Obama to announce funding to improve U.S. broadband

[cnn-photo-caption image= http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/07/02/art.racine.obama.jpg caption="President Obama will announce new funding for broadband projects on Friday."]Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama on Friday will announce new government investments in 66 projects to expand broadband connections in rural and poor areas across the country.

The $795 million in grants and loans funded by the 2009 economic stimulus act will create 5,000 jobs and generate $200 million in associated private investment, according to information provided by the White House.

"In total, tens of millions of Americans and over 685,000 businesses, 900 health care facilities and 2,400 schools in all fifty states stand to benefit from the awards," the White House said.

The money will bring broadband services to communities that "currently have little or no access, to help them better compete and do business in the global marketplace," the document said.

"With new or increased broadband access, communities can compete on a level playing field to attract new businesses, schools can create distance learning opportunities, medical professionals can provide cost-efficient remote diagnoses and care, and business owners can expand the market for their products beyond their neighborhoods to better compete in the global economy," the White House document said.

Obama will announce infrastructure grants and loans focusing on "middle mile connections" to communities lacking broadband access and "last mile awards" to connect homes, hospitals and schools to their community's broadband infrastructure, the document said.

In addition, the federal money also will fund public computing centers in libraries, community colleges and other public venues, according to the document.

Good deal Mr. President, help to bring these 'backwater' areas kicking and screaming into the 21st century. It will help accomplish several things, not the least of which will be to help disseminate news as it happens and by who it happens to. Versus having these folks continue to live in the fog of lack of information, or even worse GObP propagated misinformation.

A dumb electorate is a GObP electorate as evidenced by the Glen Beck following.

Continue to work hard for us sir, as you have been. RATIONAL and SANE voters appreciate your indefatigable hard-work on behalf of ALL Americans and WE STAND BY AND WITH YOU MR. PRESIDENT.

Great!!!!!! I'm so glad this is taking place. I have some relatives living in rural areas and they never know what's going on in the country less alone in the world, it's frustrating and their businesses are stuck in the past.

This move is great for the new generations living in rural areas as this will help them expand their hopes, dreams, wishes. This will open a great door for kids in rural areas. I just hope it happens in the weeks to come and not months, years from now.

More waste of stimulus funds. There is NO WAY, this proposal will create any amount of jobs or well being for people.

    Way to go Obama!

Broadband should be available to everybody for a decent price, it's as simple as that.

I'd like to see 100megabit fiber connections to the home.

What about the rising national debt? Democrats are sneaking in spending anyway they can, from education in the war funding bill to this as "economic stimulus". The stimulus bill was a failure.

What's even scarier is that Pelosi believes handing out unlimited unemployment benefits will create jobs.

He did not add that these "created jobs" will only be temporary. When the job is completed they will be laid off just like the census workers.
