Specter explains prior vote against Kagan

Washington (CNN) - Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pennsylvania, who switched parties a year ago, issued the following statement:

“There is no doubt that Elena Kagan has exemplary academic and professional credentials. And she has been a pioneer for women, serving as the country’s first female Solicitor General and as the first woman to be Dean of Harvard Law School. I applaud the President for nominating someone who has a varied and diverse background outside the circuit court of appeals.

"I voted against her for Solicitor General because she wouldn't answer basic questions about her standards for handling that job. It is a distinctly different position than that of a Supreme Court Justice.

“I have an open mind about her nomination and hope she will address important questions related to her position on matters such as executive power, warrantless wiretapping, a woman’s right to choose, voting rights and congressional power."

I really, really hope Sestak beats Specter (it is looking that way). This is a pathetic answer. Its obvious that he was just doing as Mitch said.

Why should we be asking those kinds of questions anyways? We should NOT be asking her personal opinions on those sort of things, because her personal opinions should not matter if she will uphold the law.

It's the same thing every time though...ALL the Senators (REP and DEM) are trying to make a political statement out of this nomination. So sick of it.

What she answers doesn't matter as she can say what she wants and then 'judge' how she feels later on.

Let her history determine her stance on certain issues. I'm fairly certain that it will not fall on the side of the constitution...the single most important issue in raising a new judge. Race, background, religion... it's all trivial when compared to how she views the constitution. Which will be very hard as she doesn't have a background as a judge.

Who could bank on the integrity of a party switcher like Specter. This jerk has the integrity of a skunk. He screwed over the Dems as a GOP'ER swithched parties to Demo and is a unreliable vote.Hopefully he will get kicked out of office even if it costs us demos the majority.Maybe Specter and LIE-BREMAN can start and independent party. No one would care what theirvalues are. They Could make Palin their spokesperson.

Translated: I am a Democrat now so since a guy on my side made the nomination, I will vote for her now. Come on Spec, what type of lame statement is that??? You are only going to vote for to save your butt in this years election. As much as I hate the Republican Jihadist, I hope you lose in November, and lose badly. The people of Pennsylvania deserve much better representations

"Given Kagan’s...statements suggesting that the Constitution 'as originally drafted and conceived, was defective,’ you can expect Senate Republicans to respectfully raise serious and tough questions"

Hey Mushmouth, it WAS defective, you tapdancing conservatard. Unless, of course, Captain Token would like us to give him only 3/5 of a vote each election? Or how about we just go back to no vote and lynchings? Seriously...have you conservative nutjob Limbots lost your ever-loving minds? Did you not notice the 20+ amendments?

Anyone who buys the GOP's/conservatards' professions of deep concern for the Constitution is a complete and utter moron. Conservatives are the ones who are livid that the Constitution protects women's right to choose. Conservatives are the ones who hate the mandated separation of church and state and consistently refer to us as a "krischun nashun." Conservatives are the ones who opposed civil rights and equal treatment for minorities and womens' suffrage. Conservatives are the ones who resort to "states rights" arguments every time they don't like a federal law that pre-empts their agenda of religiosity, white supremacy, corporatocracy and giving up freedoms in a pantcrapping haze of fear all in the name of "sekyooritah." Conservatives are the ones pushing for laws that would allow the federal government to revoke or suspend our civil rights and/or your citizenship WITHOUT A FAIR TRIAL OR A CONVICTION (i.e., guilty until proven innocent).

Conservatives are the ones who need to STFU. We're not listening anymore, you hypocritical, power-grubbing partisan monkeys. Go throw your ideological turds somewhere else.

Don't think you'll have to wait until November. He's likely going to lose his primary next week to a REAL Democrat, Iraq war veteran Rep. Joe Sestak, who will then stomp right-winger Pat Toomey in November. Pennsylvania is not the same state which elected Rick Santorum back in 1994. A far-right radical like Toomey could be elected to the Senate in Mississippi or Wyoming but not Pennsylvania. Sorry, SocialismBad!

    *********************

    Yup!

He could be Cheney, or Rove, or Limbaugh, or one of many GOP weasels.

On the weasel scale, compared to those, Spector doesn't even move the needle.

Let's think for a minute what might have been different when Specter voted against Kagan. What could it be? What could possibly make her a better candidate for the Supreme Court? Her legal qualifications and background are the same. Her accomplishments are the same. Her political affiliation hasn't change! Maybe something has changed about Sen. Specter?

Duh! Sen. Specter, how stupid do you truly think we are? Well, I guess we'll find out on May 18th if PA voters are as stupid as you think.
