something about it and set the facts out so people can (if they will) understand them.

It’s plain to see, they know full well what the majority of this country thinks. Vote and run, my gosh what a spineless coward.

You will be remembered in years to come Stupak, as the person who jumpstarted our country towards a socialist nanny state.

By the time people fully realize what’s he done to them, he’ll be long gone. The perfect crime

Remember when you were hanging out at C Street with your right wing buddies, congratulating each other on how morally superior you were to everyone else? Well, now your C Street buddies are the folks riling up the dimwits that are threatening you, aren't they?

You really should have been hanging out with a better class of person than Coburn, Vitter and the rest, shouldn't you?

...but they could be bought. Stupak sold out, packed up, and headed out safe in the thought that his highly held values had gotten top dollar.

It's a shame that he is being forced out.
It seems to show two things...on the Democrat side, it doesn't seem that there is much room at all for any pro-life sentiments, even from those who are liberal on all other issues.
On the other side, it seems that if one is pro-life, but not in lock step with Republican economic policy, they get kicked out of the pro-life tent. It makes me wonder if right-wing politicians are just using abortion as a tool to rally the base when their real concern is stopping all entitlement programs.

Stupak shouldn't feel too bad about his plans for early retirement..........There will be MANY other Democrats joining him after the November elections.

The Democrats are going to get clobbered.

If you now look at Obama's approval/disapproval ratngs-–the majority in the country are waking up fast. The majority in the country are now able to see very clearly-–the dictator without his clothes.

Might as well. I doubt he could get re-elected after he caved in on the health care bill.

Thank you Mr. Stupak for serving our great Nation. I wish you and your family well. I don't live in Michigan but if I did would have voted for you . You chose hope over fear and no one can ever take that away from you. May the Blessing of the Lord make you rich and add no sorrow to you.

I am a moderate Independent---conservative in regard to fiscal issues and moderate in regard to social issues.

Until Pelosi/Reid took control of Congress--and the Obama regime began.......I never really had much of a problem with the "moderate" blue dog Dems.

However, once the power/control of Pelosi, Reid and Obama took over-–the blue dogs lost their way. It is sad that they sold their souls for Obama, Pelosi, Reid and the rest of the loony left liberal Democrats.

The Democratic Party is being destroyed-–as all of the moderate, sane Democrats have now been forced out-–and the entire Party will now consist of loony left liberals.

Based on ALL national polls--the MAJORITY in the country-–Republicans and Independents (and even a significant number of moderate Dems)---do NOTsupport/approve of the loony left liberal Dems.

Stupak is in a conservative leaning area-–and the Republicans are now going to win this seat. Hahahhahahahaa--take that Obama, Pelosi, and Reid.

The Democrats are going to get clobbered in the November elections.

Good Riddens to Bad Rubbish, he is a traitor, sold his soul to the Obama Devil for personal gain, and sold out The American People, with a So Called Health Care Reform Bill that will entirely break Seniors as well as all Americans with the exhorbant taxes attached to this bill, and for less quality care, It's a Obination...
He is not being targeted by anyone but himself for what he did to The American People.
And yet, he will receive tons of retirement money and supurb healthcare, unlike the rest of us Americans.
