Obama says Tea Partiers owe him a thank you

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/04/16/art.teaparty6.gi.jpg caption ="President Obama said Thursday night that he thinks the Tea Party movement owes him a thank you."]
(CNN) - Tea Party activists marked Tax Day with a high-profile rally in Washington, DC, and other protests across the country, but President Obama says the anti-tax movement actually owes him a thank you.

Speaking at a Democratic fundraiser in Miami Thursday night, the president touted tax cuts in the stimulus measure and the fact that the tax rate has not been increased for those making less than $250,000 a year.

"So I've been amused in recent days by these people having rallies," he told the crowd at the fundraiser to laughter. "I think they should be saying thank you."

Members of the crowd, who paid between $250 to $1,250 to attend the event, immediately rose to their feet and replied "Thank You!"

The White House noted Thursday that federal taxes were reduced by $173 billion in 2009 and said that the average tax refund is about 10 percent higher than last year.

Obama also won a standing ovation from the Miami crowd when he praised the recent passage of the health care reform plan.

"As my vice president said, 'This is a big deal,'" Obama said to laughter in reference of Vice President Joe Biden's verbal slip at the bill's signing ceremony where he was heard telling the president "This is a big F-ing deal"

"And he was right," Obama said.

Thanks for taking away the over the counter medecine benefits of having a FSA card. That is just one of the little things being quietly eliminated and taxed now. Silent and sneaky taxation tactics.

It is 10% higher due to the First Time Home Buyers credit among others that I cannot get. So far my taxes are more my healthcare costs are going up 50% over the last year and I am very middle class making lass than $100k much less the $250k touted as being more taxed.

HaHa... The protests were about the hole this country is being put in and the huge deficit that is surmounting. Not about, not wanting to pay taxes. And this guy's suppose to be running this country? Like I said before, haha.........

The only rude awakening will be for you, pal. The smart half of the country that elected Obama will keep him in office over any backward conservative that you throw at him, any day of the week.

I'm more than happy to pay for fire departments, state and federal parks, police, schools, roads, the military (Hey, Support the troops right?), EPA, food protection etc etc etc.

I send my taxes in with pride.

He so doesnt get it. 47% of Americans dont pay any taxes. Its not about the amount of taxes people pay, its the fact that so many dont pay any and yet still get all the benefits of those of us who work hard and pay taxes.

So let me get this straight. The President and Congress have committed to spend trillions of dollars over the next few years and they aren't increasing taxes. Surely Obama isn't that stupid, or maybe he is. Spending money on credit from China and leveraging America's future is the problem. I've been a wait and see moderate until these arrogant remarks. I'm going right now to sign up for the Tea Party movement. This guy just doesn't get it.

I agree with our President, unfortunatly these TeaParters are nothing but GOP(conservatives) trying to hoodwink us into believing they're for the middle americans. Ha! We won't fall for that anymore. People need to use common sense, but they are filled with so much racial hate they can't go beyond that. That's their purpose to divide and reinvent themselves so they can get back into power! America better wake up!

This is true. There were $282 billion dollars in tax cuts in the stumulus (35.8% of the total stimulus package), additional small business tax cuts in the recent jobs bill, and tax credits for small businesses in the Health Care bill for hiring and covering employees. All this yet the 44% of the tea party thinks that Obama has raised their taxes. This is only true if they make over 250K per year and still these taxes will not quite go back to the Clinton rates.

Obama, his administration and every thinking American needs to continue to consistently present the facts in the face of the extreme of the Tea Baggers. This group is being financed by the far right wing of our society. The financing and propoganda machines are in place to distort the truth and develop fear. They are doing a good job of that for this gullible small slice of the population. Do you really believe that Dick Armey has your best interests in mind? Seriously, do you believe that? The TEAD would have America believe that they represent the best interest of Americans. They would have America believe that they represent America. This is not true. This is not fact. They are a fringe that has been led to believe what the propoganda machine wants them to believe. If you are a tea bagger, check what you believe and compare it to reality. You may actually awake from your dream.

The reason the fedeal tax were redcued by $173 billion is because 25 million people not having jobs, and not paying any tax with no income. It is not because of the tax cut the president claimed. 173 billion divided by 25 million people = $6920 per person.

Where was the tea party for the following:

    Gas prices soared?
    Medical insurance payments increased?
People were denied medical insurance coverage?
    Veterans living on the street?
Where were you then Tea Party?

Stop being a joke and maybe start being part of the solution. This country has always been taxed.

    April 16, 2010 10:17 am at 10:17 am |

Wow you clueless conservative morons really don't get it.

Your taxes have not been raised.

The repeal of the Bush cuts will not raise your taxes.

(Somehow I doubt you bottom feeders are in the bracket for that.)

And of course the more important lesson for you: TAX CUTS FOR BIG BIZ AND WEALTHY DO NOT HELP THE ECONOMY. It's been proven in our history over and over.

    Thank you President Obama

You are doing a great job, under severely difficult circumstances. Eight years of a Republican Administration cant be undone in 1 year, but you have made great strides.

Thank you for the long hours, your leadership and your personal sacrifices of time and privacy. And thank you to President Obama’s family for enduring the harsh difficulties of being the 1st family.

It appears to me that the Tea Party movement is mostly a group of ill informed people. They talk of socialism when the majority cannot even define a socialism concept. From what I have heard from them it seems that they are a group of people who are reacting to things they have "heard" and not necessarily things that are true. They continually compare President Obama to Hitler when, in fact, their rallies look like old film footage of Nazi rallies. I find the group scary – and this is from an independent voter.

I'm going to so vote for a third party candidate if the Democrats foolishly re-nominate this arrogant scumbag - and the Republcans do something nuts like nominate that cook Palin.... Why can't we have a sober, honest, decent, reliable, and respectable President??? We haven't had one for quite some time.

Well I don't make anywhere near that amount, but my taxes have gone up, I am getting back less Fed taxes this year than last, and I even had more taken out last year because I saw this coming, and for the 1st time, I am having to pay State taxes. He can call it anything he wants, but we can't afford to keep borrowing, and borrowing, somthings have to be cut out or reduced, BESIDE MY TAKE HOME PAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
