Florida GOP auctions Crist painting on eBay

Washington (CNN) - The Republican Party of Florida has followed through on its promise to auction off an oil painting of Gov. Charlie Crist, who bolted from the party last week to run for Senate as an independent.

The state party took to eBay Monday afternoon to sell off the framed portrait under the banner "Help the Republican Party of FL Get Our Money Back!"

The eBay product listing, which describes the subject as "Untrustworthy, Self-Serving Politician," drips heavily with sarcasm and outright disdain for the first-term governor.

"Canvas is naturally sensitive to changes of temperature and humidity, just as the Charlie Crist's political convictions are subject to fluctuations in poll numbers," reads one mock disclaimer on the auction page.

Or this: "Ornate gold frame made of manufactured wood, similar to the fabricated conservative values of the politician depicted within."

The framed portrait was commissioned by former Florida GOP chairman Jim Greer, a Crist ally who was forced out of his post earlier this year by conservative activists furious with the party's freewheeling spending habits.

The party, now helmed by state Sen. John Thrasher, said Greer also tapped into donor money to pay for a similar portrait of himself. A Florida GOP spokeswoman said the party spent $7,500 on the two paintings.

"This would be one of many examples of lavish and excessive spending on the backs of RPOF donors that occurred during the Crist/Greer administration at the RPOF," party spokeswoman Katie Gordon Betta told CNN.

Bidding ends on May 10.

The Rasmussen Reports poll released on April 22. "Fifty-six percent (56%) of voters now approve of the way Crist is handling his job, up 11 points from a month ago.

The far right wing of the GOP will ram Rubio down Floridian’s throats but a sizable majority of Floridians, the ones who will actually send someone to Washington love the guy

Nasty comments, and where was the GOP was spending wildly? The party that whines about "personal responsibility" never seems to have it!

I'm not sure how that kind of behavior comes off as anything but vindictive and mean-spirited. Assuming that this is the rule and not exception when it comes to the Florida GOP's political culture, Crist can probably turn this around on them pretty easily.

I have no love for Mr Christ, but I have to say, that I'm neither surprised nor offended by his decision to leave the Republican Party...
What with the purity tests and all, the Republican party has made themselves look like lock stepping militants. I'll be surprised, at this rate, if they can win ANY seats in the mid-term elections. Important people IN the Republican party don't trust Republicans, why should the public at large?

Can you believe that the GOP turned their backs on this good man...yet STRONGLY support the likes of Sanford in South Carolina ??? What a party of hypocrites. They ought to be ashamed of themselves. I only hope that this Nov. the American voter sends this group (who have stolen the very soul of the GOP) a resounding message.

If the Florida GOP wasn't so far out in right field(ie;the cheap seats) Gov Crist wouldn't have left the party. The only ones to blame here is the party its self for selling out to the faaar right. God forbid the should support a moderate that did what was right by the state and its citizens and NOT by what the party wanted.. I hope Crist wins, it would serve the GOP right to lose the election...

Ah, but who "owns" the portrait? Was it bought and paid for by the Florida Republican party? Was it a gift? Did they get it on loan from the real owner? If they cannot prove ownership eBay MUST take it down from the auction site and report it to the FBI as an art theft! I bet that'll crinkle someone's jockey shorts at the FRPHQ!

"Untrustworthy, Self-Serving Politician," or "Canvas is naturally sensitive to changes of temperature and humidity, just as the Charlie Crist's political convictions are subject to fluctuations in poll numbers,"

Boy, talk about the pot calling the kettle black. And no, as much as you conservatives would like to think you caught a liberal being racist, it is a term from as far back as the 1600's meaning hypocrisy. Just thought I would throw that in knowing what you neocons would be thinking.
