Outspoken sheriff won't run for governor in Arizona

(CNN) – Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a fixture in Arizona politics, announced Monday that he will not seek the Republican nomination for governor in his home state.

"I just don't want to leave my 4,000 dedicated employees," Arpaio said. "I am going to contribute my service and fight as the Sheriff of Maricopa County."

"I don't want to be egotistical, but I could be the governor if I ran," he boasted. "My polls are very high. I got the money. I got the polls. I got the support."

Arpaio made the announcement in an interview set to air on CNN’s "John King USA" on Monday night.

Had he decided to jump the race, Arpaio would have faced a crowded GOP primary featuring incumbent Gov. Jan Brewer, state Treasurer Dean Martin, Tucson attorney John Munger and and Yavapai County businessman Buz Mills.

Arpaio’s tough approach to law enforcement has earned him a following among anti-illegal immigration activists both in Arizona and around the country. He welcomed the recently-passed Arizona law that grants state police officers greater power in questioning suspected illegal immigrants.

If I were a legal immigrant in Arizona I would be PROUD to show my papers. I believe only the illegals are protesting. Try going to another country and doing what the illegals are doing and you WILL be thrown in jail. If you don't like what is happening in America–GO BACK WHERE YOU CAME FROM. Joe I wish you would run for President.

Wow! Talk about eating their young! I thought Republicans had it written in stone that they were not to run against incumbent Repbulicans in primaries (unless Sara, Rush or Glenn tells them to)! Let me guess, each of the others running is claiming he or she is more conservative than the others. Here is the real test – let's see if any of them can spell the word "Constitution" and describe it and all the ammendments. If so, they are too liberal for the Tea Baggers and should drop out of the race.
Yes, the Republican Party base is who turns out for their Primaries. Same with the Democrats. Remember, though, those bases will make up less than 20% of the respective party electorates on most election days! If they want their candidates to win, those candidates will need to play more to the Center and less to the fringes.

Sure Joe, why be under the microscope of the State's head office when you can run your underground operation and make millions off of the blood sweat and tears of those you oppress? This man does not deserve to be the dog catcher in town much less any office he now holds or will in the future.

This guy should run for President; it sure would be a safer country then instead of this pacifist we have now.

We need this guy to run for president, and oust that limp-wristed, nancy-boy waffle that's squating in the White House.

Shame he's not running...that would have been the final nail in the coffin for the GOP.
This old nutbag is the inspiration for Boss Hogg: a relic from the Old South; I don't know if he looks better in Fascist Brownshirt & Jackboots, or Planter Whites and bullwhip. This sheriff is everything the USA has grown out of since WWII.

You know, some Tea Bagger is going to make a fortune selling Sheriff Joe action figures at rallies now, if my last post ever makes it out of moderation that is.

If Joe Arpaio would have run for governor, yes, he probably would have won.

He won his last county-wide election with well over 60% of the vote.

Regarding the recent SB 1070 controversy, Arizonans welcome legal immigrants, they do not welcome illegal aliens who sneak into our country, cutting in line in front of others from around the world trying to come here legally.

Can we let the good people out of AZ then build a wall to keep people like this guy in?

Does anyone now doubt the sincerity of the Sheriff when he says illegals are ruining this country? Just look at what happened in Times Square.

    "tough approach to law enforcement"

This is what passes for journalism today at CNN?Joe Arpaio is a murderer that runs his prisons in a way that would make even the most seasoned Abu Graihb interrogator blush.

Wow! John King interviews another rightwing crook. Did John ask the sheriff about any ot the investigations that are happening in the sheriff department? Of course not – that would be reporting the news not making it. Joe will be lucky if he stays out of jail. He has been sheriff way to long and his "I am way better than everyone else" is getting a bit old and expensive. You should see some of the in jail video of his deputies killing an in-mate.
