Boehner: Dems 'snuffing out' America I grew up in

(Updates with Democratic response)

(CNN) – House Minority Leader John Boehner is stepping up criticism of his Democratic colleagues, telling the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that "they're snuffing out the America that I grew up in."

Boehner's comments are the latest indication the Ohio Republican is aggressively setting his sights on the November elections as it appears increasingly possible his party could take control of the House.

"Right now, we've got more Americans engaged in their government than at any time in our history," he told the paper in comments published Tuesday. "There's a political rebellion brewing, and I don't think we've seen anything like it since 1776."

But Boehner, who most certainly would become speaker next year should the GOP take control of the chamber, stopped short of predicting Republicans will gain the 40 seats necessary to oust Democrats from control.

"The American people have written off the Democrats," he said. "They're willing to look at us again."

The top House Republican also previewed the GOP's top priorities should he take control of the speaker's gavel, including a repeal of the recently passed health care legislation.

"We are going to do everything we can to make sure that this law and this program never really takes effect," Boehner said. "One option would be to repeal the $534 billion in Medicare cuts, which pay for more than half of the law's provisions. "They're going to need money from the Congress to hire these 20,000-plus bureaucrats they need to hire to make this program work. They're not going to get one dime from us."

Boehner also suggested raising the social security retirement age to 70 for those who have at least 20 years left before retirement as a possible way to finance the ongoing wars

"We need to look at the American people and explain to them that we're broke," he said. "If you have substantial non-Social Security income while you're retired, why are we paying you at a time when we're broke? We just need to be honest with people."

In a statement released Tuesday, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Chris Van Hollen said Boehner's comments are "a wake-up call to the American people about the dangers of turning back the clock to a Republican Congress."

the reason for that Boehner, is because people like you are so bitter and can't stand that a black man is in the White House!! Even when no brain Bush was a President, Democrats didn't behave the way you morons Republicans are behaving now! get a grip dude!! time changes people and therefore our lives, don't expect to have an American like in 1776!!

The democrats have done terrible things to the America I grew up in.
I grew up in a time when all I had to be was white in order to get a job or into a school I wanted to go to. Everyone else knew their place. Sure our taxes were higher, but we had enough bombs to destroy the world a hundred times over and we could rest at night knowing that if anyone got in our way we could have them killed. It was a great time for companies that did not need to worry about cleaning up the environment or protecting endangered animals. BP could have spilled oil everywhere and we would never have dared speak against it. Joe McCarthy was out there telling us who to fear and who to hate.
People were healthier then too. Those poor folks lived in shacks that left them stronger – if they didn't die. Of course they did not need doctors because their kind never understood about medicine and things like that.
oh, how I long for those days that I just needed to be white to be in charge. Now they actually expect that I can read and write and think.

Save us all if everyone starts thinking we won't have anyone voting republican anymore. Education must be a communist conspiracy. Obama supports education – so, he must be a communist!

This begs the question... did you grow up?

Sure. Ignore this idiot and his idiotic statements. But don't ignore what his statement represents and the underlying issue that no one is seeing or addressing.

The America he grew up in (and the lifestyle to which Americans and apparently the poorer parts of the world aspire to) was built on the backs of those poorer nations and the hard work for nothing of the middle class.

Cheap foreign labor (referred to as sending jobs "offshore" in business speak), sweetheart business deals that rape and pillage foreign countries for the benefit of keeping the American dream alive (albeit on life support), and the subjugation of the middle class for the benefit of wealthy multinational corporations (see the BP Gulf crisis for evidence) all point to a walking dead man of an economy and in turn so-called "way of life". Not to mention pols raiding the coffers of hard-working Americans' retirement (both social security AND the wall street debacle).

But I guess nobody wants to admit that the American Dream as we all know it is officially a failed experiment that needs a huge reset.

This country is in the throes of a major identity crisis that may only be resolved in the most Orwellian of means.

    Can anyone say border patrol?

The Big Orange mouth breather is just one more voice shouting at the wind.

Obama is out to destroy the America we love and grew up in.
He is either a stupid Liberal Progressive, or a scheming Muslim. He is taking away our freedoms, destroying our currency, spending us into oblivion and grabbing for more and more power. He indeed may be the Muslim Manchurian Candidate. I hope the people will soon awaken and impeach him and get rid of his Czars and henchmen. GOD Bless America and save us from our unaware, unconcerned and naive citizens.

Mr Boenher and the rest of the Republicans better wake up soon. The "rebellion" he is talking baout is against the status quo politicians in office, not the Democrats.
More than one Republican incumbant has already lost thier bid to run for additonal time in DC. The trend is for change- that means Mr Boenher as well.

I certainly hope Boner is wrong, can the American people be so dumb to believe we would be better off putting the people who created the economic mess we are in back in power? We need more democrats not fewer, especially in the Senate so we can overide the filibuster stranglehold that the republicans are using to delay and obstruct our president.

Mr. Boehner, You must have been in a different part of the world. My father was a millworker, veteran, and volunteered endless hours with many different organizations to improve the lives of average and impoverished Americans. My father deplored every thing you stand for Mr. Boehner. He was an advocate for many unfortunate and REAL Americans, not just your elite, racist, hate filled constituents.

Response to a comment by earlier blogger: "Obozo and the DemocRATS …….." ??????

