Palin targets 'extreme greenies' opposed to drilling

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/06/02/art.palin.twitter.jpg caption="Palin is targeting opponents of ANWR drilling on Twitter."](CNN) – Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is using the Gulf Coast oil spill to promote the issue of drilling in the Arctic Wildlife National Refuge – the 20-million protected acres where untapped oil and gas reserves have long served as a lightning rod of controversy.

"Extreme Greenies: see now why we push 'drill, baby, drill' of known reserves & promising finds in safe onshore places like ANWR? Now do you get it?" the former Republican vice presidential nominee wrote Tuesday evening on her Twitter account.

That comment followed a similarly-themed tweet last week after President Obama announced a moratorium on deep offshore drilling for six months, while an independent commission reviews the explosion of the BP rig that caused the ongoing leak.

"Deep offshore moratorium? Then correspondingly allow more onshore drilling, incl ANWR reserves. Domestic oil's still required in US industry," she tweeted Thursday.

During the 2008 presidential campaign, Palin was a strong advocate of drilling both offshore and in ANWR, a position that was repeatedly expressed her now-famous phrase "Drill Baby Drill."

In her Oct. 2008 vice presidential debate with Joe Biden, Palin specifically took aim at him for opposing offshore drilling efforts.

"You even called drilling – safe, environmentally-friendly drilling offshore – as raping the outer continental shelf," Palin said at the debate. "There – with new technology, with tiny footprints even on land, it is safe to drill and we need to do more of that."

I am so embarrassed to be an Alaskan. This women does not get it. I cannot believe that she is that rude, ill mannerd and thoughtless that she would use the Gulf Spill to promote drilling in ANWR. You don't use a catastrophe like this, when people are suffering, scared, watching a way of life being destroyed to justify drilling else where. Most people with any common sense would know or realize, let the fires go out and the smoke settle before you start a new one. Drilling right now is going to be a sore subject whether it is onshore or offshore. And living in AK I can assure the public there are spills with onshore drilling, and BP is at the root of a lot of those spill on the North Slope, on land. I am not against drilling, as long as it is done right, with standards to prevent injuries, leaks and blowouts. NOT standards of it is not broke so we will leave it be until it breaks then fix it. Anytime humans do anything, there will always be a footprint left behind, multiply that by the number of humans, that is a lot of footprints.

"Causes Waves?" Don't you mean "raises eyebrows?" Or are you saving that gem for later today?

Can't see what's causing waves here – same ol' rhetorics from Palin that contradict other things she has said in the past. Not that she cares, but will she every realize that the general public doesn't take anything she says seriously anymore? Such a sad person.

It's not enough to destroy one environmentally important and unique area, we now use this as a reason to destroy a second one. She talks as though ANWR doesn't have it's own set of challenges, and as if the oil companies have been up front with "we the people" about environmental protections that they employ. As my scout leader use to say "Trust is hard to earn and easy to lose". It's time the government put in place the necessary regulations and oversight staff for oil drilling and exploration. It's time the oil companies consider all aspects of the impacts of their product and not just their bottom line.
Only after complete and thorough environmental studies are done should any more drilling in sensitive areas be allowed. Some areas should be off limits forever.

P.S. It is a small plant and it's the only one we have.

Keith Oberman could not have made a truer statement, "This lady is stupid". With all the oil gushing out into the Gulf, she's going to push for more drilling? Anyone who listens to this nut case needs to have their head examined.

There is no way to clean up oil spilled in the Artic, this has been documented for years, but hey it is ok because it will only kill the animals and sea life where we cannot see it. Palin wants to drill in Alaska because as an Alaskan she gets royalties, period! This is about money and the environment be dammed.

"Deep water" wells should stop. The Industry obviously does not have the knowledge, personnel or equipment to deal with this situation. "Shallow water" wells are different. They can be readily accessed by maintenance or repair crews in the event of a spill, however, we need to get off the "Oil Diet." The shortsightedness of the Drill Baby Drillers is astounding.

I also find it hysterical that the people who most want the Government out of their lives....are the very ones who are screaming the loudest for Government takeover and intervention in this catastrophy.

Extreme greenies? Sounds very mature & Presidential. Sarah doesn't see the big picture. The U.S. needs to build for a future less dependent on imported oil. The BP Gulf crisis only makes that more plain. No one would call T-Boone Pickens a liberal, but he has a great set of starting ideas. We need to recognize the need for change, and that does not include drilling in ANWR.

Is it possible to simply focus your efforts on promoting alternative energies? Drilling off shore or on wildlife refuges are unfavorable to those eco-systems. We have this thing you might have heard of called the sun. It shows up everyday. It is an untapped resource for energy. We also have a billion empty rooftops sitting around which could occupy solar banks to harness and channel solar energy from the sun onto the grid. All these rooftops are already in debt of displacing habitats so do we have to displace it even more by their co-dependency on oil? Consider a positive option before exercising the habit of throwing stones. I wish politicians in general could simply forge ahead instead of wasting time pointing fingers.

Another thing, why do Alaskan tax dollars get spent on you to tweet this kind of stuff? This is done on the clock correct? Again time and money well spent.

If it was so safely run, one well just wiped out the gulf coast and is still going after 7 weeks, and the "responsible" oil company has no idea what to do about the crisis yet is gearing up its PR machines. Palin, you wanted drilling in the Gulf, and here you are trying to take political opportunities where they aren't smart right now. I guess you made that fence too high.
