She should not be given a break, especially since she has a pattern of such behavior towards Israel. I wish non-Jewish folk would talk about her comments too, not just Jewish organizations and leaders.

It is too sad that truth has to be censored when it does not fit those who want to deny the truth or hide from it.

What she said is and has been the view of a lot of people.

Israel should not be given a free pass from their actions in this conflict. But it seems many feel they have no duty or any responsibility for what has happen and is happening now in that part of the world.

It really does take two in any conflict and Israels' hands are not clean by any means. But until we and they accept their part in this peace will there will never happen.

Give her a break. A flip cam video camera was put in her face, and she was put on the spot by being asked to comment on something that she was necessarily thinking about. Is the white house press room a better place now that she is gone? no. how can 30 seconds of video ruin someone's carer. not fair.

Yes, she is an old lady who said something stupid. Her entire career should not be disgarded because of a few ill chosen words. After all, how many 89 year olds are always coherent?

Retirement is good, disregarding all she has accomplished is not.

.....if you wish to be honest... the USA along with it's allies in WWII created a Jewish State on what was Arab soil. They (the jews) should have been returned to the homes they were kidnapped from. She is not totally off the mark. I don't think she was being anti-semite at all, I think she feels bad for ground stolen from one country only because this country did not want jews coming to the USA and it's allies did not want to return to the jews what was rightfully theirs in land and property.

Are you nuts? Do you really have to ask that question? What she said was reprehensible. She's outlived her usefulness and needs to go. Of course, the Liberals on this blog will try to explain away what she said but she doesn't get to just walk away from it.

First, I don't in any way agree with what she said. BUT ... if a bunch of idiots are legally allowed to spew vehement words attacking the soliders who are fighting for my country, and the (immigration) laws of my country that remain largely unenforced, then she certainly has the right to say whatever the hell she pleases. Obviously, her personal views negate her ability to be unbiased. But, in recent years, those of us old enough to remember Walter Cronkite, have witnessed the demise of fair and impartial reporting of only the facts. The days when "reporters" were allowed to share their personal opinions on any subject matter was the day the news reporting industry went all to poop. Some of us aren't stupid. Just give us the FACTS, and we'll form our own opinions. We don't now, and never needed, anyone to tell us what to think.

She should be given a permanent break from political reporting. Her lack of knowledge of history demonstrates she is not able to do the job she used to do.

Would she catch a break if she had said, "All African Americans should go home - to Africa?" I don't think so. She should be asked why she's living here. Like most of our citizens, I don't believe Thomas is a Native American. Her parents migrated from Lebanon so what's she doing here?

She should be forgiven if she asks for forgiveness but I doubt she will.

NO she shouldn't be given a break...I am no fan of Israel because they have been a blocked any real peace efforts taken the land of the Palestinians at will. What I do feel is that if Helen had said this about the Palestinians the media wouldn't even have reported it.

No, she should not be given a break. Nor should other reporters who cease to be objective reporters and bias their reporting based on their own points of view. There is a place for reporters who want to verbalize their opinions. It's called the op-ed page or the cable yellfests. But, they are not reporters.

For better or for worse, that would largely mean brooming out the entire Washington press corps. On second thought, that would definitely be for the better.

Helen Thomas is someone who everyone put up with for sentimental reasons. She should have retired years ago and I am glad her senility finally led her to open her yap in an inappropriate way that was obvious enough to get canned.

while it is true that words matter and hers were certainly of the most explosive, what happened to being able to voice our thoughts?

she is a journalist, and that embarressment to cable Beck is a commentator, this is true, but when is she not a journalist?

when is she free to say her thoughts?

I think this whole reaction was way over the top, I think Ari Flesher is a dork and should not be listened to

and... I think Israel gets a free pass on everything... this needs to stop

Helen Thomas should read the Bible and find out which nation God gave this land to and then truly ask to be forgiven for such a statement.

If evryone would take the time to read and stop making such remarks they know nothing about, we would all think more highly of them...

  18. Disgusted

I was always a fan and admirer of Helen Thomas. I admired her tenacity, I admired her pushing her way to the front of the pack in an era when women weren't taken seriously as professionals.

Her comments were disgusting and out of line, however. It showed a lack of consideration, it showed a lack of understanding and, coming from a reporter, displayed a gross failure to remain impartial.

It won't "taint" or "tarnish" her career. Quite the contrary. The tarnish has been removed to reveal the vitriol and hatred that lies beneath, much as Mel Gibson revealed his. He tried to blame it on drinking (if you drink ouzo, it doesn't make you Greek; if you drink chianti, it doesn't make you Italian), but drinking only releases inhibitions, allowing the true sentiments to come through.

If only Helen had been drunk, she, too, could insult the sensibilities of Americans.

Would we tolerate anyone saying, "Get out of the US – go back to Africa?" Of course not.

Sorry, but this former admirer now curses the day of her birth.

Shame on you, Helen. You're a hater, pure and simple.

She said a stupid, offensive thing, and she did the right thing by retiring. But if we're going to ask all journalists and pundits who ever said anything dumb and offensive, we wouldn't have many - or any - people on TV or radio or working for newspapers or magazines.

Much worse and way more offensive than Helen Thomas are Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Pat Buchanan, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, etc., etc. And that's just on the right.

Yes, Thomas should be given the break NOT because of her age but who she is, where she comes from and the fact that many of the same sentiments directed at Muslims and Mexicans do not show the same immediate backlash as this did.

  21. Peace

People need to understand that Helen could not have worked in the White House for all these years, if she had a terrible character right from the beginning. The capability of controlling of what we say or do shrinks as we age. So does the body. At her age, the capability of thinking or caring of what she does is paddling backwards. She is almost at a level of 8 years old child in thinking. Its the nature and no one can do anything about it. She needs to be taken as she is now and be forgiven!
