Obama says Tea Partiers owe him a thank you

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/04/16/art.teaparty6.gi.jpg caption ="President Obama said Thursday night that he thinks the Tea Party movement owes him a thank you."]
(CNN) - Tea Party activists marked Tax Day with a high-profile rally in Washington, DC, and other protests across the country, but President Obama says the anti-tax movement actually owes him a thank you.

Speaking at a Democratic fundraiser in Miami Thursday night, the president touted tax cuts in the stimulus measure and the fact that the tax rate has not been increased for those making less than $250,000 a year.

"So I've been amused in recent days by these people having rallies," he told the crowd at the fundraiser to laughter. "I think they should be saying thank you."

Members of the crowd, who paid between $250 to $1,250 to attend the event, immediately rose to their feet and replied "Thank You!"

The White House noted Thursday that federal taxes were reduced by $173 billion in 2009 and said that the average tax refund is about 10 percent higher than last year.

Obama also won a standing ovation from the Miami crowd when he praised the recent passage of the health care reform plan.

"As my vice president said, 'This is a big deal,'" Obama said to laughter in reference of Vice President Joe Biden's verbal slip at the bill's signing ceremony where he was heard telling the president "This is a big F-ing deal"

"And he was right," Obama said.

it always amazes me how people can be persuaded into making arguments that run contrary to their own situation. some of these tea party supporters listened to the dreck spewed forth by sarah palin, rush limbaugh, glenn beck, etc. and are supporting ideas that would hurt their own finances. if people took time to research how stuff like this actually affects them, rather than listen to some rambling talking head, we'd all be better off. information is power people.

lol I was thinking the same thing the last few days. They are nut jobs that really just don't seem to have a rhyme or reason. They love to choose ingorance over facts.

Doesn't sound like Obama 'ribbed' anyone. He merely stated the facts and the truth....the bottom line is that the upper 1-2% of Americans, those who make more than 250,000/year already get tons and tons of tax breaks. They are able to find ways to write many of their personal expenses off as business expeneses. They get tax breaks on investsment and so forth.....but people who don't make as much, who don't have a home or a boat or a business to write off end up paying the majority of the tax burden that they owe, which isn't the case with many of the rich.

Wow. Just wow. This guy is a narcissistic mess. Making fun of your own country men? As the leader of the free world, he should know better.

Those people will never say thank you. Their movement is based on deliberate misinformation and fear. This movement is full of spiteful, dishonest people being led around by the nose by the likes of Dick Armey, Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachman, and that creepy representative from Iowa. Thank you Mr. President for bringing up facts and I thank you.

Why does it take for President Obama to mention these facts before they are carried media-wide? The tea-jad has been going on for over a year without the msm injecting inconvenient facts into the coverage. Facts and figures are not political commentary. Don't omit empirical evidence for the fear of being labeled with the liberal bias lie.

Just because you cut taxes, does not mean you are being fiscally responsible! The issues are much more about spending! You can't keep growing the federal government and keep cutting taxes! Pay for it now, or pay for it later...

This shows either how out of touch Obama is, or he is merely spinning. The Tea Party movement isn't just about lower taxes, it is equally about lower spending.

I am not even a Tea Partier and I find this action of Obama insulting.

What is amazing to me is that we didnt hear from these tea baggers when President Bush was spending trillions on two war fronts. So lets get this right its ok to spend $ on wars but not to ensure Americans have healthcare, and education. Whats wrong with these people..........

Queue the exaggerated or down right false right-wing talking points provided by Fox and Rush Lipoff.

Mean while....thank you Mr. President. You have to confront these asses. Not for their own good – they aren't going to listen – but because it is demoralizing for the reasonable majority to watch you sit around and take their non-since like some kind of a cow in a hailstorm. It's time to fight back!!

well said Barack! I have no idea why the tea people don't see that the fix we are in is because of 8 Bush years!

BOzo still doesn't get the Tea Party. Current taxes are outrageous enough, but it isn't the current these people are yelling about. They are foreseeing the Ghost of Christmas Future, while Barack is conversing with the present and still sees nothing wrong.

I would not be surprised if someone disagrees with this. And if they do that will show the TRUE reason for their hatered of our president! It's not about the changes that he has done, but the fact of WHO and WHAT he is!! So to PRESIDENT Obama THANK YOU!! MY tax refund was alot more than what I expected!! THANK YOU !!

So letting bush tax cuts run out isn't technically raising taxes on middle America?
In the words of Bill Clinton I guess it depends on your definition of " is" or "raising taxes".
Does the current administration really think we the public are believing they aren't raisng taxes after rasing them billions of dollars.

Mr. President, this is not about tax cuts, this is about being sore losers. Palin and her likes lost in 2008 and talking about taxes is just a cover to get back at you.
Please keep on going Mr. president and help American.

I find it hard to believe that the tea party is made up of people with college education. The evil people who put the organization together for money purposes may be college educated. However, these poor trashy looking people are followers. That all they are. They are not even smart enough to realize that they are being misled.

The tea party activists really do need to do some research, the stimulus plan included the largest middle class tax cut in over a decade, and the wall st bailout they hate ? That was Nov 2008, 3 months before Obama was even elected...
