Confirmation hearings for the 50-year-old academic and government lawyer begin Monday. Although she has never been a judge, Kagan is seeking a lifetime job on the nation's highest court.
To get there, she herself must first be judged - by 17 senators on the Judiciary Committee, who will decide whether she deserves a final floor vote.
The hearings promise to be an intense examination of her record advocating for two Democratic White Houses and her work as a teacher and administrator at top law schools.

This woman(?) is a poison pill for the United States....standing for all that's immoral, and wanting others to tolerate deviant behavior....toss her out on her ear...
Another leftist , we don't need another radical liberal sitting on the bench. No experience, bad views on freedom, poor choice.
She is another Harriet Myers! President Obama wants to relive the mistakes of President Bush over and over again. So he has the congress and the media behind him? She'll probably get confirmed. But It is still a poor choice. We have two political parties that put up stupid people for President. How can we be successful. This nomination is pathetic.
"Although she has never been a judge"
Just like Obama, Kagan will come with no experience.
Obama was a big fan of fillibusters when he was in the senate. so, if the republicans want to do fillibuster Kagen, they should.
"Although she has never been a judge...."
Which is pointless. Thirty eight of the one hundred and eleven Justices who have served, including Republicans like Earl Warren and William Renquist, also never were justices before their appointment. Of course, the only reason that this is an issue is because Kagan is a Democrat.
This woman is not qualified to be a Supreme Court Justice all she is a back room lawyer that's all. Everyone should know that Obama wants to stack the Supreme Court with liberals to further his agenda.
There more qualified judges that could fit the bill. He was probably told about Kagan by Bill Clinton. So as a good boy Obama listens to Clinton. If the senate confirms Kagan it will be one of the biggest mistakes they have made in this new century. Confirming Kagan is not good for the "Country". She should not be confired.
With someone so uniquely unqualified to serve on the Court, I would expect a difficult hearing. I wonder what Obama will give to the demcorats to buy her way in.
Let's hope everyone can question her without being insulting, like they were to Justice Sotomayer. Either way, Kagan seems as tough as Sotomayer and has the "judicial temperament" to deal with their crap.
Kagan is about as worthy of a Supreme Court nomination as Saul Alinsky ... marxist ideology which is totally unConstitutional, and no bench experience. Vote NO on Kagan.
And in November, vote American, vote Republican!
The highest judge in the land with no experience as a judge. About like a medical professor with no surgery experience performing a heart transplant on you. Way to go Obama and you liberal sheep.
She is the most unqualified person ever to have a chance at being a part of the Supreme Court because she does not believe in the first and second amendment.
Help wanted: Supreme Court Justice, no experience necessary.
Bush had a similar nominee and CNN slaughtered her for her lack of experience. Where is your indignation now? No big surprise here.
Just like half of the Supreme Court no way should this woman be allowed near the bench.
The only problem the Republican have with Elena Kagan is that she is INTELLIGENT. OMG
Let me guess. All the GOP senators will vote no.
