Obama 'confident' on July 2011 deadline in Afghanistan

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama said Wednesday he is "confident" his administration will meet its self-imposed deadline to start a U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan in July of 2011.

But there's "going to be some hard fighting" over the next few months, he warned. Taliban and other extremist forces are "tough," he said.

He also stressed that the U.S. campaign in Afghanistan will continue long after the deadline.

"We are not suddenly, as of July 2011, finished with Afghanistan," he said during a meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai at the White House. "This is a long-term partnership."

Over confident is the correct term..... weak and naive Obama understands nothing about war, he only knows how to spend money we don't have. After all what did you expect when you elected a community organizer to run the country?

  3. Randolph Carter, I'm no expert but...

You guys realize that this isn't about fighting terrorism, right? It's about future natural gas pipeline rights. Our government doesn't really care who winds up in power there as long as the gas flows. As much as I dig Obama, he's pretty much a "lesser of two evils" corporate sellout like the rest. Name one truly progressive thing he's done since taking office. And they call him a socialist. Sheesh. Have a nice day!

How many will die from now to August 2011? How many will die during this long-term partnership? How many will be coming home with brain injury or loss of limbs or emotional disorders? Talking about troop withdrawals, how are we doing in Iraq? Has anything good come from either of these wars? Our country needs to heal.

Eight years into the bungled mess bush left behind, there actually seems to be a strategy to (1) kill al quaeda, (2) end our involvement in Afghanistan, and (3) get us out of Iraq. Unlike his predecessor, Obama does know what he doesn't know, and therefore works with the military and diplomatic leaders to build a comprehensive strategy. That is opposed to mr. "I listen to the generals" (well, actually I fire any general who doesn't stick with my war strategy), who didn't plan for anything.

How your neocons say some of the stuff you say is beyond me.

I'm very glad we went with the smart community organizer, as opposed to the imbicile who chose Palin as a running mate.

yeah, I guess we didn't get crap when we had an incompetent baffon such as Bush for eight years. Spending money we didn't have on two wars one which we had no business starting to begin with. It's funny when Bush gave tax cuts to the rich to onle have them send jobs overseas no one said a thing. And people wonder whypeople think that many who oppose obama oppose him because of his race. I have many reasons to dislike Obama policies, yet I offer alternatives vice just saying we elected a community organizer. Enough with the complaining without offering a solution.

  9. Ferret out the BS

Well when we basically left Afghanistan on its own rather abruptly before, it didn't fare so well. A pull out must start sometime lets hope its gradual, organized, disciplined, and well thought out otherwise we gould be sending the country back into a quagmire.

Karzai wanted a long term commitment that we would stay there. Obama gave him that and gave us the usual BS. Remember how he wasn't going to sign a healtchare reform bill unless it lowered healthcare costs......anyone see the latest CBO report?

Sure a weak & naive Obama knows how to spend money.
A trillion dollars down the drain in the Iraq fiasco, the profiteering, the horrifying loss of precious American lives. A whole region turned into a hot bed of violence & breeding ground for extremism. Brilliant achievemnts by the previous admn.

President Obama has held Karzai's feet to the fire like no other president has and Karzai knows this. Keep up the good work Mr. President.

Dear Enough.... Care to tell us who got us into this mess? Here's a hint, it wasn't a community organizer.... it was a baseball team owner with an average IQ and a fake southern drawl.

From what I've seen, The current President has done an amazing turn around from what the previous Pres. did and this one is putting the cost on the books.

See, your buddy Bush kept all the war costs off the books so if you think he knew how to keep the spending in check, you are only telling lies to yourself.

    @ Enough:

"Weak and naive Obama" has taken out more more Al Queda and Talifban in the year and a half that he has been president than Bush did in the entire seven years he was president after 911. Now, if Bush had actually tended to the war against the terrorists who ATTACKED us on 911 instead of diluting that war so he could spend all of our blood and treasure in Iraq, his war of CHOICE, we might not still have to be in Afghanistan today! Guess it takes a "community organizer" to understand that!

Karzai is corrupt and stoled the last Afghanistan election. He's stated that the U.S. is meddling in their affairs. Why don't we start getting our troops out now before getting more killed just for this corrupt person?Obama needs to wake up to reality !!

What kind of double speak nonsense is this? If we pull out and the Afghans can't defend themselves adequately against the Taliban, then we will be in a long term relationship with the Taliban unless we re-engage with more troops to help them. Odummie is showing the world how utterly CLUELESS he is.

We'll wait and see how the Iraq withdrawal goes. As the time draws closer, the violence is upticking to try and keep us engaged.....and keep us spending, for nothing.

Isn't it nice of Obama to let our enemies know when we'll be leaving?
Goat forbid he actually let reality on the ground determine that!

Too bad the Taliban and al Qaeda don't have self-imposed time limits, eh?

We have pulled most of our troops from Iraq and I think this president has fulfilled more of his promises in short time he has been in the office than Bush did in 8 years he was in the office.
I just spoke to a young soldier that is currently in Iraq and he said they are packing up everything. It will take some time to get out completely but we are working on it.
Our servicemen and women love their commander and chief.
