Official: Obama moved quickly to find McChrystal replacement

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/06/23/art.obama.rose.dimmler.jpg caption="President Obama announced the resignation Wedenesday of Gen. Stanley McChrystal."]Washington (CNN) - It's still unclear whether President Barack Obama had made up his mind before sitting down Wednesday with Gen. Stanley McChrystal, but CNN has learned that during their one-on-one meeting, Obama gave the general a chance to defend himself.

"The president asked him about the article," said a senior administration official, referring to a Rolling Stone magazine article containing comments from McChrystal and his staff that appear to mock top civilian officials,
including the vice president.

"He [McChrystal] tried to explain the situation," the official said.

That senior administration official, who briefed reporters, gave this backstory:

Once Obama accepted McChrystal's resignation, he wasted no time finding his replacement. After McChrystal walked out of the White House following his 30 minute face-to-face meeting with the president, the president immediately huddled with a team of advisors to decide who would replace McChrystal.

That group included Vice President Joe Biden, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen, National Security Advisor Jim Jones and Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. For 45 minutes, they mulled over the president's options.

This makes a whole lotta sense. Take the man who is the CENTCOM Commander (ie McChrystal's boss) and demote him to theater commander. It is clearly evident that the WH has no clue. Gen Petraeus is a brilliant man and deserves to be at CENTOM–there are other 4 stars that can fill the theater billet. What a shame.

Malveaux and Lothian try to portray Obama as focused, wasting no time. That would be the first time. From the initial surge in Afghanistan to the oil spill, Mr. Obama has been unfocused to the point of criminal neglect of his duties. Mr. Obama should resign.

I am disappointed that Mr Obama accepted McChrystal's resignation. He should have been dismissed outright for cause. After all, it is the 2nd time he has committed this same court-martial eligible offense. He was given a second chance and he not only learned nothing but repeated the offense even more offensively than the first time.

The president also acknowledged it was "a sacrifice for Petraeus."
Let's hope he gets better support to go in and focus on actually completing the mission, allowing the US to draw down in Afghanistan based on success.

I agree with the McChrystal resignation.
It is important that our generals listen to our elected leaders...

BUT .....It is AMAZING that no one has respect for Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

The US elected two idiots that have no idea on how a military works.
    It is a joke.

    Worse president of all time.

Wow, if he could only move as quickly to organize the gulf cleanup, instead of getting in the way, we may be able to salvage some of the environment and jobs.

How about a court martial. McChrystal is getting off WAY to easy.

Obama is so clueless. His own generals disapprove along with the other 63% who give him a very low approval rating.

You can not explain away what was seen & heard by reporters: who allowed Rolling Stone in anyway??? Sorry – military code of conduct requires respect for the commander in chief: the "leaking" to put pressure on the President backfired this time.

BFD. So there's a new cop in charge of protecting the world's top opium dealer while soldiers and civilians continue to die and our Treasury is drained of money we don't have. Unlike Vietnam, not all deaths in the Afghanistan-Iraq-Afghanistan War have been in vain– in the beginning it made sense to go after Osama. But now it is conclusively hopeless, and our President lacks the good sense and courage to stop this historic failure ot learn from history. Betray us once, shame on us, betray us again, shame on you. You're OK for Chicago's South Side, but not ready for prime time.

When a man meets another man face to face you need to man up and not talk behind his back especially the President. McChyrstal is a great warrior but unfortunately is no longer fit to serve in the Middle East, his trustworthiness is questionable.

This would never happened if Hillary was the President. She would find a way to communicate with a general who is obvious brilliant but has behavioral problems. McChrystal seemed to understand his soldiers, and the soldiers were devoted to him. How exactly was him insubordinated to the Commander in Chief?

"Moved quickly" is a relative term. In the case of this administration, it applies to everything done in less than 6 weeks.

On second thought obama should spend more time playing golf. Say until someone can find something he can not screw up.
