Salazar defends 'pause button' on deepwater drilling

Washington (CNN) - Interior Secretary Ken Salazar on Wednesday defended the Obama administration's six-month federal moratorium on deepwater drilling, which has come under fire from critics who argue that it's vital for reducing the dependence on foreign oil.

Speaking before the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, Salazar said the moratorium was necessary so "as we move forward with any kind of deepwater operation, that we can assure the American public and we can assure that everyone who was watching that in fact it can move forward in a safe way."

The moratorium comes as President Obama's oil spill commission investigates what caused the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion April 20. Its report is due in six months.

If BP's Hayward doesn't stop this leak eventually, he is not going to make it to the men's room.

Those dopes in the Administration: They nor anyone else could have prevented the accident in the Gulf; and Obama and the other dopes can study this till the cows come home but they can't stop an accident. Be assured that the oil companies do not want oil spills as that depletes their profits, but the floundering US administration does not worry about the bottom line - they worry only about the politics.

A former under secretary to Gen Colin Powell mentioned the oil spill, Haliburton, and DICK CHENEY in the same breath about one hour ago.

You heard me correctly folks. A radio program on CBC (canada) called " As it happens" which airs at 6.30PM wekdays and is available on American public radio. This interview was betwen 7.00PM and 7.30PM this evening. Get the transcript.

I thought this whole situation is very strange and smells of a conspiracy. This may have been done to make the president look bad and to give him his own Katrina. They are two different occurances nonetheless.

I am sorry that some people who work in the oil rigs might be out of a job, but right now they could be helping with the clean up that one of those oil rigs caused.
What is more important a handful of people with no jobs or the ecological disaster and more people with no jobs for years/decades to come.

Who in their right mind...without putting the usual spin on it to make it sound good.....would want more deepwater drilling. How many never-ending massive oil spills can our coasts take?
