Washington (CNN) - President Obama announced Wednesday that he has asked Gen. David Petraeus to replace Gen. Stanley McChrystal as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan.
Obama said McChrystal's conduct "does not meet the standard that should be set by a commanding general" and undermines both civilian authority and trust.
He said his decision to change commanders in Afghanistan is "a change in personnel, but ... not a change in policy."
Obama said he could not maintain a "unity of effort" in the Afghan war without a change of command. Obama said he won't "tolerate division" among his military commanders. "Our nation is at war," he said at the White House. "We face a very tough fight in Afghanistan."
Obama is such a disgrace. What a shame that he replaced McChrystal. He wasn't questioning orders or being insubordinate, he was only giving insight to the first few meetings of the President and opinions on others in his staff.
I'm a graduate of West Point as well and believe it was a huge mistake to let McChrystal go at this time.
The war will never be won without a change in policy. The wrong one was fired.Tiptoeing through the tulips will not get it done.
Yes, that was all that could be done. Once your feelings and thoughts go public- especially negative- you can say 'bye bye' to your job. Governmental or Private especially if you have a high position. Hope others heed this example.
Obama shouldn't have let McChrystal resign. He should have busted his sorry butt down to Private and put him on Potato Peeling duty.
It is unfortunate that Gen.McChrystal was asked to resign and was replaced by Gen.Petraeus. Gen.McChrystal should have been a bit
more tacit with his interview. True, lots of people felt he just said
what he was thinking. That is not always a positive thing to do.
Example: A friend of mine had a very good job in a brokerage house.
At an office party she had a bit too much to drink. In conversation at the
party she said what she felt about her boss. It was negative in comment.
Well, the Boss overheard the conversation, pretended to ignore her statements at the party. But the next day, she was relieved of her job with the company. If she had been a bit more tacit, she would've still had the
position.I guess the old saying "never kick a gift horse in the mouth".
