U.S. economy adds 290,000 jobs

Washington (CNN) - The U.S. economy added 290,000 jobs in April - more than economists expected - but the unemployment rate went up to 9.9 percent, the federal government said Friday.

"Job gains occurred in manufacturing, professional and business services, health care, and leisure and hospitality," the Labor Department said. "Federal government employment also rose, reflecting continued hiring of temporary workers for Census 2010."

The nation's unemployment rate was 9.7 percent in January, February and March.

It is a start. It isn't enough, but it is a start. Some will say that this is because of the stimulus while other won't. The problem is that we can't ask everyone where and when the money came from to make their job possible.

  3. Liberalism is a mental disorder

Over trillion in (NON) stimulus bill cash and another 1/2 trillion in suppposed "jobs Bills" and the unemployment rate is still 10%. More failed liberal policies and failed Keynesian economic theory. They continually fail and yet the libs keep pushing them. Insanity!

    This is good news indeed!

But since the rate went up to 9.9%, it goes to show how many folks were sitting on the sidelines and jumped back into the job search market.

I never liked that statistic – it's pretty useless.

Great but how about the other millions of jobs that were lost under the Republicans leadership. The economy was the worst since the Great Depression and I just can;t believe how anybody can want the GOP back in charge.

I don't no were they are coming up with these numbers. In Virginia ,the state is still laying off people .The local government is raising taxes because of cutbacks in payments they receive from the state. We just had a bunch of teachers put out of work.I know that some of the gains were due to temporary jobs due the cencus. But still there are a lot of people that can't find jobs and most of the jobs that are there barely pay more than minimum wage.

So we are losing jobs faster than making jobs. Great stimulus plan we have. Political payoff is more like it!

Its g/morning again in America.Though the recovery process is slow in the midst of looming fiscal deficits, I still nurse the hope of a remarkable recovery of the Us economny in no distant time.the news of additional job generation clearly shows that obama's econonmic agenda is working despite the mounting opposition of the party of No.For Barack Obama, its yes We Can.

You bet federal govt. employment also rose. The more jobs Obama can create for government the more hope he has to push his Socialist agenda through. He'll be pushing for legislation to give voting privileges to illegal immigrants soon. Wake up folks or soon you'll be hoping to get a job in Mexico.

This a good start to our recovery but most people must understand that unemployment will catch up as the economy continue to improve. For all of those people who keep screaming where are the jobs you should ask the people on wall street who are make a killing with the money that they should be creating jobs. Don't blame the President because he is trying very hard to get jobs for our working class people. The last administration left this mess for President Obama and the republican party doesn't want our country to recover so they can try and get the almighty power to finish screwing up our country. Remember Greece.

This is good news. But republicans are going to spin this negatively as much as they can.

    And yet . . .

Big Business CEO's, having shipped job after job overseas, are content to sit back without a care in the world to watch our American citizens continue to suffer unemployment and housing foreclosures.

Perhaps NOW would be a good time to start bringing jobs back home to America?

I won't hold my breath in anticipation, though.

  22. Ya but...

Republicans will only focus on the NEGATIVE in this report focusing only on the u/e % rate...and will neglect to inform the public that the rate hasn't been affected cuz the jobs are there, people just haven't found them yet.

you know I saw this republican strategist..and that's all it is..STRATEGY! they just want to win an election, and they do it by twisting things, LYING..LYING AND MORE LYING...that's the republican playbook! they never stick to facts, don't answer questions, lie, instill fear, the list goes on and on! i'm sick of republicans! NEVER WOULD I EVER VOTE FOR ONE! til the day i die!

Whirlpool: Taking Tax Dollars, Taking Jobs

It can barely get greedier than this: We’re in tough economic times, so Whirlpool receives $19 million in taxpayer funds to create jobs. Then it turns around and announces it will shutter its Evansville, Indiana refrigerator plant and displace the 1,100 workers there. Disgusting.

And where, you might ask, will those jobs go? They’ll follow so many other lost family-supporting jobs on the NAFTA train to Mexico.

  24. Save America, impeach the treasonous republicans

As the economy shows it is turning around, what will the right wingnuts have left to harp about? Oh yeah, they will always have their Toxic Conservative Manure (TCM) and false conspiracy theories.

Most are government jobs and once Obama gets done destroying the private sector you won't have your government job because there won't be anyone left to pay your salary.