A silly choice of words speak volumes about the clown who starts by referring to the elected leader of the free world as “Obozo.” We know this person is unable to articulate legitimate arguments for or against any political issue. Also, this person has no respect for their fellow American’s and likely none for themselves as well … likely a paid political prostitute who steps on the first Amendment by spreading lies and misinformation. Clearly, this person truly hates America and the freedoms American has come to represent and would gladly see Americans hurt or even lose a war, if such pain could help their party obtain more money from donors or secure more political power.

And what America would that be you right wing SOS? The America where darkies knew their place, women were kept barefoot in the winter and pregnant in the summer; where men were worked to death for slave wages and children worked in coal mines?

I am so sick of the right wing in this country. YOU"VE destroyed America, not the Democrats. The Jack Boot right has been on the wrong side of every social question for the last 100 years. They claim to be fiscal conservatives yet have repeatedly destroyed the economy. They believe in a strong military but are too cowardly to serve their country in uniform.
The believe in strong moral values and personal responsibility but have not values and they take even less responsibility for their actions.

There are those who are afraid of a new civil war. It's here already, we just haven't gotten to the shooting part yet. This time when the North wins, we'll do with those traitors what we should have done the first time.

I couldn't stand George W. Bush, but he was infinitely better than what we have now. I'll be voting a straight Republican ticket in November and again in 2012, for the first time in my life!

Typical Republican spin, "...have written off Democrats". LOL!

After 8 years of a spectacular failure at the top, you amateurs think you have ANY credibility? Go back to the farm, Boehner, America doesn't need corporate lobbyists to tell them what they need.

whom does he disrespect more? his political opponents, whose views he so drastically misrepresents as to outright lie, or his followers, whose intelligence he insults by trying to use 1776 as an example while aggressively undermining the best interests of voters on both sides?

Just like Boehner's generation snuffed out the America his parents grew up in, and they did before, and so on.

This isn't cause for alarm. Society progresses, and that's just a fact of life.

People...Bob Dylan said "The times they are a-changin". Mr Boehner may not be absolutely correct in his analysis, and Mr Bush may not have been the best president ever. However, President Obama is the guy in charge. You can look back all you want but it is his adminisration and his policies that are in question. You can't continue to blame Bush. Remember when 9/11 happened the left blamed Bush after being in office only 8 months. Didn't Clinton's policies contribute to 9/11? Not by your rules. So Obama has to accept responsibility for what he s doing now and quit the blame game. Frankly, he is not doing so well.

Sorry there Boneheader, but back in the late 1800s this country became a nation with "GOVERNANCE OF the people, BY the corporations FOR the corporations".

Why just yesterday I saw a political commercial where the rethuglicant tea bagger said that anybody that worked was a slave.

Now, that's the unspoken GO(b)P party line if I've ever heard it...

I think the Minority leader is thinking of an idealize past that never existed. I would hope that he would have provided examples of what he is thinking was done in the past that can't be done now. Enough people believe that there needs to be some help out there for Americans to afford some level of health care. It would be nice if the Republicans had done something more than expanding Medicare (without paying for it) during their control of the Congress.

Of course the liberals will criticize this comment but it is true. For you liberals – how do you plan to PAY for all this FREE STUFF you want? This idea of criticizing "big business" and "the rich" is so childish. Do you think "the rich" just lay around naked in their money? Of course not!! They are thinking about how they can INVEST it to make MORE!! When they invest it (in existing business or new business) they will need to hire more people. How in the world is a business supposed to hire more help if this administration tells them their Health Care, Capital Gains, Profits are going to be taxed more? For those who believe this you have obviously never taken an Economics course or know how an economy works!!

The Republican Party is the Party of Know!!

This administration, and the Democrat Party, is killing this economy. Since Obama has taken office he has spent $1 trillion MORE than was brought in revenues (i.e. taxes) but yet unemployment is now at 10% and he lost 4 million jobs? Then Biden says last week "don't expect these jobs to ever come back". If that is the case THEN WHY DID WE SPEND $1 trillion!! Didn't you say that stimulus was going to create 4 million jobs? Now you say it won't create any? If this administration is not stopped our economy and country will be bankrupt and worthless in 2 more years.

Wow. This guy really has his hand on the pulse of the American people. According to Boehner, what the majority of the American people want is politicians who do nothing for them, and everything for big business.

    June 29, 2010 01:59 pm at 1:59 pm |

While I don't agree with the wording of Bohner's statements... he does have a point. Progress for the sake of progress is NOT always a good thing. The very reason the US has grown to such power and prosperity lies in the strength of our CONSTITUTION and our PEOPLE! I think anybody who views corporations and business with as much disdain as many of you democrats / progressives do is binding us to a path of failure. Those corporations are an important part of the balance of power in this country. The democrats want to increase government control and diminish corporate control. Government NEVER creates prosperity... business DOES. I truly believe we need a better balance... corps have gotten away with a lot in the last few decades, but the answer isn't to snuff them out... that will create a massive power vacuum which WILL be swallowed up by the government.. then personal liberties and personal prosperity will begin to disolve. BALANCE people... it's all about balance. Neither of you lunatics on the political fringes have the correct answer and you're too occupied by your ideology to understand the best path is MUCH closer to center.

He's right, you know. The America he grew up in is gone. It was an America where the dream was for whites only. where Blacks submissively sat in the back of the bus, where signs were not bi lingual. It was an America that had just been victorious in WW 2 and hadn't yet decided to rule the world. It was an America where all gays were still locked in the closet and all the Native Americans dutifully "bit the dust"
